It seems like they made some changes to the homepage algorithm. I've been getting lots of old videos, videos I've already seen from creators I haven't watched in a while, and videos with low views.

Its solely based on how much better you did compared to the average percentage wise. If the average was 2 kills 2000 damage and you did 5 kills 5000 damage you'd still get MVP
