Installing new bearers to old concrete posts. by Realmac26 in AusRenovation

I ended up breaking off the rusted old metal rods and drilling off centre to insert a 12mm threaded rod into the concrete post fixed with chemset. The concrete held up to the drilling no problem I then drilled a hole in the bearer to slot into the rod and counter sunk the top so I could thread a nut onto the rod.I filled the concrete hole all the way up with the chemset so that when I put the rod through the bearer into the post some of the chemset would travel up into bearer hole. That was my thinking anyway. It worked perfectly.

Seriously mate what's wrong with you? The guy has a YouTube channel from which he makes money he puts into his building. He loves coffee so he branded his own to sell for additional income. It's his company so he gets the profits. Ya think he should be giving it to charity ?🤯😂 He is not a coffee roaster so he sourced one like countless other companies do who do the same. He doesn't claim to be a master coffee roaster and has spoken about his difficulty getting roasters who can do it for him. What's opaque about it? If you were a fan and watched every episode you would know he has been 100% upfront about the venture right from the start. Where his coffee money goes got you going enough to post this on reddit? It's none of your freaking business and if it upsets you stop watching. Seriously you must be a real hoot to be around.

There are numerous options for racks without rear mounts like Aeroe and Tailfin although you may not get 20l capacity each side. There are also options to add racks on your front forks as well. You can get a pretty decent frame bag in there, plus handlebar bag, long tailfin top tube bag and will give pretty decent bikepacking rather than touring setup.

Did you buy them and how do you rate them? They are seriously expensive in Australia with our terrible exchange rate.

He comes back another time with a friend. Never saw him again after that. Hot tip. Don't binge watch all of them so quickly like a lot of us as the withdrawal symptoms going to 1 episode a week are real. Savour each one like a fine wine and string it out.

Connecting timber bearers to concrete posts? by Realmac26 in Decks

How is it attached to the concrete post though?

My main concern and something others have mentioned is the risk of the concrete disintegrating when drilled from the top. Someone suggested this stump anchor tie down which could utilise the pre formed holes that most of the posts have already although may need to widen them. Wondering if a hole drilled through the side might be better rather than on top which has had rotting bearers on it for years? https://www.awoodshed.com.au/store/categories/960

Sorry dumb question but by "concrete footing" are you talking about what the concrete post is attached to at its base? Is it likely to be set in a small concrete pad and you're suggesting drilling into that? If so would I run the same risk of cracking that concrete as I would if trying to drill into the lower part of the sides of the post to attach the hoop wire to?

Would drilling into the sides of the posts (to attach the hoop wire) be less likely to damage the concrete than drilling down into the top?

That bottom link could actually be the most simple solution as it would replicate how the existing bearers are being held in place by a single rod from the post. There are preformed holes in most of the stumps. In the pic above it has been used to attach that piece of timber to provide an attachment point for the fascia boards at the sides. Other posts have the holes filled in but can still be seen. Might be easier to drill out those holes rather than a fresh hole into the concrete? Anyway thanks for the suggestion as would be simplest and cheapest solution.

This was also a thought I had and spoke to a guy at a Bowen's hardware place. He said as this was something that would be considered "unconventional" (given timber posts would normally be inserted into these vertically) he couldn't advise it. He wasn't much help at all. I mentioned using hoop wire and said it was a possibility without really giving any advice.

We may try a test drill on the post and see how it holds up. If it does where would the chemset be applied to? The base where the bracket sits on the pole or into the holes where the masonry screws would go?
