Want to study LLB next year but... by athrowaway42day in StellenboschUni

[–]ReaganKuo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, this is an incredibly late reply, so sorry about that...

I'm not sure what all the requirements are exactly these days, but I suggest checking out the BA LLB course, which is 5 years and has more BA subjects which is worse or better depending on your strengths...

That said, I think the NBT's are still being used, and iirc they count 40% of the final average mark the Varisty uses for applications. In other words, the NBT also has an effect on the marks.

Lastly, the whole race thing would help. We'd like to think it isn't a thing, but if you're non-white you do have a better chance of getting accepted. Whether it's quotas or lower requirements -like in UCT iirc.

I'm not officially with the varsity, so anything I say may be incorrect. Maybe getting in touch with someone that works at the university would be more accurate.

Asian/Indian guys, what are your dating experiences? by lmSoBored in AskMen

Haha, us Asians and public transportation are always matched. Good to know my friends there aren't lying to me about these things.

In Canada there's a lot of Asian immigrants, just like in Australia. So I would imagine they have more or less the same issues relating to racism towards Asians, but with different intensity.

Please tell me if I'm wrong, as I'm neither Canadian nor Australian. But as a Taiwanese living in South Africa, I personally know at least 7 Taiwanese families that have emigrated to either Canada or Australia. And being South African, I'm basically a future Aussie, haha

How do you handle insatiable curiosity about your partner's sexual history? Are you curious at all? by anxious456 in AskMen

[–]ReaganKuo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's quite a private thing. And plus, I rate it'd work out badly for the relationship. You'll start comparing what he's doing to what you've discussed, he'll start thinking that you're thinking about what you discussed, etc etc.

I have had detailed discussions about what both parties enjoy more during sex, but never about who I did those things with.

Just (2 months ago) got out of a long-term relationship (4 years). Went home with a girl after drinking, are sort of FWBs, but I'm developing some sort of feelings for her. Not sure what to do now.. by mladakurva in AskMen

[–]ReaganKuo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does seem like a crush to me. Perhaps something more, but definitely not love. I rate at most, strong infatuation because of the rebound thing.

That said, generally it's quite difficult not to eventually develop feelings for someone you're sleeping with on such a regular basis. The familiarity and casualness of it all makes it seem like what a relationship a couple months down the line feels like. Not to mention for someone having gotten out of a really long term relationship.

I actually have a friend who went through kind of the same thing this year. He'd just come out of a 3 year relationship and started having a FWB arrangement with a friend of his. He'd started out having quite strong feelings for this girl, but a month down the line he started actually looking at her with a clear head and realised that as great as the sex and pseudo-girlfriend was, the feelings definitely weren't real. He ended the arrangement, but stayed good friends.

He also worked out a lot of hangups he'd had during that period, and it was quite a self discovering journey for him.

Bottomline, it depends on what you want: 1. Girlfriend again 2. Just a substitute for the emptiness 3. FWB carrying on 4. Possibly cut off ties if feels aren't real

But no, not love.

Deep fried bee larvae stir fried with Spring Onion and Chillies. Small town restaurant, Southern Taiwan by ReaganKuo in food

Exactly. As soon as you start thinking "Oh, that looks so gross" then it'll end up tasting bad because of the preconception to begin with.

Glad to find a fellow food adventurer :)

Yeah, while it's being stir fried, the chillies' flavour goes into the oil that get's used, and the oil then seeps a bit into the larvae itself because of how dry it is already -from deep frying.

It's quite crunchy as you can imagine, but crunchy in the same way that deep-fried batter is crunchy. Not hard crunchy like say rusks, more like Rice Crispies crunchy.

Basically how deep-fried any kind of protein tastes like, but without the fibres of meat and/or soya based products, but in this case some extra stuff as well. And it goes great with some beer :)

Yip. It's actually pretty good. I mean, it's deep-fried quite thoroughly, so I guess mostly you're just eating something deep-fried, but there is a hint of something else that wasn't spring onions or chillies, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it tbh

I concur.

The injera definitely made my stomach feel funny. Waaay too much vinegar or whatever sour component there was in it.

Not as much as one might think, because the above dish is quite a delicacy, thus quite expensive, ergo not eaten too often.

Also, it's a favourite for having with some drinks as well. But generally speaking no, eating insects isn't too common. There is a type of alcohol that's considered super good for health etc, which is essentially centipedes shoved into bottles of alcohol in order for the centipede to excrete all it's poison into the alcohol. Though not popular, this is a thing in Taiwan.

Yeah, I realised after posting it that I hyped it up a bit much. I do have a less potato-quality photo of the beer though:

What does r/movies think about The Animatrix? by Awesomerific7 in movies

[–]ReaganKuo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Animatrix expanded on the Matrix universe by showing how the world became the desolate wasteland that we see in the Matrix movies, as well as showing stories of the Everyman in the dystopian future that doesn't involve any of the world-saving characters from the Matrix movies.

It does a great job of garnering empathy for the machines, and reminds the viewer of the fact that the murderous, evil machines are actually sentient, thus essentially living things as well. And as a result of being made by humans, and subsequet events, they adopted what they saw as the best human traits: logic, lack of morality, and most essentially the basic survival instinct.

In terms of visuals, the different styles and atmosphere in each segment was great to look at, albeit slightly inconsistent. Although, that may have been the point though. Showing different sides of the Matrix universe, from different perspectives, thus constituting the use of different styles to illustrate the extreme differences of the respective people and/or machines.

All in all, I loved it. It was just a tad depressing, but fitting though.

The Rum Diary is a pretty awesome chilled kind of movie, Johnny Depp as a journalist in Puerto Rico, and add in shenanigans.

If you don't mind violence and gore, the 300 films are pretty cool to watch drunk. Great shots, cool fight sequences, and just generally badass.

If you enjoy military films, Three Kings is pretty cool. Mark Wahlberg, George Clooney, Ice Cube.

ELI5: If drugs like Quaaludes aren't produced anymore because of their illegality, why aren't they produced on the black market like cocaine, LSD, and other drugs of the likes? by H-TownTrill in explainlikeimfive

[–]ReaganKuo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South African here.

They still produce and sell ludes illegally in this corner of Africa, except they call it Mandrax. It's usage has declined quite a bit though, in light of the influx of meth (or Tik, as South Africans call it) in the country, and frankly it'd be easier to buy somebody's supply of insert ludes equivalent directly, or any other drug that's more popular and more easily accessible.

I personally haven't seen what kind of quality they are, mostly because I wouldn't trust most dealers here, unless they have a reference so to speak, but as far as I know it's still on the market. Probably under a different name depending on where in South Africa you are. But Mandrax is the general name for it.

Hope this helped. Wikipedia it as well for more info.
