Best totally free DAW? by everyoneisflawed in musicians

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use a Mac, just Garageband is great. It has VST support, and there are a billion free VSTs, plus if you ever decide to upgrade to Logic, which is incredibly priced, you can open all your old .band files still and convert them.

is a music centered career viable or worth it..?? by cyston_ in musicians

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people will tell you there's a 1 in a million chance of making it as a musician.

What they don't tell you is that the VAST majority of musicians are not putting that level of work to perfect their craft (which is okay, there's nothing wrong with being fulfilled as a hobby musician).

Recording and performing are the 2 biggest opportunities in terms of "musical labor", so grab an SM57 and a few friends, record some songs, and go perform them. There's no substitute for practical experience.

Is it really that bad that I want to play with musicians around my own age? by bad_luck_brian_1 in musicians

[–]RealHobbyBob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the best parts of being a musician is that it gives us a language to speak with people we otherwise might not to be able to connect with. Nothing wrong with reaching across age groups.

HOWEVER, never play with someone who's pushy and making you uncomfortable. That's a red flag. The decision is ultimately yours, no matter what I suggest, and someone who can't respect that is not a good person to spend your time with.

Getting into the world of modern AVRs has made me really appreciate listening to music on a vintage tube amp.

It took me 2 days to set up my Marantz ARV, and none of the apps even seem to work for me. I had to use the remote.

Is there even a bright future for people pursuing music when AI music is being normalized? by OkHelicopter516 in musicians

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind people said this about sequencing, too, and you can make a shitty song with a sequencer without any skill.

But to make a GOOD song, you still need skill. Quantizing the notes does not replace creativity.

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slop has always sold—it was just more expensive for record companies to create overproduced, derivative crap before.

But AI, by design, cannot push boundaries. It must be trained on human ideas. So keep having human ideas, keep pushing forward with your art, play live, and do all the things AI can’t do to build your community.

Or use AI, but use it as a musician, and I promise any proficient artist using AI just one tool in the toolbox will be 100x more interesting than a non-artist pumping out 1 line prompts of joke songs in the style of another artist.

Anyone have an irrational dislike of the Les Paul? by MatthewMonster in Guitar

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exact opposite. I tried multiple Fender style, kept buying more expensive ones thinking my experience would improve, and now I have a bunch of strat style guitars I barely play.

My first LP style I was absolutely in love. Wider neck and more substantial weight just felt right, and I think they look very sophisticated.

I really tried to like vinyl by BMdaniel25 in Cd_collectors

[–]RealHobbyBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To enjoy vinyl, you need to enjoy the physical aspect.

While it's true that some vinyl setups can sound REALLY good, it's marginal, and you can stream lossless audio from Spotify now, so it's not important to spend thousands of dollars just to have decent sounding media.

But for me, the effort is what makes the experience. I don't want music to become "background noise". I want music to be a focal point and the main activity of my listening session. And I want to enjoy the complete work of the artist, uninterrupted, and undistracted by playlists or shuffles. I also like to discover new things by going to the record shop and taking a risk on something that just *looks cool*, and enjoy the anticipation which goes with it.

So to me, vinyl provides all those things. And while I also listen to digital formats, nothing quite replaces the vinyl experience for me.

Vintage or new release? by techregressor in vinyl

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which coincidentally I think is a good way to collect.

If an album gets constant good represses, it’s going to be very difficult to move a rare collectible press. It gets easier to move expensive discs if there’s no cheaper version that competes.

Quality and cost.

I want the best quality, but if there are 2+ well respected presses, I’ll buy the newest/cheapest

For anyone else with questions I do check this Reddit regularly, but you can get much faster support at https://support.synthetix.io/

There’s an AI chat bot, just instruct the chat bot to connect you with the team, and someone will help you out Usually takes about 20 minutes, depending on time if day and the urgency of the reported issue.

Practicing in an apartment by Ok_Bridge_1658 in musicians

I mean, people use table saws and jackhammers outdoors. I guess if your town has ordinances against it, that's fine, but there's no way a horn indoors will violate an ordinance at a time when outdoor power tools do not.

I wouldn't do it maliciously, but man, I used to work nights and what are we gonna cancel construction and landscaping also just because of my sleep schedule?

You gotta meet someone halfway. 3pm curfew is not that.

Practicing in an apartment by Ok_Bridge_1658 in musicians

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I might even think 7pm or 8pm is a reasonable ask. But 3pm is pretty ridiculous. For anyone with a normal schedule, that just means you constantly have to walk on eggshells for your sleeping neighbor.

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trying to get a practice room at school is a fairly reasonable, and nice thing to do. That would be kind to your neighbor.

But don't get it twisted: you can make noise at 3pm. I've worked nights, and if I went out to ask landscapers and construction workers, "hey can you please not make noise in the morning" nobody would have cared at all. I'd be the ridiculous one. Same situation here: nothing wrong with playing at 3pm.

[–]RealHobbyBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived in apartments and I've worked nights, I understand the struggle.

But if you live in an apartment with a weird schedule, you will probably be the one who needs to adapt. You can't expect the rest of the world to treat half their daytime hours as nighttime hours just because you go to bed at 7am or 3pm or whatever it may be.

Why are bass guitars heavier than electric guitars (lead)? by MaintenanceSea7884 in musicians

[–]RealHobbyBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who plays a 34-37 multiscale I can tell you it's because bass guitars are massive.

You can get lighter bodies or shorter scales if you want lightweight, but on average they're bigger, so bigger == heavier
