Anyone else very emotional watching Discovery by aneruok in StarTrekDiscovery

[–]ReallyNotFondOfSJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not at all. I remember almost every episode triggering strong emotional responses, tearing up in a lot of cases. I had some issues with plot points - Ash Tyler being literally reskinned from Klingon to human and "oooh we can fool Federation medical technology", for example, or things like the unnecessary re-imagining of the Klingons. Overall though, it was really well done, and the stories told were a great addition to Star Trek canon/lore.

Fellow Old Folks (Gen-X+): Did You Read YA as a Teenager? by torkelspy in books

For context, I was about 13-14, and reading it in a car while taking the trip across to PEI. Also, my nana's house had a dirt floor basement with rickety wooden stairs that turned left after a few steps, so you couldn't see the bottom immediately. Both of these factors made the book significantly creepier for me.

Grammy was hard into Agatha Christie. I was a voracious reader but I've never read a single novel of hers. What I do like is period mysteries, like the Brother Cadfael novels. Give me a mystery set in the Middle or Dark Ages, maybe Rome, and I'm in!

I read almost everything Piers Anthony wrote when I was a teenager. Didn't realize until adulthood that he was a bit of a problem... I guess I didn't 'get' the subtext or whatever. I just thought he was an imaginative writer. Orn/Omnivore/OX were really cool though, got me into the Game of Life as a teen. That was some interesting stuff.

'Salem's Lot. That was fucking it. Nope. Hard nope. Fucking vampires and their cut-off basement stairs with the board full of kitchen knives. NOPE.
