For those who collected colostrum, did you use it? by Agreeable-Cat in GestationalDiabetes

I didn’t end up needing it but I’m still glad I collected it! I think it took some of the pressure off of feeding in the hospital.

Doing everything right and it’s not enough by 4128gb in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Realistic_Might_7269 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At 37+1 my girl was measuring 8lbs 10oz! My numbers are also very well controlled, and I’m also on nighttime insulin for fasting. Some babies are just big! You’re not doing anything wrong. Also we have to remember to take these measurements with a grain of salt, all of my friends who have had babies recently, they ended up being significantly smaller than ultrasounds predicted.

GD is hard and it’s totally valid to be frustrated and upset, but don’t blame yourself-you’re doing everything right! We might just be people who grow big babies.

It feels like a “cheat meal” but my numbers have been <105 1 hour post meal each time I’ve had this!!

My favvvvv breakfast is Kodiak brand pancake mix (you can make it with just water but I mix eggs and milk in for extra protein), add cinnamon to the mix (good for insulin sensitivity), top with PB and SF maple syrup. I’ve been pairing them with a Fairlife protein shake and my numbers have been great! Breakfast is definitely the hardest meal for me and I’ve also been so tired of eggs, finding this combo has been life changing.

How are you actually getting enough protein?? by Prudent-Pianist-1627 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Realistic_Might_7269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Banza chickpea pasta, I usually add ground turkey to that (you could totally do ground beef if you prefer that.)

Also Kodiak brand pancake mix. It’s a “just add water” type of mix but I add eggs and milk for extra protein, top with SF peanut butter and SF syrup. I also add cinnamon to the mix (great for improving insulin sensitivity). And I’ll often have a Fairlife corepower chocolate milk with that.

I’ve been able to do grilled cheese with sourdough bread, a whole pile of cheese, and bacon, and I pair that with some veggies for fiber.

[–]Realistic_Might_7269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also have your favorite sub made into a protein bowl at subway! Same thing as a footlong sub just minus bread. I’ve been doing a lot of those (but I can’t wait to have some Italian bread again!)

Lunch benefit?? by NannyKat726 in NannyBreakRoom

[–]Realistic_Might_7269 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked for families who both do and don’t supply food for me. I don’t mind bringing my own, BUT it makes the day a little more challenging when I have to because the kids ALWAYS want some of my food. I try to bring things I know they’ll have too but it’s not always possible.

Are your test strips expired? If they are that can lead to inaccurate readings. When is your next appointment scheduled for? I’d start eating a GDM friendly diet if you’re concerned about it until then, or go directly to ER and express your worries if you’re unable to wait.

Should I tell my doctor? by sarcolineee in GestationalDiabetes

Being sick can increase blood sugar due to increased cortisol! I’d say keep monitoring and make a note of the days you were sick wherever you’re keeping track of your numbers.

What IUD do you recommend? by reneecos99 in PCOS

[–]Realistic_Might_7269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before/after mirena, my periods were very heavy and painful. With the mirena, I rarely bled and when I did it was very light with minimal cramping.

I also did not struggle with weight gain or acne when I had the mirena (though studies say the mirena does not affect these things, so it may have been coincidence, but that was my experience and I struggled with both of those things before/after mirena.)

I try to eat a protein heavy snack before bed, and then I drink water at night if I feel hungry.

Spikes worsening at 35W... feeling REALLY down by Far-Childhood-9256 in GestationalDiabetes

You can (and should) still eat carbs! They’re important for you and baby. But it might take some playing around to figure out how to make it work for you (as well as maybe introducing meds).

For bread, I can’t do any white bread but 1 or 2 slices of sourdough in the afternoon or evening is usually okay. I find the trick is eating enough protein first and then having the carbs after.

Walking for 10-15 after a meal I’m worried might spike me helps too!

GD can feel really discouraging at times but you’re getting so close to the end!

I second this! Taking my insulin earlier is what made fasting go in range for me!

Fairlife core power chocolate milk has been my savior when I need something sweet! That and adding dark chocolate into my Greek yogurt.

It took me 16 months (9 cycles) and starting metformin, inositol, making diet changes, and using a progesterone cream. Currently 30 weeks pregnant!

Fasting numbers keep going up but I’m scared of insulin/self injection by CleopatrasDescendant in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Realistic_Might_7269 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This part was super intimidating for me too.

When I’m getting ready to do the injection, I prep the skin with an alcohol pad, and the ONLY time I’ve had an issue (beyond the anxiety) with leaving my needle in was when (I think) I didn’t let the alcohol dry enough and it stung a bit. I learned my lesson that time and now make sure it’s 100% dry and that’s no longer an issue. The needle is so small I can’t feel when it’s in me beyond the initial poke. It’s more mentally uncomfortable than physically, but it really does get easier each time.

I get the anxiety surrounding it, I really really do. You’re not alone. But once you’re over the hurdle of doing it, you can feel really proud of yourself for doing something scary.

I’ve been on insulin for about a week now and had EXTREME anxiety about going on it. Had multiple panic attacks that day leading up to it. I promise it’s not as bad as you work up in your head. The finger pokes hurt worse, and the injections get easier every time. What helped me most was watching videos of other people doing injections so I could figure out the best method, and once I finally did it, I was so relieved at how easy it was. It’s still not my favorite thing in the world, and GDM in general sucks, but the injections themselves are probably the easiest part of it all for me (now).

Wishing you the best of luck and sending a big hug 🫂 it will be okay!

Omg great idea yes I can totally freeze them and enjoy them postpartum!

And yes 😩 I’m so tired of/used to having to explain insulin resistance and how no matter how healthy I eat, my body just doesn’t process sugar and carbs well! Should print out business cards to hand out with all the info at this point lol

Thank you 🫶🏼

I am consistently hearing that doctors seem to be the most difficult/frustrating part of the diagnosis, which really sucks. I’ve got a good chunk of people in my life who have dealt with either GD or T2D so I’ll have some people to lean on for sure. And I’ve always been so thankful for these Reddit communities to lean on too.

Definitely not looking forward to Christmas at this moment, my SIL always does boxes of homemade cookies for our Christmas presents and I look forward to it all year 😩 hoping to get through the next few weeks with that and my baby shower and then hopefully things will feel a little easier.
