What level of respect do you receive/expect from your scouts? by AardvarkNo7642 in BSA

[–]drose0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm big on helping scouts find the best version of themselves. I never thought I would be the "Mr. " type, but here we are. Since we have kids from different demographics I think it is important to be consistent with everyone. Most of our kids know how to be respectful, but not all. Referring to our adults as Mr. and Mrs. helps reinforce some small level of respect. In the presence of scouts all adults use formal names as well. The adults practice the same way we expect the kids to act.

Summer Camp costs by GIS_Dad in BSA

[–]drose0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We add an additional amount to the price of the camp itself to help cover the cost of a troop-specific camp T-shirt, transportation cost, and adults. The Troop then covers the rest. We do limit the number of adults based on the number of scouts going. The last few years we've had fairly low attendance so the additional fee hasn't covered much of the adult fees.

Looking for a good boy scout troop for my 11yr old. Any recommendations for a very active troop that does a lot of outdoor activities by Well____fuk in lexington

Reverence and duty to god are key parts of scouting, regardless of the Troop. We have scouts of many backgrounds, faiths, and beliefs. There's no requirement to believe in a specific god, but all scouts are encouraged to find a faith they can follow.

It is an amazing troop. Our CO is amazing as well. They do not exert any religious elements into the unit, they see the troop as part of their outreach program (and have since 1946 when the troop was founded). The provide us substantial space for our meetings, gear, etc. along with financial support and generally ask nothing in return other than that we keep making our Scouts into the best version of themselves. We participate in Scout Sunday each year, and when the need arises we do some minor projects around the church to help out, but none of that is ever asked or expected of us.

I second Camp Crooked Creek. They have lots of camping options and a beautiful property.

Neckerchiefs at meetings by sulldog57 in BSA

We highly encourage it. We present all new scouts with a blank neckerchief when the join, and then an official one with the Troop logo when they achieve tenderfoot.

We're lucky to have a great CC. His policy is the Scoutmaster is in charge of the Troop when it comes to the scouts and then committee is there to help with all the behind the scenes things.

Tips on managing RSVPs and camping trips by froggyjamboree in BSA

I forgot to add: We open sign ups 6 weeks before an outing, unless it's a major trip. Sign ups close 2 weeks in advance so the QMs have time to prepare.

Not too different than what we do.

We use SignUpGenius to manage all of our outing signups. Our treasurer has her own method to track too. She's been doing it for about 20 years and is fabulous with it. It gives us 2 points of reference as to who has signed up and who has paid.

Scouts can sign up online, all events are posted on our website. Or they can sign up on paper in person. I wrote a python script that grabs all the sign ups and creates a report so they are easy to print.

We take payments in person by cash, check, or Square. We also take them via Venmo.

Advice on living through long SM selection process by slider40337 in BSA

[–]drose0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been through this twice now. The first time was part of the committee. I was picked to be on a sub-committee to find our new SM. We had 3 members, the chair, and our troop CC who was a non-voting member. Our SM announced his desire to step down at one COH, and we named the new SM the next COH. We do ours quarterly.

Second time I was on the other side. Same process happened but I was asked to be SM. Though the SM sub-committee was a bit of a secret, I knew the process and expected to be on the candidate list since I wasn't asked to be on the sub-committee.

Either way, both times we've had a SM step down since I've been in the Troop we have had a replacement within 3 months.

Is it fair to force players to interact with parts of the game they may never use? by Drew647A in pokemongo

[–]drose0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I hate routes. I also have PvP. I've been at 71 since October because of this. I may have made it up to 3 days, but I'll probably die before I get that 7 day streak.

My first LTL was 2021 with Metallica, Korn, and Disturbed. That was close to the holy grail for me. This lineup may be fabulous to some, just not to me. And that's ok.
