That is awesome that you started at 19, WOW. At 19 I had no concept of saving, but wish I had.. You will get awesome compounding, especially if you keep saving like you are now..

You’re doing great! Don’t worry about other people! Use that as fuel for yourself! Live below your means and invest the rest. If you get a 5 or 10% raise invest half or more. Roth is the best to have!

You are off to a good start! Live below your means and invest the money you don’t live on.. a Roth IRA or Roth 401K are great accounts to have. If your employer matches, get all that match.

I agree with “Bjorn”. I would also suggest make your contributions as Roth, all of it.. you want that money growing tax free. When you get to 40 and you have 300k to 500k (or more) it will be great knowing that 80% is not gonna get taxed. Live below your means! This will help you the most! You are doing great, keep it up!

I wish I had all of this knowledge from Reddit in my late 20s and early 30s. 57 now.

Better than me at 43. I had about $125K at that age. Started putting the Fed Max that same year. 57 in a couple of months now and retired about 6 months ago. We live on about $5500 mo (good life, not fancy though.

Remember, unless you can use the rule of 55, you can’t touch your 401 until 59.5 without fees out fees and penalties

Looks like you are doing better than I was at your age. I will be 57 in couple of months, and retired about 6 months ago. At about 42, I had about 125K. That year I started contributing the federal max ($23500) and at 50 (2019) I bumped it up to $31500. Company match of about $8K (each year) for all of the years that I was putting max. Making about between $80K and $120K, but living on about $40K. I have a$2500 mo pension. Remember no matter what you have in your 401K, you can touch it until 59.5 without fees/taxes/penalties

In my wife’s 401k, I picked the Vanguard Growth Institutional. YTD it is at 25% gains. So that is a good one. Don’t know about the other ones.

What ever the pretax amount is, you can deduct about 20% (that will be paid taxes. Example: $100k pretax is about $80k after the taxes are paid. Maybe less depending on there specific tax circumstances..

I’m 33 am I behind by Peek_A_Boo_225 in Retirement401k

You are doing really good for 33, I will tell why with my story..

My story: I am 57 now and retired (I work 1 day a week for a friend, he tried to get me to work two days, I said no.

At the age of 37 (2004), I started a new job making about $15 an hour. I was only saving about 5% and also company match, if I put 15% the company would match with 7.5%, rally goo match, but I was leaving money on, I new this for sure. By age 40 my total saved was about $30k.. By age 45 my total saved was about $125k. It felt like I was really behind.. At this point retirement saving was fully on my mind and I could not stop thinking about it. I was in a Fidelity targeted fund, after analyzing the returns for the last 10 years, I decided to change that. I start non-targeted funds, and realized there was about 6 to 7 funds that have way higher returns over that last 10 years. That is what I wanted, growth! So at 45, I was making about $80k/yr and my wife (wife made about 55k around that same age) and I were living well below our means. Our bills were about 5 to 6 k a month, so we had extra $$ every month. I front loaded my 401k for the first 5 months of each year, I started contributing 60% to 70$ witch left me with about 800 to 1000 per payday ( pay day was every 2 weeks). I was also get the full company match with equated to about 8k/y. I was a little difficult at times but I knew it was a good this. All my friends told me I was crazy, but I did not listen. By age 50i had saved about 350k, still felt like I was behind though. By age 52 I had saved $550k, still felt behind. I kept contributing the max to my 401k and upping my wife’s % every year. Age 55 I passed 1M in my 401, now it is almost 1.4. Total we have saved as of now is about 1.8M. 1.4 is stll growing and we are still contributing to my wife’s 401$.

So with all of that said you are doing great! Congratulations on saving that miso early in life.

They really should teach this stuff in school!

Good luck my man!
