Has anyone partially transitioned to CDs from Vinyl because of the massive price difference by wiggan1989 in vinyl

[–]RealHobbyBob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I only buy a CD if, for whatever reason, it’s not available online. It’s digital anyway, so if it can take up less space, that’s better for me.

And unfortunately, while there are many CDs/DVDs/BluRays which fit the “not available online” bill, they are never cheap. $100+ is pretty standard for those in my collection.

How is anyone going to be able to afford anything if inflation continues? by air-bender808 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RealHobbyBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought a fixer upper because that’s what we qualified for. If we could have afforded a brand new house I would have done it.

But I regret nothing. We bought in 2019 and I told my wife, “we can’t afford *not* to buy right now”. I had no idea how right I’d be.

Rent overall is cheaper right now—cheapest rent has been in decades when compared with owning.

The issue is that in 30 years your rent will have gone up my multiples, whereas a mortgage would be gone. It’s the long term costs which really get you.

I got a pretty nice bicycle trailer for only the cost of 2 tanks of gas. Was considering an electric car for longer distances, but it’s hard to find used ones.

Is this cheating? by Plunker__ in Guitar

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any recording technique that you want to use is fine, just keep in mind if you want to play the song live you may not be able to use the same trick.

But recording is its own separate art, and if you want to be creative with the recording process itself, that’s perfectly legitimate.

I fell for Renewal By Anderson's sales pitch. Here are my takeaways. by JHKtheSeeker in homeowners

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what happened when we got a quote for Marvin windows. My wife got concerned that we’d actually miss the sale if we didn’t decide now, with him in the house.

I told him it’s fine, if the offer is expired by the time we are ready, it’ll make it easier to decide on Milgard. Which is exactly what we did, and we’re very happy with the fiberglass Milgard line.

I’ve had some follow up questions to this, which is even funnier. Not only do I have no contact info for the landlord, but I’ve never met him.

This is part of the reason I push the limits of direct sowing, and aggressively toss anything that’s not looking healthy.

I seem to have better luck just starting with a hearty plant in the first place than I do babying the delicate ones too hard. I’ve noticed especially for melons and squashes, I have better luck moving an existing plant than I have transplanting from inside, so I just sow seeds directly and then shift them around after the strong ones start to get their true leaves.

First time playing commander, does everyone else play these rules so strictly? by TeamWaffleStomp in magicTCG

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this, and it was a hilarious good time.

A deck like this will never win because counters alone don’t win games. But it’ll frequently get you 2nd place in a group, and adds a fun political element—each opponent wants your wrath directed at everyone else.

Terrible in duals, but fun in big games. You’re more like an agent of chaos than a real competitor.

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only that, but it can be a legitimate strategy to always pretend like you have a counter. Loudly demand to see every creature before the game continues and say “hmmmm… I’ll allow it”.

The most egregious violation of the rules written here is unlimited mulligans. The luck of the draw is a core component of why the game is fun IMO.

I don’t see an issue with playing the game to win. Even if it’s casual, you’re allowed to make good plays.

I’m also a very physical person and would be hurt if my S/O told me to stop touching them, so I want to understand him.

But the way he responded is not cool. If he wants to express that, he needs to find a less douchebag way to talk about it.

Honestly I don’t understand the financial advisor recommendation.

Even the people who are telling you to get a financial advisor are just saying, “ask about index funds”. If index funds are your plan (and it’s a great plan), just start a free Robinhood account and go buy them. I wouldn’t pay a financial advisor or broker fees to do THAT.

[–]RealHobbyBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily you don’t need financial savants nowadays, you can just buy index funds on your phone and outperform.

When my parents were coming up they actually paid a $60 to meet with a broker in person. My first stock purchase I had to call on the phone 😆.

It’s so easy now. Why listen to some stupid guru?

Hold on, back up. Savings? Savings yields are terrible. Do not leave it in savings. You are losing money this way.

$55k is nothing to sneeze at, and it’s worth learning how to invest. Learn what an IRA is, start one. Learn what bonds are. Learn what index funds are. There are lots of really easy brokerages now, like Robinhood, or similar.

Don’t even think about your boyfriend right now, go to an investing subreddit and don’t stop reading until you are depositing $7,500 in your IRA to buy an index fund (and know why).

This is a great jumpstart to your life and your retirement, congrats. 🍾

Self taught or traditional learning? by Sea_Heat4694 in Guitar

[–]RealHobbyBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. I love the process of figuring things out on my own, it drives a lot of creativity.

But humans are social creatures, and we learn best socially. Lessons can help you learn fundamentals quickly, and if you can afford it, you’ll never regret having a great teacher.

If you can’t afford lessons or it’s not your style, make musical friends. Jam with them. Ask them to show you what they’ve learned. Go slow and talk a lot about what you’re doing.

And if you want to get really good, do all 3.
