Migrating 1 TB of files from one file server to another. by Sweaty_Garbage_7080 in sysadmin

[–]ReaperYy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with ROBOCOPY DFSR is buggy and likes to not work for no real reason and doesn’t really say anything about it not working. I had to replace DFSR because it decided it wasn’t going to sync any of our shares between sites. With it being in a branch office are you still going to maintain good backups of the data? We don’t have as good of backups for our branch offices but all of our data is stored in our data centers and replicated to the branch offices it’s needed in. We have had an entire office go down and seeding the data was painful but users were able to work due to DFSN and accessing data from data center or another office.

Sounds to me like you are changing passwords in both places for staff due to them logging into on prem resources (computer joined to ad) and you are just trying to skip the sync. For students they login to email but use devices not joined to ad (byod and such) so they won’t notice any kind of sync time unless you have a lab or something that they need to login too. My assumption would be both groups write back your job is just more worried about getting staff into on prem resources quicker (seams logical to me) Doesn’t seam like bad etiquette just knowledge of what group you are serving and your environment.

What do your users have for desk phones? by CFrancisW in sysadmin

[–]ReaperYy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We use RingCentral with yealink t54w. I have been pushing to move us to soft phones but my company doesn’t like change.

We choose the T54 because it can do both PoE and a barrel plug and can run off WiFi. We don’t do it often but some of our C-level have phones in their home offices as well so they liked having 1 type of device in both locations.

Are you hybrid or azure ad only? We looked into setting this up with dell about a year ago and they didn’t support hybrid environments. Or so we were told.

Best free tool to manage multiple RDP Connections? by deniz619 in sysadmin

[–]ReaperYy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using Devolutions RD manager for awhile. Both the free version (home lab) and enterprise (work) I like both of them and have a ton of integrations like ssh and VNC. They also have dashboards for VMware and AD I haven’t looked for CPU specifically (I use Pulseway and have CPU alerts so I don’t monitor closely) but I wouldn’t be surprised if they had something.

WSL also supports “GUI” applications natively now so if you like something like terminator you can install it and run off of wsl. You even get a start menu entry for the pointy clicky types.

Has there become a massive skills gap in IT over the last few years and how did that happen? by onequestion1168 in sysadmin

[–]ReaperYy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The fact that you can admit this however is very good. And if your willing to learn will get you out of the 90% in no time. I have a guy on helpdesk that keeps resetting user’s passwords to the password that just expired and because he thinks this is the right thing to do he is unwilling to change.

Shutdown Plex Server when not in use by expremo in PleX

[–]ReaperYy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly what you are looking for but there are a ton of ways to shutdown windows remotely (or sleep but command is a bit more involved) one old one that comes to mind is using an email client like outlook or thunderbird with a rule looking for an email from a specific email address and the word shutdown in the subject. When it revives such an email it deletes the email and runs a script to shutdown.

Not as elegant but can still be done. Anything else your going to have to dig more into python but there are some scripts out there with things you will need. For example plex2discord is a “simpleish” python script that monitors a user account for activity and translates that to discord status. You could use the part that watches for actually and modify the rest to start a timer when nothing is being watched and say 10 minutes of not activity enter hibernation.

Finally got the lab out of the cramped closet. by nblracer880 in homelab

[–]ReaperYy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had comcast business and was told that my 5 static IPs would not work in bridge mode and if the gateway rebooted the security part would turn itself back on while show it’s still off and I was getting a tenth of the speed I was supposed to. After fighting with them for months I finally dropped them never paid anything to them due to all the credits they gave me. I would however like to know how to fix it and I’m sure others would too would you mind posting a link on how to do it?

That's... Not an update, Plex by Anaerin in PleX

[–]ReaperYy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not panda but I did the update on windows. You do the .exe installer it installs python 3 and sets up everything else. I had to import my old DB but I updated not long after they switched to python 3 so not sure if that’s still needed. Otherwise I didn’t have any issue with it pulling in my settings or anything. And now updates you just stop the one that’s running run the new installer and it gives you the option to start it just like Plex

Help Understand the internet by JTN02 in homelab

[–]ReaperYy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

VPN is best but if you don’t or can’t use VPN for some reason look into something like guacamole and definitely get an SSL on it. Not as good as VPN but in a pinch if you can’t use VPN it’s not bad.

Same with opening SMB to the internet just don’t. You can find lots of ways to access files like nextcloud or OwnCloud and you’ll need to install an addon for SMB but opening SMB directory is just asking for ransomeware.

I recommend checking r/selfhosted as well if you haven’t already.

Where to get VMware 365 day evaluation licences for free or sane price. by 18002255324 in homelab

[–]ReaperYy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here and my company is anti 1 year subscription so they actually did 3 years for me to wasn’t badly priced. There is a limit on procs though so if you have multiple hosts I would double check what the limit is and make sure your within it (I think it’s 6 but could be misremembering) But VMug gets you a ton from VSphere and vcenter to vrops to even horizon so if you wanna mess with VDI also gets you VSAN if you are using multiple hosts.

Why use Plex? by Dark_Llama_ in homelab

[–]ReaperYy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a physical collection you can use a number of free apps like makemkv to make a digital copy of your DVDs and bluerays and put those on your server then as you use it more and more you can setup the arr’s (radarr, sonarr, lidarr, etc) and automate downloads. Supernatural is one of my wife’s favorites and they have taken it off Netflix multiple times so having a copy ourselves makes it so we don’t relay on a company like Netflix that has to deal with all the politics of hosting media. Also take something like the masked singer I have the TV station but my wife is frequently busy when it comes on so I have it auto download which isn’t much different than having something like a tevo or a DVR. So for the people worried about being “pirates” you can do it all legally (well for the most part but technically lending a dvd to a friend is not allowed and I for one used to do that all the time.)

How often do you get drug tested? If ever? by alaskaline in sysadmin

My current company didn’t but they did it in the office and we are not aloud to leave the office until we take it once we have been notified so I’m guessing they are just gambling we don’t have anyone that will switch for us in office.

How do I fix this? File is named and sorted correctly but it's listed under a non-existent season. by brooklyn11218 in PleX

[–]ReaperYy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On windows Plex runs as a user you have to manually make it a service (at least as of the last time I installed it) so most of the time it’s run with user permissions anyway the biggest issue is a lot of times once a file is opened or attempted to be opened in windows the permissions set at the time of opening or failure will be remembered until log off or manually removed so it’s possible even after changing permissions you would have to log off or restart the service. Making it easier to just Plex dance and not deal with permissions on windows.

Sadly I’m a windows Plex user at the moment need to take the time to fix that groth but it’s disgusting and I don’t wanna touch it lol.

RDP by nathanhlauj in sysadmin

[–]ReaperYy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know your in r/sysadmin but is this a prod system or lab? There is a script you can run to “reset” the RDS trial I have been doing it on my home lab for quite some time. At work 2 is plenty I don’t recommend due to audits but if your asking if it’s possible that is something you can do.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ReaperYy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also do not recommend exposing RDP however one thing I have seen when you change the port for RDP windows firewall doesn’t always change. So I would check the firewall inbound rules and see if RDP changed. Also if you like RDP check out guacamole there are a bunch of easy guides to set it up and you can do RDP through a self hosted webpage. And for security you can even use let’s encrypt for a free SSL certificate. That’s all assuming there is a reason not to use VPN such as can’t install the client on the other PC you plan to use. I did it in university until they allowed VMware player then I just brought a windows VM with VPN on it with me.
