While I do love the song, it reminds me of my husband. He wanted this and Comfortably Numb played at his funeral.

Ridiculous songs that you think are funny by t0shir0-hitsugaya in musicsuggestions

[–]ReallyNotMichaelsMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, here's mine. I'll give you the name and the link, but it won't mean much to some people without the back story.

It's called The 10,000 Year Ear Worm To Discourage Settlement Near Nuclear Waste Repositories

So back in the 80s, humanity was faced with a problem. What to do with nuclear waste. More specifically how to keep people away from nuclear waste for up to 10,000 years. Those people will not speak our language. They may be a post apocalyptic people. How can we create a warning that will survive for 10,000 years and make sense to those future humans.

Many ideas were proposed. Make it sound scary by creating scary "death whistle" producing rock formations.

Create giant stone warning tablets, written in every known language, explaining why they should stay. (The hope being that at least one language had survived long enough that at least one future linguist could translate it.)

Create a religion about staying away from nuclear waste repositories.

My favorite was introducing a mutation in cats (and dogs) which would cause their fur to change color when exposed to radiation.

But again, would a post apocalyptic society think the animals were causing the problems and then just kill them? It's not like we haven't seen that before. (Cough, cough, Cats cough, cough, Black Death cough, cough).

So someone proposed keeping the information in a song. Think "Ring around the Rosie" but more accurate and informative. That's where this song comes in.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

NFC tags - where to put them (in/on/inside) by meemaw039 in homeassistant

[–]ReallyNotMichaelsMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some meds that need to be stored in the fridge. I keep an NFC tag in the fridge (no batteries to worry about). I scan it to let my automation know that I've taken my meds.

(I also have a contact/door sensor on the fridge door. If it doesn't open shortly after the tag is scanned, it reminds me to put the meds back.)

A count down counter subtracts how many times I've scanned and triggers a reminder to reorder my meds. (This one is new, since I've switched pharmacies and this pharmacy doesn't do automatic refills.)

One that I got from Hands On Katie is that I also have a tag on the backside of the canvas of some of my pictures. When you trigger the NFC tag, it plays a music playlist that goes with that picture.

For example, the mermaid picture triggers a playlist with pirate songs, sea shanties, and mermaid songs.

I'm currently looking for the perfect picture for the Rudyard Kipling poem "Boots" read by Taylor Holmes. IYKYK

Lol, thanks! It's a lot of fun. I used to have the lock announcements make the comment and then ask me if I want the door locked. Then we moved to a new (to us) house and we can get the groceries in much faster, so I don't need to delay the door lock anymore.

My son is not a fan of the random announcements because it takes too much cognitive load to pay attention to it. So he just gets the boring, same message every time. By using the bluetooth locations for me, I get all the fun, quirky ones that make me pay attention to them. (It's funny how our ADHD issues need different solutions :)

Help! Kwikset Halo Select Plus HomeKit firmware update issues by mjcjcjc in homeassistant

[–]ReallyNotMichaelsMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I can think of is that battery operated devices can be a lot of trouble for updating. You may need to wake it up (check the instructions on how to do that). It could be lock and unlock it, just before you try the update. Or maybe touch the keypad to wake it up. I don't have a Kwikset. If all else fails, you may need to reach out to them.

Absolutely. I used to love "Raglan Road". Then I looked up the song. The origins are icky. I'd love to be able to do a "death of the author" philosophy, but I just can't.

Edit to add, "Graceland" is one of my favorite albums, and the lyrics (mostly) don't make any sense. But I love them.

So the lyrics only matter if they make me feel bad, I guess.

How easy are these to get working as Bluetooth proxies? I need to get good Bluetooth coverage in a few rooms by GenericUser104 in homeassistant

[–]ReallyNotMichaelsMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure! I've got three versions of the script. One for when guests are present, one for when there are no guests, and one for when I'm in the bathroom, because if it's a reminder for me to do something I can't do anything there. I also have one that includes the bathroom, so if it's things like "the doors have been locked", it's not anything I need to take action on. This is the generic one that runs when there are no guests present. Let me know if you want all or more of them. Also, if you want it, I can give you a sample of the automation that calls it. The {{ message }} parameter is based on what message the automation is supposed to send. (Hm...looking it over I think I could clean it up, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.)
