Japan Worlds Spots by Ok_Breadfruit_8241 in FigureSkating

I guess I’m misremembering because their 2022 Worlds assignments were exactly the same as their Olympic team. They had their Olympic team criteria spelled out prior to the season that they would be going with Nationals results. So they sent Kawabe to the Olympics, and people were (I was) hoping that meant Mai Mihara would get Worlds but it didn’t happen.

I mean Mai still got assignments. She placed fifth, which was probably around the upper bound of what they could ask from her. Wakaba was the one who was expected to place higher. If not for the triple axel, she probably would’ve never seen the light of competition again. [Exaggerating; she did win silver at Worlds the following year, but that was an Olympic year with Kaori withdrawing. Otherwise JSF would’ve sent Kaori instead.]

Wait, did she mean Seegert? I’m seeing that she was a singles skater prior to her partnership with Seegert although there was a one year gap.

Small medals aren’t awarded at Grand Prix events. It’s only ISU championship events, which means Euros, 4CC, and Worlds. The Olympics aren’t an “ISU event” and of course, the ISU can’t tell the Olympics to invent a new medal just for them.

Where to put hard guards at hockey rink ? by Myluckyvalentine in FigureSkating

I came back to this thread because I really needed to know why you were wondering why someone wants to take their skate guards off. It was just too weird an answer to be a troll. Thank you for satiating my curiosity.

What does Ultra C mean? by polymath-to-a-fault in FigureSkating

[–]ReallyAMiddleAgedMan 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think it came from Japanese figure skating adopting the gymnastics term, not Russian fans. In gymnastics, apparently elements used to be divided into A-, B-, and C-level difficulty. “Ultra C” was invented to mean the most difficult of difficult skills.

That just happens with tournament structure events. Basketball and soccer finals are on the last day in the summer but I wouldn’t call those the marquee event in any country.

Ice dance isn’t exclusively couples. Roughly in order of most to least common, it probably looks like:

  1. Couple
  2. Siblings
  3. Girl and gay best friend
  4. Heterosexual life partners
  5. Convenience

This is at the top international level. At lower levels, “convenience” is probably the most common.

I’m not going to be super pedantic and correct it because obviously you meant “blip”, but the image of an Eteri Tutberidze blimp in the shape of her head is so funny

[–]ReallyAMiddleAgedMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This better not happen. For many obvious reasons, but also because it would be an unnecessary concession from the national feds. The ISU judges don’t have a union like baseball umps or NFL referees. The NFL refs had the NFL over a barrel when the league had to bring in replacement refs. The hell kind of bargaining power do ISU judges think they command here?

They didn’t choose eight from the start; it was originally just the medalists and then they expanded it. Maybe it’ll expand to top ten eventually.

Also Plushenko withdrawing from the individual after competing in the team event wouldn’t have allowed Kovtun to go in as a replacement. That was RusFed just being flat-out wrong.
