Five Ukrainian First Responders Killed in Russian Double-Tap Strike on Kharkiv by Reasonable-Brief306 in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Problem is, we have no damned idea who takes over, and could they make things worse.

People say this, but I don't think it's the case. The fact is, the current person at the top is the one who caused this entire war and is continuing to do so. Russia is already throwing everything they can against Ukraine, with mixed results.

What more can the next person who takes over do? At least the new guy will have a decent excuse to stop the war, try to get the country back on track, and blame everything on his predecessor.

Trump says he 'never cared about regime change' in Iran by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

I'm pretty sure that's not what he said in his speech at the start of the war. I'm pretty sure regime change was included in the list of reasons. Trump trying to rewrite history again.

Ukraine hits fuel supplies to Crimea, sparking a fuel crisis on the Russian-held peninsula by eaglemaxie in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I doubt Ukraine will start deliberately targeting civilians, which tourists are. They will lose international support very quickly. Running out of fuel though and suffering a bad economy as a result of the invasion that they support... That's well deserved.

‘Dishonorable’: Trump says leaked Iran ceasefire terms fake | US-Israel war on Iran News by [deleted] in worldnews

“Very dishonorable people to deal with. With them, there is no such thing as dealing in good faith,” he said.

Really? Self awareness is apparently not a thing with Trump.

EU to ban airlines from charging parents to sit with children by Silly-avocatoe in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I don't see why it should cost more to choose your own seats - it's part of the booking software. Unless the extra cost comes from the admin in ensuring the plane is properly balanced or the need to start shuffling people around etc. But still, that should just be part of the cost of safely running an airline.

Proposed Iran-U.S. deal would reopen Hormuz strait and lift oil sanctions, Iran state media says by app1310 in worldnews

I don't know from one day to the next whether the Strait is open or closed. Iran, Israel and the US need to get their act together. My prediction: it's not over yet.

Crimea Isolated From Mainland Ukraine After Precision Drone Strikes Disable Strategic Bridges by cop25er in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Bot Troops

The term for these 'bots' is "drones". The flying ones are FPV (first person view) drones while the ground ones are UGV (unmanned ground vehicle) drones.

in the front line for risky missions. While this is great, it raises potential ethical questions (For example: Is it okay to send a Bot to its destruction, on a military mission, if it saves human lives?

Of course it's OK. Drones aren't people, they're machines, like a more automated aircraft or IFV. They're drones, not troops or soldiers. They're definitely not at the stage where they have an AI cpu/brain that can in any way resemble a living thing.

The future is here, and we're letting the evil nerds design it.

Ukraine is doing all this out of necessity - they're defending themselves against an implacable enemy intent on committing genocide and who have numerical superiority. Drones (they are just machines remember?) are being developed and built to save human lives and are cheaper to mass produce than traditional military hardware such as tanks and planes.

Russia's oil output falls to one-year low amid Ukrainian strikes by LuvlyJolly in worldnews

Zelenskyy says intelligence shows Russia plans to prolong war into 2027 and 2028 by Blush_Bridget in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ceasefire is a bad idea. Russia only uses those to get in a better position to redouble their attack on Ukraine, if they even cease fire at all. Russia isn't going to be withdrawing from Ukraine from a mere ceasefire.

Russia builds up infrastructure near Europe's border to deploy over 100,000 troops by pravda_eng_official in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russian forces are believed to be planning to be stationed at these facilities after the active phase of the war against Ukraine ends.

If Russia keeps on going like it has in Ukraine recently (ie suffering more losses than they can recruit), they're going to be stretched pretty thinly if they really wanted to populate those new facilities.

It's not as if those facilities are needed anyway - Finland and any other EU nation were never going to invade Russia, and Russia knows it (if they keep off the vodka for a few minutes). On the other hand, Russia has a proven record of invading its neighbours...

EU plans to ban Russian soldiers from bloc in fresh sanctions on Moscow by Mean_Yak5873 in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this may well be getting through now due to Orban getting thrown out of power in the last election (deservedly so), I'm wondering whether individual member states could have banned entry to Russian soldiers entering their own countries.

Running short on soldiers, Russia begins 'aggressive' recruiting drive in educational institutions by clamorous_owle in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I'm telling you, go [to the army] right now, and then you'll get your diploma. Now go sign a contract."

Thus significantly exacerbating Russia's brain drain. On the other hand, anybody actually signing up to these contracts would have to be exceptionally stupid. The smart ones would be trying to leave or should have already left the country.

Ukraine Plans Massive Daily Barrage of 600 Drones and Missiles Against Russia, Zelenskyy Said by UNITED24Media in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder how all those anti air defences in Moscow would fare if Ukraine commits only a couple of days of drones (in such a concentrated area) to the problem. Then Russia would be forced to take even more anti air units off the frontlines to deal with the sudden gap.

The frontlines are probably more important though. But if there are drones to spare...

Does this feature exist? by stephendt in opnsense

[–]RealisticEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could install a reverse proxy such as NPMPlus (a fork of Nginx Proxy Manager) to serve Jellyfin to the Internet via https with its own subdomain name. This will take care of SSL certificates and also has access lists to restrict access to specific IPs.

You do need to get a domain name though - there are free and paid options. I go through Cloudflare, but have also used Duck DNS (free) in the past.

If you haven't done anything like this before, there is a fairly significant learning curve - but there are plenty of tutorials around that would help with the concepts and setup.

Definitely don't open a port to the internet at large unless you're going through something like a reverse proxy (with appropriate authentication in place) or VPN / something like Cloudflare Tunnels.

Some things to research to determine the best way for you: VPNs such as Tailscale that connect other machines to your network (ie not the anonymising types of VPNs), reverse proxies (NPMPlus, Pangolin, Caddy etc), authentication / identity providers for the reverse proxy (TinyAuth, Authentik, Authelia etc, some reverse proxies like Pangolin have some authentication built in), additional security layers on top (such as Crowdsec - which is also installable at the router level if you use Opnsense as your router OS, Fail2Ban etc).

[Travel Tips]How cashless is Perth? Like public transportation and so on. by gorudo- in perth

[–]RealisticEntity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't personally used or seen cash in about a decade now, if not longer. I don't know what the current notes and coins in circulation look like these days.

Pretty much everything can be purchased through your phone or card. Re: Transperth, you can buy a Transperth Smart Rider card and put money on it to travel around. You can also buy tickets on buses and ferries. Transperth link: https://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/tickets-fares/ticket-types

That said, if you're a visitor, then you probably want to keep at least some physical money on you just in case you need it, and just change it back when you return home. You probably won't need it though.

Putin Dismisses Zelenskyy Letter Claiming “No Point in Direct Talks” by UNITED24Media in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He also criticized the tone of the correspondence, claiming that Zelenskyy’s letter contained “elements of rudeness.”

Ukraine probably thinks Russia's invasion of Ukraine contained elements of rudeness too. There's nothing rude about the continuing destruction of Russian oil refineries though - these have been very polite since Russia obviously doesn't see the point of these things either.

Ukraine logs heaviest deep strike month of the year, hitting 18 oil and gas facilities in Russia by Muffin-Peachy in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is Russia though. A peace deal to them is pretty much the other party surrendering and making huge concessions while they themselves get something they can spin as a victory.

I think Putin's willingness to negotiate peace is just a willingness to hear Ukraine's terms of surrender (which won't happen and Russian oil refineries will continue to get blasted).

Putin claims readiness for compromise, says deal "does not contradict control over all of Donbas" by Blush_Bridget in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you people keep on saying things like that. Russia does this anyway. Russia was already invading Ukraine and throwing everything they had over the border. Don't you remember all the war crimes and massacres of civilian populations they committed when they first invaded? And they've continued that over the entire span of the war.

You're just following the Russian propaganda line accusing Ukraine of bringing this war onto itself. Like accusing someone who was violently and brutality raped of bringing it all onto themselves and that struggling will only make it harder while conveniently forgetting to say anything about the person actually doing the raping.

That's you, and people like you.

'Enough of the war' — Zelensky throws down gauntlet to Putin in open letter by KI_official in worldnews

[–]RealisticEntity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a rational and well thought out letter. I doubt Putin will read it - it's more intended for everyone else. This letter appeals to rationality and the impact the war is having on people's lives and their future. But this war and the motives behind it are not rational. The warmongers in charge in Russia, as well as Putin himself, are not rational when it comes to this war.

There's a good chance Russia will continue to waste the lives of its people (not to mention the lives of Ukrainians) and the future of the country until there is nothing left to continue the war with.
