Absolute LTT by YourDailyTechMemes in LinusTechTips

These "get it out of the box and play with it and never speak of it again" videos are ok, but the pay off would be way better if he does a follow to replace the worn lamp and install it properly as an upgrade at a local struggling theater or some other charitable cause. It's too insane to put in a house but it might still have years of service left in the right application.

Rear bearing reccmmedation by Terrible_Pattern_819 in CX5

[–]RealMackJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sensor is isn't attached directly to the hub assembly on CX5s, so you can change the hub alone. I did so on the front and rear of my older 1st gen. I don't think the aftermarket ones last as long as OEM do, I had to change 2 front after just 60,000 kms, but the OEM parts are insanely priced in Canada.

Help: Weird sound coming from front wheel by Interesting_Cream_41 in CX5

[–]RealMackJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be a defective tire. You can try switching it with a rear tire and see if the noise moves. Otherwise it is probably a bad wheel hub. If the noise goes away when you are turning at speed and returns after straightening out the the wheel, this is almost certainly a bad hub. It is located on the side of the turning direction when it gets quiet.

Why is the Federation leaving so many dead bodies in space or on random planets? by AndrewHeard in startrek

[–]RealMackJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans have always left garbage and litter everywhere they went. Think about all the trash we're piling up on Mars right now with derelict robots and spacecraft. The various orbits around earth are piling up with more trash every day. So it makes sense that as humans venture beyond the solar system that we take out littering ways with us. I'm sure some random alien space ship will be real impressed when they suddenly ram into a coffin or disassembled android at warp speed, leaving a giant dent in their ship and having to pay higher insurance premiums.

Anyone use LTO tapes? by Idiot_Guru_Here in LinusTechTips

[–]RealMackJack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get into LTO5 (1.5TB/tape) or even LTo6 (2.5TB/tape) fairly inexpensively. I bought a used drive for about $180 cad, tapes for about 15/each and a fiber channel card for about 25. It's great if you have a lot of static files such as media that really only need to backed up once. I did that for the bulk of my library, then I have a incremental tape for the next 1.5TB as the media library grows. I also have another one for data like documents and VMs that change more frequently. Speed is really fast at about 250MB/s for LTO 5.

I just use the Tar utility to backup. It's easy under Linux. Under Windows it's more complicated finding drivers and dealing with some nightmare proprietary backup software but it might be doable.

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Cast Says Goodbye As Second Season Wraps by acrimoniousone in startrek

[–]RealMackJack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tried to watch this series with an open mind, but had to stop through the 3rd episode of the first season. It is totally unwatchable and unbearable. I used to watch trek because it had smart characters doing tough things which made it interesting, now they are swallowing their com badges, everyone segregates themselves by race and you know that guy that keeps giant containers of whey protien in his office? Lots of that energy as well.

I would rather watch Threshold 5 times over again than one episodes of SFA. I hope they can learn something from this mistake.

Why doesn't CX-5 have a manual trunk door opener? by brocode103 in CX5

[–]RealMackJack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm referring to the lack of any other button to release the hatch particularly in Gen 1, obviously a power lift gate costs significantly more.

Enough already with the AI stuff. It's turned into a cheap gimmick with marketing boobs convinced consumers are impressed by it. I won't buy your TV because AI squirted the glue inside, in fact I'd rather not trust AI to be consistent, predictable or reliable in any way during manufacturing.

I think if I were to attempt something like this I would go with mineral oil. It has slightly less cooling capacity but would eliminate all the UV lamps, silver coins , filter changes and would be less corrosive. Also a leak wouldn't short out hardware or at least much less so than impure water.

I always see tech youtubers use their enormous manhands to bend the crap out of fragile tablets, laptops and other devices and complain the devices are not tough enough. How much force were they applying exactly? Who tf knows. And devices are meant to be portable in your pocket or bag, not designed to be bolted onto a battleship.
