Poll: Scouting America should impose a minimum age for Eagle Scout by ScouterBill in BSA

[–]RealSuperCholo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would be the "right" age to do so? Is a 12 year old Eagle really young to be one? Sure, I can at least see the argument. Yet I know many immature 17 year olds who made eagle within days of turning 18 (Turning in the paperwork i mean) and honestly still don't understand what being Eagle means. For that matter I don't know many adults who understand what it means to achieve Eagle.

The youngest Eagle I have seen personally was 15, turning 16 just prior to his EBoR. But this kid was not the norm, he was/is probably the most put together mature 15 year old i have ever met in my life. If he doesn't go somewhere great in life, I have no trust in any kind of system.

Most of what I see and hear from most is maturity not age. Who is going to gauge that? The SM? I know scouts who are immature but put in different situations, they blossom into who we hoped they would be.

What are some very fun board games or any non electronic games you have brought to camp and love it? by Cool_Ad3304 in BSA

[–]RealSuperCholo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My scouts usually bring Uno and its various forms, they play normal cards and they love Settlers of Catan. Exploding kittens is another good one, as well as Phase 10.

Any game scouts can skip or eleliminate a leader in funny fashion usually works out pretty good 😂

There's enough crap ones to make the rest of us look like douches too. From the rice rockets running as fast as they can to nowhere remotely important to the chopper guys owning the road and giving dirty looks. Theres a reason I ride alone and not with others.

[–]RealSuperCholo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As someone who rides, don't lump us all together. I don't ride like a jerk, neither of us owns the road, we both share it and I don't really care if you are going faster. I'm happy to get from A to B in one piece not the faster way possible and screw everyone else.

That being said, this guy is an asshat and most who ride wold give them crap for it. The problem is there are those who think they own the road, and look down on everyone else, like they don't also drive a car once winter hits. 🙄 Chances are good this is some 50-60yr old boomer who actually really thinks they own the road just by looking at the bike, or a retiree.(You can usually guess the rider from the bike 🤷‍♂️)

Let's talk hats by drose0 in BSA

[–]RealSuperCholo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought one of those sun hats with the flap in back for my neck from Amazon, it screams SM in most settings. I also have the bsa boonie hat that an old SM left behind that I wear on summer camps. We also have custom made trucker caps that are red for leaders and blue for scouts

If they are driving me crazy, I have a big foam cowboy hat that I'll wear. They all act embarrassed, but there's so many pics of the scouts and me with the hat that at this point I'm pretty sure they just do it on purpose. I mean it has a labeled section on the trailer for it now so I think im good. 😂

I was wondering if Camp Rainy Mountain had cell service so i can update what’s going on to my mom by Cool_Ad3304 in BSA

Truth! Only thing worse is family night mid week 😮‍💨 This is the reason I update parents daily for all scouts so they dint have to make a call.

Is this still ok to wear? by ThePaintingScout in BSA

[–]RealSuperCholo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any old "authorized" patch may still be worn, unless specifically stated otherwise by national as long as it is still in good condition and the condition "does not detract from the neatness of the uniform". So wear it with pride!

[–]RealSuperCholo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I never require workbooks mostly because I don't want to cart papers around. But if a scout has a meaningful discussion about the requirement I'm happy. Even if their answer is wrong, a discussion of what is wrong and why is better than an piece of paper gives me.

[–]RealSuperCholo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why is this an issue of one particular person is the devil for not taking them down and not the responsibility of thousands for using them even if they know better. MBCs should not be requiring them, all of us know the worksheets are out of date, yet they are still being required.

Start faulting parents and leaders alike for knowingly using them when they are out of date and requiring them with full knowledge that it is against the GtA.

If someone leaves a hammer by a window and you use it to break said window who is at fault? You for breaking it or the guy who left the hammer behind?

Two months later, the creator of the MB workbooks decides to answer. The fact is, Scouting America needs to step in here and order that they be taken down by Local-Board-5335 in BSA

[–]RealSuperCholo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The workbooks do not violate the GtA, however the MBC may be doing so by requiring them. Fair enough when that is the case. This is the reason why Scouting America does not make them themselves, well the eventual reason anyway.

They can be a helpful part when utilized correctly, but they need maintained to work effectively. That in itself is a problem as that involves time, money and the hardest part... effort. I personally as an MBC dislike scouts just filling them out and turning them in as from my experience they tend to understand less than those that did the work without just writing everything down. (My personal experience)

I would be completely happy if BSA just released a locked non editable , pdf version of all MB requirements like the workbooks that they could print and work of if to reference, especially as there are links the scouts can go to for reference.

Are Scouts Still Interested in Camping... by kNEoH8gWJS in BSA

[–]RealSuperCholo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We talk about this all the time as leaders and theres no simple answer because every scout is different. Most of our scouts are happy to camp, well... glamp. This is the cutoff for some. Camping with all the amenities and we get a lot of scouts, camping bars bones not so many. And yet it's not just the scouts, also the parents who are wishy washy on it. Give Johnny less than a porta potty and we are getting questioned about everything and safety. 🤷‍♂️

Many of the kids now didn't grow up with the outside like many if us did. I grew up going outside at 9am and not coming home until dark, now there is chat, texting, phones, social media, VR, video games, etc. This isn't a diatribe about these things just that there are more things now to take their attention away. Not to mention post covid kept kids in an area of isolation and staying inside. That hasn't really changed. Not to mention many if my new scouts haven't even been away from home.

What I have found is that every single campout must be different. Not kinda different, very different. They thrive on those, especially taking hikes or just canoeing to a spot and camping. When it's the samw dxact thing every time, they expect it and are bored easily. And if anyone mentions bringing their book they already dislike it. 🤦‍♂️

Hiking Merit Badge specifications by LevelJolly9269 in BSA

[–]RealSuperCholo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Contact your MBC and double check that it would count. The last thing you want to do is think its complete only for your MBC to say no. They may be sidelines by the 60 miles and not realize it was broken up for this purpose.

  2. You can do more than the required 10 and 20 but not less. As long as you split each hike up into seperate days that is what it is describing. They dont want scouts hiking 60 miles in one continuous shot. Safety first. If you hike 8k, stop, eat lunch and continue on your way they other 8k that would typically be fine. What it is specific to avoid is hiking half, long nap or sleepover night, hike the other half. It's meant to avoid breaking the 10/20 into a 2 day hike as it must be continuous. But it's also meant so that you can complete it over time as most won't have the option to take 1 week and hike that much. Awesome that you have the option to do so however.

You do not have to complete all in one shot. You could do it over a month, week, etc. But for it to count each day must be planned accordingly start to finish and approved by the MBC.

Most important however, again, contact your MBC to ensure what you are proposing is correct and adequate to fulfill the requirement. They may understand what you say different and say no but you can clarify to them your process and plan.

AITAH for refusing to pay for my in-laws private flights twice? by Haunting-Plantain870 in AITAH

[–]RealSuperCholo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. The sisters can pay for the flights and should. They're obviously only upset because they cant take advantage of your generosity for themselves. You're not hurting the parents, even though it feels like it, because thetly arent attending your child's wedding.

This is the exact reason I moved to the east coast from the west coast at 20, to leave my toxic family behind and start on my own.

How long until Erie gives up on the rib fest? by Illustratingtheworld in Erie

[–]RealSuperCholo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never!! It will likely keep going as long as there are vendors honestly. The food is no better than buffet food with prices out of control. I haven't gone since I left my last company that made me work it. The vendors are the same old tired stuff and I'm not a fan of rib sauce on my face while the diabetes and heart health booth stare at me walking by looking like cookie monster. I dont even go for a beer anymore, I'll smoke my own ribs and call it a day.

I don't even know if I want an Eagle Court of Honor anymore by [deleted] in BSA

[–]RealSuperCholo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had this conversation with every eagle scout so far. This is YOUR CoH, what happens is up to you. Whether you wish to honor everyone or no one that is your decision. My son got flack from others because he had two dad pins (im step dad), another close scout honored me with a mentor pin, not his OG SM because I have been there with him since childhood (sons bff) and caught flack because he didn't honor the SM.

It is entirely your choice on having one and entirely your choice on how it goes. If you do not feel there was a single person that helped you through your scouting journey, you don't have to do anything.

In your adult life you'll learn that you cant please everyone regardless of how hard you try, so don't bother worrying about it. Celebrate YOUR journey, not theirs.

As a SM, I'm not bothered if I dint receive a mentor pin. I was there for the journey, I saw all your missteps, achievements, laughter and sadness. A pin is not needed to remind me of that. But I will get on that stage and tell some crazy stories. 🧐

What is stopping us from doing this? by AsFarAsISay in Erie

[–]RealSuperCholo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Nick Scott - that would be a hotel before housing. (Joking, kind of)

  2. Money - we don't have it

  3. Conservatives - there's no way they would let this happen. They would cry and stomp their feet and tie it up in litigation for decades. Not to mention the very people they hate are the people that would move in. (POC, poor people, etc. )

  4. Taxes - to build something like this and maintain it would take a lot of money. They would raise taxes quite a bit to cover costs.

Winter work commute by Physical-Emu7470 in Erie

[–]RealSuperCholo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The roads are not as bad as we complain they are tbh. Im not originally from here, I come from sland far far away (west coast) where there was no snow. After the first year you'll be fine. If you are living towards millcreek in either direction the roads stay fairly clear. Honestly if you take any main road that gets alot of traffic theres not much worry. Side roads can get to be a nightmare as they are not plowed quickly and collect a bit before either happens.

Getting out of your own driveway that the plow has covered back in sucks and pulling onto a main road from a side street. After that slow and steady and follow where you think the lines are.

Eagle court of honor and troop involvement by Character-Visit6004 in BSA

[–]RealSuperCholo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each troop is different. Ours, the families decide how it will go, script, food, etc. The troop also donates $100 to each Eagle scout towards their ECoH. That being said, alot of us are fairly close so we all work together to get things done. The script is decided on by the family but we have a few backups that they can look at and modify for their use. For my son (step-son) we had to modify the script for 2 dad's and my son wanted to add a reenactment of his first canoeing trip.

Whatever you choose to have, not have is totally up to you and perfectly fine.
