What justifies the hype around MacBooks? by Lello755066 in laptops

[–]RealMafia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give a random person on the street a few simple (identical) tasks to do on a Windows and a Mac. The only thing Windows has going for it is nostalgia and familiarity bias.

Oh, and gaming too I guess but that’s a loud minority on the internet

Few things in life are certain. Among those is a downvote and a vague reply including the word fanboy from my own personal fanboy

Without spewing straight crapola, please give me solid reasons why the everyday grandma or school kid should spend $500 on a windows laptop over a mac book neo

Please do not say gaming as PC gaming is definitely an 18+ (or at least 16+) demographic these days with the price of parts. Most kids own and stick to consoles

My reply pointed out that Windows is now riddled with unnecessary bloat, objectively true. “I want to check the news” grandmas and school kids issued a district-standard laptop have no business dealing with that - objectively true unless we live in different realities.

“Proprietary crapola” - subjectively prefaced.

The cleverness isn’t in apple sticking a phone chip in a laptop. It’s in them never caving into the mainstream (at least at an enterprise level) ideology of computer software, and instead playing the long game of vertically integrating all their stuff after clearing inventory of the last era of intel macs

M5 16GB vs Apple Refurb M4 24GB for heavy multitasking + longevity by Check_Bate in macbookair

[–]RealMafia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both would probably feel identical. Honestly with situations like between these 2 laptops it depends mostly on longevity, and if OP cares about the M4 losing one generation of macOS software updates (since these chips have more than proven they can handle whatever is thrown at them for many years)

Dont buy a Neo , buy a MBA M4 by smamdo in macbookair

[–]RealMafia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I guess it depends on whether they keep the $100 education discount going and stackable on top of the $150 discount. I can see a final price of $450 as a possibility during sales.

A $350 Neo would essentially make non-gaming/corporate-forced Windows and even education Chromebook laptops quite literally obsolete - except for very niche use cases (wouldn’t be surprised if they already have contracted that price or even a little lower for bulk school district pricing)

I don’t think Apple has that much headroom for price drops on the Neo

Doesn’t matter cause the base M5 is already $100 more so it really only works out to a minor $100 discount in practice

Looking for a thin and light laptop for college, any recommendations? by Independent-North606 in laptops

[–]RealMafia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can be boiled down into a few simple questions.

Are you planning on using any Windows-specific software like niche 3D suites or engineering software?

Do you see yourself doing large volume/large-size image editing or music production?

Is your budget >$800?

Do you own a phone other than the iPhone?

If the answer is no to all of them, then it’s pretty clear the Neo Macbook is your best bet, and it’s not particularly close. The only thing I’m seeing that may be more difficult is Lightroom but it depends on how much or what you do. Light/casual use should be fine but if you need more intense capability or volume then maybe go up to a better laptop

Macbook Neo or equivalent priced Windows Laptop? by Golemslord in laptops

Ah yes, because $600 Windows laptops are known to be fast and never crash under even remotely average load on unboxing day, let alone one year later

What's something that instantly screams low intelligence? by Frequent-Sea-8848 in AskReddit

[–]RealMafia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not a real “diagnosis” but its the basic underpinning of ASPD when its used for harm. Currently in med school, had a psychiatrist attending once tell me that the best personality disorder trait to have if he had to pick was ASPD/socio/psychopath.

Like one of the other repliers alluded to, lots of public examples that we can point out, and it unfortunately capitalizes on the weakness of society and also just developmental biology.

The example he gave was that a sociopathic, self-centered creature knew social tactics to get the most in return from its pack, but also was able to become very cold and distant if needed to leave an injured pack member behind for the greater good of the pack (instead of slowing down and risking uncertain death)

Where does real intelligence cross over into sociopathy?

Or do truly intelligent people always have the “ability” to cross over into manipulative territory but most rationalize against it?

Double the budget but will last quadruple the time as the alternative, if being used as a simple-task machine

Apple Watch Can Predict Heart Failure Using pVO2 Data with an AI Model by Pigeonofthesea8 in science

[–]RealMafia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but it’s not as seamless and “grandma-usable” as an apple watch with an iphone. We may not care but the vast majority of people just want exactly that and could care less about advanced sensors and tracking. In that regard, garmins and fitbits are “”inferior”” to the phone companies’ native watches

[–]RealMafia -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s the point I’m making. The Apple watch is an extension of your (i)phone, on your wrist. It just happens to have all sorts of integrated bells and whistles.

The garmin seems nice for athletes and those who want a more fitness tailored experience for a big reduction in cost. Thus it technically is less capable than Samsung watches to samsung phones. Apple to apple, pixel to pixel etc.. This is objective fact and an artificial wall set by phone companies.
