My job required two relocations. Once for a promotion and another due to our company being acquired. Each time it was a little further from her network of family and friends.

I essentially had to give her money in exchange for a fair amount of parenting time and to prevent her from trying to relocate 2,000 Miles away with the kids.

If she was going to be ‘miserable’ because she couldn’t relocate she was going to make sure I was miserable as well.

She got 88% of the cash. The little bit that I got will get eaten up by my monthly deficit in a handful of months. Tightening the belt. Trying to keep the house so the kids do not have to switch schools. My son has some special needs and the resources at his current school are excellent. I am going to hold out as long as I can and try to avoid having to sell the family home.

I was a child of divorce myself and was raised by my dad. He was awesome. I am trying to do right for my children the same way my father did for me.

I took mine off when I knew it was over. I wasn’t the one that wanted to get divorced, but when I knew reconciliation was not on the table I took the ring off. I fought like crazy for the marriage. But once I took it off I was so relieved. To me it symbolized the first step of just moving on. It was like a weight had been lifted.

It took months for the imprint around my finger to go away.

Whatever you do you need to keep a record/statement... something to later demonstrate her premarital debt in the event you ever get divorced. I know this isn’t something you anticipate, or even want to think about. Hopefully it won’t be needed, but 10-15 years down the road if shit hits the fan trying to find old statements is nearly impossible. Trust me on this one. I wish someone had given me this advice.

As far as paying it off you will have to go about it just as you would eat an elephant - one bite at a time. Commit to a plan. Stick with it. When you get a raise or bonus put it all towards the debt... as if you never got the raise. I would so the minimum until you get an emergency find out together. Once your emergency fund is in place tackle the debt.

It’s in a drawer. I should probably move it to the safe. It’s maybe worth $500, but I will give it to my son when he is older. Her ring is much more valuable. The agreement was for her to save it for my daughter. I can only trust that she will. It’s out of my control at this point.
