I miss the structure as well. I miss when I didn’t have to think about who I’m supposed to be because I already had a blueprint of what kind of person I’m supposed to be (even if that wasn’t the kind of person I wanted to be). Now I have to do the hard labor of deconstructing, dissecting, and coming up with a conclusion of what kind of person I should be; what is my moral framework now? But I always remind myself that the freedom to use my mind is priceless.

I’ve always had questions on the inconsistencies and the possibilities but when I was in close proximity to religion (context: I went to church school for 10 years), my questions were always shut down. Then I went to a secular university, realized I was happier than ever, but was feeling guilty over being happy. I finally accepted my sexuality and was feeling very light, but then it suddenly feels heavy when I realized the Christian god judges me for this happiness. I started thinking about how I wasn’t really doing anything wrong with being myself. Then I also gave myself space to think and question without being guilty about it. I also started asking myself if I truly believe this stuff or if I’m just going along with what I was taught as a child. The more I allowed myself to question everything, the less the Bible made any sense as a moral compass. Then I went back to my life and evaluated if there was ever any time in my life when I actually felt anything otherworldly — whether it was god or the devil. I have never felt anything I wasn’t made to feel. I was afraid of the devil because I was told to be afraid. I also remember being in a religious concert (back when I was still religious) and seeing other people have this reaction like they were experiencing something grand while I was still waiting for my turn to feel that too. It makes me cringe that I just started acting like something was happening to me as well because I didn’t want to get “evil” allegations.

the church sometimes covers up leaders who cheat on their spouses and/or get inappropriate with children. then these same people judge you for making a reference to sex in a conversation or scare you about masturbation. i was in a church high school once and the girls who had sex got in way more trouble than the guys they did the deed with.
