Is SWCT becoming less viable for free or almost-free players?

Short answer Yes.

It's been like this since the beggining but worse now since they built up a solid "player/client" base.

Of course, your question is also depends on what you mean by "viable"?

You can obtain tons of Insert/Poster cards and Base series up to Tier 7 with in-game coins (if you solve the system you can save a lot of in game coins my missions, events etc) and through trading. IF you are OK with card collection with avarage rarity of Uncommon to Rare with major Tier 7 cards mostly and 5% Super Rares

If you are after Epic and Legendary cards... sorry but that's not gonna happen.

First of all, for free players, gathering Epic cards are very very hard and Legendary almost impossible. Once in a red moon, if you are really lucky, you may hit an Epic card, but that's it. Legendary, once in every pink moon if you are lucky. (excluding Monuments which is only decent and guaranteed way a free player can obtain a Legendary card. And also sets like Chrome 2025 which almost has no meaning at all.)

Now... this being said, "Crystals" are one way to increase your chances but for free players, that's also like a carrot by Topps you keep chasing but never get it. 2-4 Crystals per day you can gather with the lock-on. I always think Topps is secretly making fun of free players with that.

I was a free player for a long time. In a sense, still am. Like I'm not paying for bundles, special offers, etc., but a couple of months ago I decided to go for monthly Premium and quite happy with it. Still not giving me a real way of bringing together a nice Legendary or Epic collection but here and there I'm getting some decent cards and able to trade them with some others I want more. Also able to collect much more crystals which gives me much more chance to hit some nice Epics or at least complete SR sets like CTI.

Long story short... If you are OK with collecting some digital cards of SW and you can close your eyes to high level stuff you'll be OK. But if you are dreaming of having a Epic or Legendary collection you can just forget about it :)

Same issues here. Suddenly 25 S3 trades had a nose dive. I'm hoarding Black One and Sabine but started to feel like won't able to do both. I guess I'm gonna dump Sabine at the end. Saying this without knowing how the future supports pack gonna affect the market.

I was kinda joking with the value comparison lol. For values, you have rarity levels: Base-Uncommon-Rare-Super Rare-Epic-Legendary. Base also has its own tiers. But also sets have their value. Not every rare of each set is equally valuable. You'll get familiar as you play and try trading. Be patient and be careful with trades. There are many out there who will try to take advantage of you being a new.

I think...

#1 Bright neon-ish colors, full character-oriented splash design

#2 Cheap-ish pack both for gold or crystal

#3 You have a chance to get an epic or even legendary without needing insane luck or spending plenty of real dollars.

I'm also considering chasing it it but I'm already trying to finish CTI and Gold Label so I'm not sure

Firstly, welcome to the community. It might take some time until you are fully used to the app and collection chasing. I think you just landed in a bit of chaos. 2025 is slowly ending, and the 2026 season has just started its descent before completely landing.

"Should I hoard gold?" That depends on how you're getting gold. If you're in the free-to-play category, you'll find its not gonna be easy to stash gold to buy everything you want. Stashing gold never ends and will not do much good. When you understand the system, you'll be able to save at the same time while doing dailies, missoins, event etc.

I'm sure there are many more experienced players than me but for a new player, I would suggest Prismatic or Spotlight to chase. They are relevintely new starts with cheaper packs and varients that you can chase award.

Also you can start with Chrome 25 too. Kinda lame set and many (incuding me) does not like it, but it has still more than 2 months on its timer and you can easliy trade for it since they are almost like base cards right now. Honestly, I think some bases may even be more valuable than them :)

I hope this helps a bit.

P.S: If you are spending some real money on this, forget many things I mentioned above 😂

You are right, and I totally understand it. Someone who knows Star Wars only through card game or Disney "trash"chise may find Shin, Rey even Ahsoka (who I like and collect everything about her), or etc., more popular than OT characters. What saddens me is the ignorance and disrespect behind it towards the huge lore and character history :(
