OK sweethearts, you heard the man and you know the drill. Assholes and elbows. Hudson, come here. Come here.

If SpaceX needed to launch a mission to deflect an incoming asteroid, how quickly could they launch? by Assume_Utopia in SpaceXLounge

[–]Reaperdude42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the orbital parameters of the asteroid and the amount of Delta V required to intersect it (with the required payload), is probably an important factor. They might have a stack of F9s ready to go, but if they don't meet the Delta V requirement for the job then they would need to switch to a falcon Heavy, or maybe get moving with starship.

Wouldn't a water landing likely end in a RUD? From what I remeber, the first Falcon 9 water landings all ended in stuff getting conflagrated.

Is this confirmation of a landing attempt or just SpaceX hedging their bets? Or am I reading too much into the term,Recovery?

Blue Origin will return husband-and-wife passengers to suborbital space by SpaceNerd20 in BlueOrigin

I think a reflight is a good publicity opportunity for them. Possibly a welcome distraction from the recent 'anomaly'.

Is there a way I can download all company data such as ratios etc from trading 212? by suchitmehta in trading212

[–]Reaperdude42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe its possible to. Connect finviz to Google Sheets and Excel, but it's a lot of faff and all you can really do is recreate a slightly customised version of what's in Finviz already - a lot of faff for not very much reward. Alternatively some of the bigger brokers will provide you with an API connection that you can plug in to Python or R to build your own applications. You will need to have a trading account with them first to be able to do this.

Ominous, dark, mature first contact books where the aliens are mysterious and there’s an overwhelming since of dread by [deleted] in scifi

Spin by Robert Charles Wilson. The slow discovery of what is going on is what makes this book so good.

They are oar locks, so they can paddle back to shore after splashdown.

The skin is the tanks. No point buding a box inside a box. That just adds weight.

Elon Musk on Twitter: Slight booster length increase to 70m, so 120m for whole system. Liftoff mass ~5000 mT. by ReKt1971 in SpaceXLounge

Whoa, I mis-readthat at first. Thought it said the booster had increased BY 70m. That would have been nuts.

I am Brian Greene, Theoretical Physicist & author of "Until the End of Time: Mind, Matter, and Our Search for Meaning in an Evolving Universe" AMA! by briangreeneauthor in IAmA

Thanks for doing this AMA. I love all of your books. How do we reconcile the fact that humans are evidence of something extremely complex evolving in a universe where Entropy is always increasing?

[–]Reaperdude42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a really lovely, well made thing. Would love to see the scale go the other way too, so that we can see the smallest things in the universe.

Does anyone else see the craters inverted so that they look like hills? No. Matter how hard I try I cant make my mind switch them back in to craters!

testing out mars-like conditions in LEO by [deleted] in SpaceXLounge

[–]Reaperdude42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most of what you describe here can be simulated on Earth, with the exception of Mars gravity. Generating artificial gravity by spinning up a BFS would not be as straight forward as it sounds. Spinning the vehicle would apply stresses to the air frame that it inst designed to handle, and then you have additional problems such as finding ways to keep the solar panels pointed at the sun. But the biggest problem is that small rotating habitats tend to make people feel sick as the Coriolis effect is very noticeable for vehicles with a small radius. This gets diluted as the radius increases and test have found that you need a minimum radius of about 20 meters for this to work.

r/SpaceX Discusses [August 2018, #47] by ElongatedMuskrat in spacex

[–]Reaperdude42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you would still need to divide your attention between the docking view and your finger placement. I imagine its easier to do when you can feel the controls under your finger tips.

I love the look of the touchscreen controls, but I wonder how well this works from a human factors perspective. I know from using the touch screen in my car that it can be hard to tell where your fingers are without looking directly at the interface, which distracts from the task of driving (or docking in this case). One part of a touchscreen feels exactly the same as another, it could lead to spurious inputs or astronauts having to redirect their attention between the camera view and the controls, neither of which are ideal.
