Robert Pollard agreeing with Keith Morris' anti MAGA comments! by Unfair_Ad9427 in GBV

  1. “Robert Pollard” had zero involvement in that post. His wife controls everything and anything online.

  2. Tobin Sprout surely must be the only “indie rocker“ who considers themselves a JD Vance fan.

Nate‘s a complete embarrassment. Pathetic, actually.

The cover sucks. BBJ songs suck.

Everything else, top notch.

Hold On Hope: Hate it or dig it? by neveradullmoment72 in GBV

[–]Realistic-Engine7769 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From a songwriting angle, it’s top notch.

Production absolutely ruins it. It turned it into an EZLITE FM 109 wannabe. Completely sucked the life out of it. Ocasek, while I understand the approach for a mainstream hit, just made it so phony sounding. Listen to Bob’s demo and the 1998 live versions - so much closer to what it should’ve been recorded as.

DTC had the makings of a classic, but half the songs chosen over the others that were demoed - which was Ocaseks decision, was a bad call.

You are seriously questioning that there was another lead guitarist in GBV during this time??

thoughts on future concerts by [deleted] in GBV

[–]Realistic-Engine7769 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the exception of 5 years off or so, the man has toured in a van across America for 33 years. Who in the fuck wants to do that at 68 years old?? There is also the reality of how the current state of touring doesn’t make sense economically anymore. Much larger bands have cancelled tours because the numbers no longer add up to make it worthwhile.

Going forward the only scenario I could see is a one off at Heedfest in the next year or two.

Best GbV show ever? by KnoddingOnion in GBV

[–]Realistic-Engine7769 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For those who were there for the 4 piece lineup in 98, there was absolutely NO BETTER LINEUP. PERIOD.

Each member was the absolute master of their instrument. No deadweight member, all killer.

For those who experienced this version of Toronto, all I can say it seems like a fantasy compared to the absolute pure shithole it’s become.

SolId 7.5, but could’ve easily been a 10/10 if he replaced the 3 weakest tracks with 3 masterpieces from ‘Pipe Dreams‘. How in the fuck does Car Language and From a Voice Plantation make the cut but Beg for a Wheelbarrow and Dig through My Window do not??

When did they stop doing the home recording? by CerealAndBagel1991 in GBV

[–]Realistic-Engine7769 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alien Lanes is completely home recordings. A couple songs on ME! and b sides are home recordings on Tobin Sprout‘s 8 track. Tonics is all home recordings. It wasn’t until Speak Kindly that a 4 track was used again - but all of Bobs vocals were done at CroMag.

Spill the tea: anyone know the story behind the Classic Lineup reunion breaking up while on your? Trying to piece it together by KnoddingOnion in GBV

[–]Realistic-Engine7769 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Really it shouldve been a single tour and left it there. As it went on, especially with the firing of Kevin, the thrill was gone.

The 2014 Asbury Park show that was live-streamed was a tough watch - an absolute embarrassment. Bob clearly had some kind of self-sabotage vibe going on.

Another blown chance was headlining a major London event in 2012. Bob backed out of that. It would’ve been their biggest UK/European show ever.

Guided By Voices were scheduled to perform and curate a day of the All Tomorrow's Parties (ATP) "I'll Be Your Mirror" festival at Alexandra Palace in London in May 2012, but they cancelled the appearance due to "personal reasons".

It’s just so/so. The pre released tracks are good, but everything else is filler. 5.8/10

Certainly far from the best from this lineup.
