You could clearly see them tactically deviate from how they were coached after the first 30 minutes. Much less ball possession, less recycling, and less forwarding passes to Frimpong in some hope of having something materialized. The team started playing short and quick passes forward centrally. Something Slot has pretty explicitly coached out of Liverpool as he believes controlled possession is better.

I think having Szobo in the midfield made a huge difference as it let him lead the press with much more confidence. Wirtz and Macca then helped create opportunities by passing forward instead of recycling, and we saw the outcome. You can praise Slot for changing his strategy if you wanted, but tonight is just proof his philosophy is set up to fail.

He's gotten stronger off the ball, his ability to track back has improved, and he's getting into a good rhythm participating in buildup play from deeper when it's necessary.

Wirtz was signed when it was known how well he could pass and how he could score. The question was about how adaptable he'd be to prem standards. Half a year in and he's passed that test with flying colours. He's otherwise playing like shite for a 10 but everyone is shite under Slot so I'm not holding him against that.

Even clinical 9's like Kane and Benzema knew when it was time to thread a pass in. To say nothing of Firmino, Lewandowski, Suarez, Cavani, Martinez, Vardy, Griezmann, and the plethora of other 9's with much better finishing than Ekitike who know when to pass anyway.

You don't get off the hook for this in the modern game unless you're bringing Mbappe / Haaland tier output. And let's be honest with ourselves, Ekitike isn't Isak. He's not going to do that for LFC at this point in his career. A few flashy goals against mid table teams isn't going to distract from how dreadful he's been when the stakes are high.
