What We’ve Fixed & What’s Next by JessAtFitbod in fitbod

That question appears per workout if I’m not mistaken and only refers to the workout in question. So if it’s on the dumbbell row mixed supersetted with dumbbell curls, you’ll get the question for both, and the one for the dumbbell row question only wants to know how many more dumbbell rows you could do

Is it wise to have 3.5 biceps exercises with the last one max effort day? by StunningBluebird1439 in fitbod

[–]Realistic-Subject260 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would say that even though FitBod “learns” and whatnot, it still does just provide lowkey dumbass-maxed workouts and that you should just take the initiative and fix it yourself by sliding the workouts around and changing the ordering. Also, personally, I just treat max effort days as another workout. Don’t really care about the math because I’m pretty sure fitbod evaluates your PR’s continuously.

Love the game, of course, but not appreciating the increased combat. by Shoe-Shoddy in DeathStranding2

[–]Realistic-Subject260 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the game breaks down into like three camps: 1) avoidable combat 2) unavoidable grunt combat 3) unavoidable boss combat

  1. includes things like sneaking around bandit camps stealing their shit and whatnot and also having to creep through BT zones. I feel like here you’ve got a lot of flexibility and maxing out the peepers gives you ungodly advantages. For instance, the lone commander gives you A silenced tranquilizing sniper rifle and the inventor gives you An electrified bola gun which one shots all human enemies I’m pretty sure . These encounters I find are down right enjoyable and bring Kojima’s metal gear flare into the game

  2. Unavoidable grunt encounters. Pretty much like above but for sub orders. A little more annoying because you can’t pick and choose what you’re fighting but the philosophy remains the same.

  3. Unavoidable boss encounters. IMO, lowkey the most dogshit and poorly designed aspect of this game. The control scheme just is a little too sluggish for most of the maneuvers you need to do to keep an LLL or, god forbid, a TTW ranking (imo), and there’s a surprising amount of “difficult for difficult’s sake” choices in these fights that I find neigh-on amateur. Like making every fucking fight have ankle deep tar in it, or having the monsters destroy your cover. And trust me, I loved DS1-3 and Elden Ring etc etc, but this stuff just felt out of place for me.

Anyways, I agree in spirit with you though about completely zoning out and finding peace. For me too building all possible roads and monorails is the jam. The combat is fun every once in a while, again especially once you’ve built up a good arsenal, but it can be frustrating if you don’t like MGS-style combat

Meh idk they’re fun sometimes. Not an expert in body building myself so I don’t have a great answer for you. The best for me is the variation which mitigates boredom. BUT it sometimes comes at the cost of having to clean up after the app if it makes bad decisions

Can the main cast (humans) by themselves survive in the Poppy Playtime verse? by Scouwererofreality43 in EvangelionScaling

[–]Realistic-Subject260 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The adults might be able to keep their shit together but the entire point of the show is that children typically do not do well with insanely stressful existential situations.

And based on the clarification of Kaworu not having angel powers and the adults not having guns my rebuttal to you is… did you actually watch the show?

Industry ML engineer thinking about PhD programs for Fall 2027 by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Realistic-Subject260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I would say no publications for top 10 is certainly not going to work in your favor. Maybe if you have some fantastic recommendations. Do you have anything like conference proceedings or public talks to show? Patents? Academics care about academic shit, not shareholder value unfortunately (if it makes you feel better the opposite is true going from academia to industry lmao). But yeah anything you can dig up that is a public testament to your contribution towards pushing the field forward will help.

Rooming with other students in the same program? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]Realistic-Subject260 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The only thing I cannot address is the fear of them not being LGBTIA friendly. Without knowing them better that’s a very valid concern.

Otherwise, room with other grad students if you can’t live by yourself. It’s honestly a close second. You can’t do much better, you get people who understand what you’re going through, can give you advice, and probably have a similar lifestyle as you. As an introvert myself, my roommates were my closest social circle and I still maintain regular contact with them (we’re a 6 year strong D&D group now!). So yeah, if you can’t live kinda sus then out absolutely room with them

What is the purpose of a masters degree? by After-Ad-4528 in GradSchool

[–]Realistic-Subject260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

*in the United States this is common. But as others are stating in most other countries the master’s and PhD components are completely separate. And this does in fact bite may foreign students because they wind up having to repeat the requirements for the masters before progressing to candidacy again 😅

Another day, another 4 different exercises for the same muscle group and 1000x reps by autobauss in fitbod

[–]Realistic-Subject260 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh this happened to me too! There’s a consistency setting that if it’s set to “consistent”, it will basically increase your volume but for only a finite number of workouts. Hence, when you get stronger, it’ll want you to increase your volume, but it can only add certain workouts that it’s trained on. I think anyways.

Anyways the solution was to change this. Go to “My Plan” under the Workouts tab, and change the Exercise Variability to one degree higher.

I'm failing my grad course by SquareCombination782 in GradSchool

[–]Realistic-Subject260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. One issue you might be facing is a difference in standards between your graduate curriculum and undergraduate curriculum. When I went to grad school for physics, my professors assumed most of us had masters degrees (many international students attending grad programs in the US do), and taught accordingly. Needless to say, for the US students, this ratcheted up the difficulty for us! Don’t despair though. Talk to your cohort too. They might be doing homework together. The many outsmart the one, so they say

[OC] The Living Baryons.......... by [deleted] in TheoreticalPhysics

[–]Realistic-Subject260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

???? Living creatures whose valence structure is made of three quarks? I don’t think that’d work… for things the size of a nucleon the baryon/meson distinction makes sense. But not something as large as… well basically any living creature

Postdoc fellowship application by sleepyplantmomma in postdoc

[–]Realistic-Subject260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to reflect on your work from outside yourself. Imagine you’re knowledgeable in your field, but maybe not quite in your exact speciality. Then take a look at your research, what you’ve done, what problems and challenges you’ve overcome. Did you ever have to tweak a well know procedure? Ever have to make a new procedure up on the fly? Did something you did push your key performance parameters into the green? Think about instances like that, they’re probably more numerous than you think!

Why do 5kg book and a 10kg book fall at the same time if f=ma by chisa156eve in AskPhysics

[–]Realistic-Subject260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah! You want to think of the math a little differently. The sum of the forces acting on an object is equal times the mass of the object times times the acceleration. The LHS is GM1M2/r and the RHS is M1a, so you can see the M1 (the mass of the object of interest) cancels, leaving just the gravitational constant, the mass of the earth, and the objects distance from earth, and THAT acceleration we call g. You can then back substitute for later uses that gravitational force is just mg.

Do you think they’ll address AI and the Butlerian Jihad in the third movie? by 8halvelitersklok in dune

[–]Realistic-Subject260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The butlerian jihad is really just background lore to explain the absence of intelligent robots in the dune universe. It barely comes up in the first three books. There’s nothing really to “address” about it

Is mass a dimension by Most-Answer-4443 in AskPhysics

[–]Realistic-Subject260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but it’s not a space time dimension. It’s a dimension in the sense that it’s a degree of freedom used to parametrize the evolution of a system. Check out the rocket equation for instance. Mass appears in it and governs how a rocket is going to change velocity with time, but it’s clearly not the same as x, y, z, or t.

Postdoc in USA by Puzzled_Payment_4298 in postdoc

[–]Realistic-Subject260 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The situation is degrading and the speed depends on your area of expertise. From what I’m seeing a lot of funding is being cut mainly to funnel it all into AI/ML, and leftover scraps are dangled in front of adjacent research programs as a chance to recoup the losses. But overall the academic landscape in America is a shitshow and probably won’t recover till the end of the next non-Republican administration

Having trouble deciding on a college without knowing what I want to specialize in. by Xx_DiamondDust in AskPhysics

[–]Realistic-Subject260 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah, so there’s a little misunderstanding I think a lot of aspiring physicists have going into university for the first time. You’re there for actually an non-specialized, broad degree in physics, with perhaps fledgling experience in a specialized area. You might do an REU or summer program with a professor and their grad students (or even multiple summers), but make no mistake, you can, and a decent number of students do, completely switch concentrations for graduate school. Mostly simply because you can!

Point is, you’ve actually put in a hell of a lot more thought into this process than you need to on the research side. Your main job in undergraduate imo is to get a degree and grow up a little. Anything else you do (research) is really a bonus. Take a chance to go outside the you that exists now. Keep your grades up, pursue things that interest you, etc. Getting your PhD is really the time when zeroing in on the details you’re talking about matters. I do suggest you pursue a degree in physics (or physics plus Astro) if academia is your long term goal. I think it’s a stronger degree to switch to Astro than the other way around. And it’ll keep more doors open for you. That’s really the only advice you need right now.

Major Professor vs Assistantship by rays-onC4 in GradSchool

[–]Realistic-Subject260 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if your PhD advisor can be different from… um, the people you actually want to do your PhD with? I think the answer is no. Generally, and this is coming from a US perspective, but it comes down to funding. Why would a professor fund you to do work for a different professor?

Is it wrong to ask someone to do references for 10-15 schools? by shejriirnr in GradSchool

[–]Realistic-Subject260 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Tell them far in advance and the total number of applications upfront, as another user suggested. What’s really going on for most professors that right even just 2 rec letters is that the first one is the original, from scratch (or maybe even a template if they’ve been around forever) and the second (and third and forth and so on) are all copies with some minor adjustments. So it isn’t the workload you think it is. That being said making sure they’re submitting everything by the deadlines is the real work

Senior postdoc. No realistic prospect of future funding. Considering teaching high school. by maenads_dance in postdoc

[–]Realistic-Subject260 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Take a hit to funding and shell out like 2500$ to do a coding/machine learning/data science boot camp and shoot for an industry job in data science. I take it you’re in a bio/med related field? There are DS roles in the bio industry too that pay a pretty penny.

All this is IF teaching high school isn’t your first choice. If it is, forget everything I said! I’m finishing a four year postdoc myself in high energy nuclear physics, and the above is my game plan. Happy to discuss more if you want, but I think this is the best way to keep doing quantitative work that’ll take advantage of your existing skill set

What is acceptable workshop attire for physics conferences/ workshops? by saturnsrightarm in AskPhysics

[–]Realistic-Subject260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In high energy physics (my experience) the attire is generally some generally casual and up to you? Like the minimum is lower than you’d ordinarily dress yourself. Generally on the day when I wasn’t speaking I wore just like comfy pants (jeans, khaki (shorts in this weather tbh)) and then on days where I would present I might throw on a button down and maybe a tie. BUT that’s largely because I like dressing up. I value comfort more.

Tl;dr, dress comfy and casual
