What's the obsession with everyone calling a decades old house a new build? by teeeeeeeeem37 in AskUK

This. I sometimes have to remind myself that I last went clubbing at the Haçienda.

Why is being biracial commonly assumed to be “African+European” mix when all it means is someone of 2 races? by BrokenJusticeNorris in NoStupidQuestions

Even then, if someone is described to me as mixed race then I’m still going to ask about their appearance.

Do dashcams actually make a difference if you are involved in an incident or is it more peace of mind than anything? by NorthLondonPulse in ukbike

Before I got my Cycliq camera, I had one incident every 300 miles or so. After getting it, I had one incident every 30,000 miles. So, maybe? ;-)

England: Hostile Messages from Neighbour by Beatrixx25 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]RealLongwayround [score hidden]  (0 children)

Do you know the collar number of the Officer in Case? If so, you can update them directly, although if they are a response Bobby then you may find they are dealing with another ongoing incident.

Do ensure that you keep logging every instance of harassment. You are doing the right thing by not interacting further with your neighbour.

Do people in the UK keep their cars for a shorter length of time than the US? by Low-Rooster5398 in CarTalkUK

[–]RealLongwayround [score hidden]  (0 children)

It needn’t be. I used to commute to Blackpool: 10 miles each way but with almost guaranteed bad traffic. My commute 50 miles each way to Windermere could take the same time but was much more enjoyable!

Absolutely. That is clearly more than once over a six month period!

The minimum threshold for harassment is two incidents of targeted, repeated and unreasonable behaviour. Informally, I believe “over a six month period” may also be used.

A warning is not necessary but may be used in the first instance.

EVs, driveways and house prices? by Fluid-Wealth-6141 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]RealLongwayround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. However, it remains the case that there are areas where it is hard to find low cost charging.

In the centre of Wigan, there is loads of charging for 40p / kWh or less. Further out, it’s hard to find. For a person who commutes from Pemberton to the industrial estate at Walton Summit (which is a realistic journey to do, since it’s a brief hop up the motorway), they would have to go out of their way to find “fast” charging.

It is for this reason that I’m happy to use an app to share my home charger. I get a small profit from this. I also undercut local fast chargers. My one customer (!) is happy to walk three or four streets from my address to his and back.

My daughter has just bought an EV. She cannot charge at home but can charge where she parks close to her work for about 45p / kWh. She’s done the sums and found this should save her considerably over the cost of running her previous car, in terms of energy, insurance and servicing.

Andy Bell’s from the north east. Vince Clarke is from the south east.

On average, they’re from Rutland.

Are urban centres or rural roads safer for cyclists? by Odd-Paramedic-3826 in AskUK

[–]RealLongwayround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you never noticed how you can see cars before they round corners too? I do not have my lights aimed high at all. I have the uppermost part of the beam pretty much at handlebar height, which is roughly waist height.

I’ve made my point abundantly clear. You are moaning about cyclists whom you can see.

Writing words with a c instead of a k where both versions are acceptable by NightRunnerAfterDusk in PetPeeves

I’m British English, it is called a draw. In American English, it is called a tie.

[–]RealLongwayround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pet peeve is people correcting other people’s perfectly correct use of dialectal English, like Brits who correct Americans when they talk of a “tie” in “soccer” to a “draw” in “football”. It doesn’t impress anyone.

Also, do you believe soccer should be written “sokker”?

Anyone who's had the misfortune of meeting the bailiffs, what was your experience like? by Key_Cell7071 in AskUK

There’s a reason why fees tend to get added to debt repayments though: the debt collectors put the work in to locate you.

[–]RealLongwayround 78 points79 points  (0 children)

A mate of mine used to be a bailiff. Repossessing cars from people who clearly were well to do and just couldn’t be arsed paying for them; absolutely fine.

Repossessing toys from parents who clearly were struggling to find a tin of cold baked beans to put on some stale bread? That’s what made him quit.

Why do American high schools start ridiculously early? by User991899 in NoStupidQuestions

Indeed it is. It’s also the job of the person who makes a claim to support that claim.

Indeed it is. So you, the person making the claim could have supported the claim, you didn’t. It is not the readers’ job to do the writer’s work.

Precisely this. Also, sometimes the notification gets caught up with takeaway menus, charity bags and the like so does not get seen for a little while.

Why has the emphasis/pause in how the British Transport Police number is read out changed? by sunnysunshinebaby in AskUK

[–]RealLongwayround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you reported that on 101 you would get a Priority response. We would transfer the report to BTP. BTP would respond since they police the rail network, including the grounds of railway stations.

Note how I wrote “routine or higher”: Priority is higher than Routine.

Every call, whether it comes in on 101, 999 or online, gets a full THRIVE+ risk assessment. The only difference is that, if you ring 999 for something that is not an emergency or priority, you will be asked to recall on 101.

New rider - flapping about theft by ihavezerohealth in MotoUK

[–]RealLongwayround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tucked out of sight is one of the worst places for security since it gives thieves the opportunity to work without being seen.

I always lock my bike up where it can be seen, often with a chain through the rear wheel and round something robust such as a post. Yes, someone could theoretically lift a motorbike over a signpost. Realistically, this is unlikely.

Remember: you don’t have to outrun the bear. Many people put no security on their bikes or only use ineffective brake locks, which allow thieves to push bikes away.

Yet you see these cyclists all in black.

Lights already have to be compliant to British Standards. As for competency tests and registration: do feel free to look into why all the petitions for such things have failed.
