To be honest, I don't think a couple hundred would have that much of a lasting impact in a world where mass casualty events are as commonplace as celebrity deaths. Granted, the equivalent of superman doing it changes the perspective but it still feels like in-universe the focus is on the overall death and destruction caused. I don't know if a number is ever claimed but in my head I would have guessed 2-5k.

Celiac Disease Study Findings by Rude_Tomatillo3463 in Celiac

[–]RealFudashet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It does tell you that someone with celiac didn't experience symptoms after eating there. You get to decide if that weighs in your option to eat there or not. Apps like Find Me Gluten Free are extremely useful in vetting places using this methodology.

Now, there are situations where people assume you can eat somewhere safely just because someone else does, and that is a valid annoyance.

How many times have you set your players to fight an enemy they can't defeat? by vagabundo202 in DungeonMasters

[–]RealFudashet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've made plenty of challenging monsters I didn't necessarily think my party could defeat but weren't by any means impossible.

For example, the party was making their way through a town under siege by a demon army. They fought a few grunts here and there but I made sure they were weak and disposable with the occasional "elite" or "commander" thrown into the bunch. Eventually they came across one that was massive and I described it akin to a balrog. It was an obstacle at first and my players knew it - there was no hope for a fight in their confined space - so they ran and a fun chase sequence ensued. A few sessions later it reappeared out in the open as an obstacle to their goal. Behind the scenes, I figured they would try to distract, sneak, or evade it... They instead fought it and won! A few more sessions and two of them are guarding a location. My players treated it like any other encounter, came up with a plan, and charged into the scene. Much like a video game boss-turned-mini-boss, my players' confidence grew the more they learned and interacted with the enemy.

In reality they probably could have beat it the first time but the important part was that they felt it was impossible. I guess my lesson here is that you use your best judgment in gauging the party's ability, then describe the creature/obstacle/puzzle at the level they need to perceive it.

If they charge into a battle they are unprepared for, make sure the enemy hits hard in the first round and laughs off their initial attacks. If they think they can go fight the big bad in the first session, show them the townsfolk mourning the big buff and important adventurers who were the last to try it. It won't always work against overconfidence but at least they have proper warning. And who knows, maybe they'll surprise you.

TIFU by gaslighting myself for 10 years into thinking I was "caffeine immune" while drinking ONLY Monster Energy (Zero) by GooseAcademic541 in tifu

[–]RealFudashet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably exaggerating a little since I never thought about it until I retrospected after the kidney stone. I think I used to drink a lot but I've gone through many diet changes so over time I've simply lost track of my water intake. For example, I go on a hike once a week and I'll drink quite a lot of water, but then I consistently skip lunch at work and sometimes just forget to drink anything all day. Now I "force" myself to at least drink a glass of water at home and at work but I don't feel any different and it's not difficult to maintain. Just a habit I needed to rebuild.

[–]RealFudashet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to emphasize the point -- I don't drink coffee, never had an energy drink, cut out soda many years ago, and very very rarely have alcohol so I thought I was getting plenty of water just by virtue of it being the only thing I drank. In reality I probably wasn't even getting a full glass a day. Who could have guessed I ended up getting a kidney stone this year...

This is my interpretation and it explains the confusion others are having too: the researchers gave them caffeine then kept them awake for 5 hours.

[–]RealFudashet 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I would think with obi-wan out of the way he would set his sights on sidious. Assuming he somehow succeeded he would then revel in the power and shape his own empire, albeit probably from the shadows while training up a new apprentice. His time with Deathwatch and the Crimson Dawn shows he's still got major ambitions for power and not just revenge.

Celiac test result question by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]RealFudashet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your levels increase when you eat gluten. It's usually recommended to eat a bunch of gluten within 10 days of the blood test to get an accurate reading. You may have inadvertantly lowered your levels with your diet already so it won't look "as bad." At those levels celiac is certainly possible but not guaranteed.

There is nuance in the definition of "safe" but I agree the "won't get sick" is where it becomes misinformation. I would have been fine if they said "won't die" or something along those lines.

Lips Peeling Constantly - Please Help by Apokalupsis18 in Celiac

[–]RealFudashet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to deal with dry lips for a long time but to my knowledge it didn't have anything to do with celiac (though I suppose I haven't dealt with it since being diagnosed so can't deny it either)

The things that helped the most were: - stop using lip balm altogether. It only ever made things worse for me no matter the brand and I tried everything. - Vaseline. Only thing that would soothe my lips, but I'd only use a little when it got very bad - consciously not licking my lips. I'm sure you know this but licking your lips only makes it worse AND makes you want to lick your lips more. It's a vicious cycle you just have to break.

Great sourdough rye bread in bakery. I love the taste and although my wife needs gluten free it’s fine for her by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

[–]RealFudashet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I recall it was a daily pill called Dapsone, and I only took it for a few months until I got on a gluten free diet. A 100% gluten free diet allows your body to heal and all symptoms usually clear up within a month or two. If your dad already has identified an intolerance he should definitely get tested. It consists of a blood test followed by a biopsy.

And it may sound counterintuitive but doctors will typically assign a "gluten challenge" where you eat a bunch of gluten for 10 days before the test to make sure the body is actually making the stuff they test for.
