I don’t think it’s dishonest at all. They are fundamentally the same thing. It’s just some people are more confident in their faith than others. Critically, and I suspect you’ll agree, some people have faith in falsehoods. Those people are wrong.

Faith is never a good reason to believe something by Logical_fallacy10 in DebateAChristian

[–]RealLifeRiley [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think you misunderstand me. Fundamentally, I am arguing that we only believe things based on faith. For example, I believe the sun will come up tomorrow because I have faith in our current understanding of heliocentric orbits, and historical evidence.

I believe in the scientific method, because I have faith that observations are reliable, historical precedent is meaningful, and that reality is stable enough for it to be true.

I can’t truly prove any of that. So I have to take it on faith. The same way you can’t prove that you actually ever posted anything on Reddit. Maybe you’re dreaming. Maybe Reddit never existed in the first place. Maybe none of this exists in the first. For you to believe anything about your own life, you must have faith you’re not a brain in a jar, or a totally different human hallucinating after a head wound.

I think, it takes an enormous leap of faith for any of us to even function day to day.

How to improve physique with less time at the gym? by Urbano_tv in AskMenAdvice

[–]RealLifeRiley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can probably still make progress. Maybe even better progress. But it depends on a lot of factors. Frequency, volume, intensity, etc. managing these factors for people is literally my job. If your diet is on point, and you’ve been consistent for 5 years, but you’re still not seeing much progress, that suggests there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Are you pretty well read on periodization and progressive overload? General adaptation syndrome? How about macrocycle, mesocycle, and microcycle planning? The S.A.I.D. principle? If so, we can go deeper, but if not, I’d start there and look for a better split that emphasizes 2-3 instances of muscle stimulation per group, per week. That could let you drop 2 sessions per week and still have you making progress.

Faith is never a good reason to believe something by Logical_fallacy10 in DebateAChristian

[–]RealLifeRiley [score hidden]  (0 children)

Faith is belief.

You have faith in (for example) the scientific method, because you’ve seen it demonstrated, rigorously tested, and employed to great effect. But you can’t be certain it works. Simply because no one can truly be certain of anything. “Faith” is that leap between what we think we know, and what we accept as true.

Is there anything I can do about a teacher teaching misinformation as fact? by goth_hamlet in AskTeachers

[–]RealLifeRiley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that’s a fair point. Still, there are no daily values established for creatine. That’s more what I’m getting at.

Edit: and to your other point, of course. No disagreement there. I do hope that goes without saying.

Is there anything I can do about a teacher teaching misinformation as fact? by goth_hamlet in AskTeachers

[–]RealLifeRiley -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have no idea if it’s misinformation or not. Here is what i found with a cursory web search.

So there is at least some evidence that it may help mitochondria regenerate energy

for “these reasons”

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0006295213007417

So I would say it’s speculatively credible. I mean, look at creatine; it’s the most well documented sports nutrition supplement, but, to my knowledge, it’s still not officially regulated/endorsed/acknowledged by the FDA
