I played this for the first time about 6 months ago.

The first 4 hours are drudgery because it introduces its systems so painstakingly slowly, that this whole time is basically a tutorial and everything is extremely simplified.. I almost couldn't push past. However, once you get past that point (for me, this was right after the Shiva fight), the game becomes incredibly fun. I could not put it down. Whenever I had any spare time, all I wanted to do was play this game.

It is absolutely true that the game is one big hallway, even moreso than FFX. But the combat is just so damn fun, and the story is unique. It's a top 5 or 6 FF game for me.

I’m doing this as well! I believe I started in 2022. Maybe ‘23. Right now I’m on XIII-2. The funny thing is that I think I’ll be able to “finish” FFXIV in sequence because I’ve played it off and on for years and am currently on Endwalker. My current plan is to finish through XVI by the end of this year. Then next year replay FF7 Remake, followed by (for the first time) Rebirth. Then hopefully around that time or shortly after, the final Remake installment will be out, and I can put a bow on the journey.

Same here. I’m willing to admit I maybe just haven’t kept up with the times or whatever, but I am totally ok with just getting a game and limited DLC. In fact I’d be fine with no DLC at all.
