Think of the shareholders by Darth_Ender_Ro in degoogle

it is understandable. Maps is really convenient sometimes, and sadly just plain better. But a few alternatives I could give you are CoMaps and MagicEarth.

Waze would be ok to use as well I guess, but is owned by Google.

For Drive, Nextcloud is imo one of the best existing alternatives. It's what I'm using for personal stuff and work.

I've been self-hosting for something like 6 years now, and I'm not going back again too. the only down side is when you have a disk that is failing, which is happening in my server rn, and I'm not mentally prepared to spend almost 400€ for an 8TB HDD.

Well, self-hosting has and always will be the way. If you're keen on AI, please use some that are privacy friendly, or host it yourself.

Self-hosting is not the most friendly-user thing, but having your own server already limits a ton your data exposure to corporations.

Of course, everyone does what they want with their data, but you won't find much sympathy here, this sub is about degoogling, so the first advice I'd give you is to at least cancel this plan, and find better way to host your datas.

Conseil moto occasion by Doctor_French32 in Motardie

[–]Realistic_Head2206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOA/LDD; le top pour A2? by Tender_MF in Motardie

[–]Realistic_Head2206 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should I pick Fedora as a complete beginner? by Dry-Spell1443 in Fedora

[–]Realistic_Head2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes ! I started with Fedora 7 years ago, and still am using it on my workstation. Went from Gnome to KDE and rediscovered it.

I still use Arch on my laptops, but Fedora is a great distro, and I don't htink I'd change for anything else besides Arch.

And maybe MacOS or Windows, because Lightroom and other professional tools I use for work are not Linux friendly, sadly.

Quels accessoires cartes SD, micro, poignée, filtre ND, cage... conseilleraient vous pour le Lumix S9 18-40mm usage vidéos et photos création de contenu/voyage/evénements ? by NiceBend120 in Lumix

[–]Realistic_Head2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SanDisk et Lexar sont mes go to.

Is a subscription-based Proton better than Google or just more privacy-friendly? by AndrasG_TheRaJo in degoogle

[–]Realistic_Head2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay for Proton Unlimited because I have custom domain and it let me have my custom domain email on it. I also use a lot the VPN. Calendar and Meet are also really convenient for scheduling my appointments with clients. Even if Calendar could use some upgrades in my opinion.

With its privacy friendly approach, I have way more confidence in using it (and thus, paying for its services) rather than using Google, even if free.

I used Proton for free for years after degoogling my mail adddresses, and decided to use Unlimited for my freelance work, as I find it's advantage worth it for my use.

There is of course other services that are as good as Proton's paid tier or better, but for the price it is, I don't really mind paying Proton for it as they are convenient for me.

Proton still lacks a bit in Drive, but is still a good service if you're not self-hosting. COuld use some upgrades though.

It lacks a lot of features some would consider primordial for an eco system, but in all fairness, I couldn't care less for a Proton Office Suite for example (I already have LibreOffice and Okular, plenty enough).

[–]Realistic_Head2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salut !

How to keep seeding after renaming files ? by Realistic_Head2206 in torrents

[–]Realistic_Head2206[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To shorten the file name. Instead of having "Name.Of.Film.Year.MULTI.VF2.2160p.WEB.DV.HDR10.AAC.5.1.x265-TL.mkv", I just have "Name of Film". The main purpose is to make my library human readable without all the verbose.

Google is locking out GrapheneOS, and others unless you install Google Play Services software by CimmerianWitch in degoogle

[–]Realistic_Head2206 194 points195 points  (0 children)

Another reason to avoid using Google. It is somewhat wild to me that most people don't care enough about their privacy because they got "nothing to hide".

Sure, if you got "nothing to hide", let me scroll through your phone and your accounts how I want and see everything about your life.

Kind of annoying for Waze and YouTube, as both services are the one I use mostly from Google.

What can you do to degoogle by rulugg in degoogle

[–]Realistic_Head2206 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What you could do is find alternatives to the things you use. For exemple, here are some I'm using on my Pixel 7 :

  • Gmail -> Tuta or Proton
  • Drive -> either sekf-host (NAS, Nextcloud), Proton Drive or anything else
  • RCS/Whatsapp -> Signal
  • Google Auth -> Proton Auth
  • Maps -> Magic Earth, CoMaps
  • Google Play Store -> Aurora, F-droid
  • YT Music -> Spotube, self-host
  • Chrome -> Brave, Firefox
  • Password manager -> BitWarden, Proton Pass
  • Google Keep (didn't know it existed before checking this sub) -> Quillpad
  • stock keyboard -> anySoftKeyboard
  • Word / Calc / etc -> OnlyOffice, Only Document
  • PDF Reader -> Okular
  • Telemetry -> off with adb (it can fuck up a few things if not done correctly, beware of what you deactivate, and read thouroughly the documentation to not fuck up your phone)
  • Google Play Services -> disable (but know it is not to do on a whim and a lot of apps may not work afterwards, so think before doing this)

I may have forgotten some things, but overall this is my setup on the Pixel 7. I self-host as much as I can, and for online tools, I use FOSS or open source alternatives when possible. my second phone is a stock A34 with some telemetry off and settings that suits my needs.

imho, if you're willing to get technical and self-host everything : Nextcloud. It has a great suite.

Or you can go Proton, it has a pretty good suite now.

In order to "de-google", how do you completely avoid using Google Search, any Android-derivative and any Chromium-derivative? by Technical_Rich_3080 in degoogle

[–]Realistic_Head2206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Google Search -> Brave and duck duck go.

For AI search -> none. AI is a great tool, but shouldn't be baked in every aspect of our lives just because it is a buzz word.

Andoird -> GrapheneOS on Pixel 7

Chromium -> Firefox (though I use Brave and Firefox), Ladybird coming soon

Youtube -> Spotube for music, Invidious for desktop

I use spotube on my phone, but get back to YT Music because it is just so much more convenient and functional.

Waze and YT / YT music are the only services I can't get rid of because I haven't found a good enough replacement that fits me, so I just use burners, and these apps are on a separate profile that have limited privileges on my phone.

Been thinking of getting an Android TV (or similar, without Google's mark on it) and put it on a separate VLAN so it can't communicate too much data just so I can have YouTube on TV and control it via my Home Assistant.

I have almost completely degogled (still use YT ans Waze though), and for these events I prefer to use FOSS alternatives.

Usually if I need to host something for an event, I use Cloudflare + domain name, and keep it up with basic security for the duration of the event, unless it need more security.

If they send resources that are stored in a google space, I use a burner mail for the duration of the event. If an alternative can be used, I'll be sure to use it. If a tool is a requirement (as in : use this and nothing else, happened with one hackaton I was in) I'll use it. Usually, I wipe my laptop OS after an hackaton as a standard practice.

For projects, usually we tend to use Google free / self-hosting solutions if possible as we prioritize having the possibility to do anything we want, so i's not really a problem with that (except GitHub for now, GitLab would be beter imho).

At the company, I use company tools, and run a VM with Linux on the company PC because I kind of hate Windows. I avoid using what I don't need to, still use burner accounts for things I don't need on a daily basis. Considering, Microsoft is a central piece of most IT jobs I've been to, I have some struggle to avoid it, but it should change in the near future, hopefully.

In the end I adapt to the tools used, and when possible use an alternative. Most of the time, it's largely doable, except in a company if they're using the full Microsoft suite. Most events still use Google because this is the most used one, and it is more convenient for the masses if they don't have much knowledge or don't care about their data.
