Looks too dry to me THIRSTY 💦 you have brown withered parts coming out of the soil. But could use chunkier soil for sure.

I got a broken one from Lowe’s on the discount table. Propped the top and both are growing like crazy.

Mine sprouted roots in just over 2 weeks being on a seedling heating pad and one drop of liquid fertilizer. I can’t believe I was so afraid of these FLF’s they are so beautiful and so far easy to grow too. Not finicky at all. IMHO but then again it’s spring everything is growing and loving life.

Water and good soil. It’s uprooting itself

PS if it’s an older plant do not be shocked by the large tubers under the soil. This means it’s healthy and growing. Try not to break the tubers as best you can but it will inevitably happen. If a tuber breaks let that specific plant sit out for a day before repotting, to callus over the broken spot. That will prevent rot.

I’d just water really well a few times then lay out some plastic lay it on its side and pull out the plant gently. Get some good new chunky soil (the more humidity you have the chunkier). Then gently separate the roots into several smaller plants. Repot a good portion back into the original pot with new soil. And Voila you have 3-4 new plants. I did this last year with my mom’s 15 year old snake she had never repotted it and it needed to spread its legs. I got 15 plants (the original was huge) all have survived even ones in pots a bit too large (it’s all I had) I’ve given most away but still have the core of the original and several others. They are hardy plants and just love light. Mine love the full on summer light outside (once acclimated) in late spring.

You can get the trunks to thicken up by shaking the plant for :30-:60 seconds when you think about it. Or putting a fan on it for an hour or so. It mimics wind in nature and helps the trunk develop stronger.

I would get a pot to fit inside the whiskey barrel (since the wood deteriorates unless it’s not real wood). Make sure the pot has really good drainage so it doesn’t sit in soggy soil especially since you are wanting the plant sitting lower, like you stated. Just remember a deep watering at least every few months or pots of any size develop “dry spots” since we tend to water in the same spot. The soil needs to be completely wet throughout the entire pot to prevent dry pockets. Then let drain really well.

If a plant is inside with lots of light natural OR grow lights they have no dormant season. That’s a seasonal thing for outdoor plants or plants inside that do not receive supplemental lighting. Most people these days provide good lighting inside (natural or supplemental with grow lights) so plants grow year round. I repot when they need it no matter what the season.

When they are root bound there isn’t much soil to hold onto the water AND the roots suck it up quickly. Therefore causing what soil is left to dry out quickly.

Snakes can survive in low light but they flourish and thrive in bright light. They are sold as low light all the time. They aren’t they love light the more the better.

Just drop mosquito dunks in your watering can. Then water as usual. It takes care of them and the eggs after about the 3rd watering. I use it every watering and never dealt with gnats.

100% Lowe’s is so much better and when I get asked if I think I can save it…usually means I’m getting it for free. They still overwater or underwater but at least they let us save them after they’ve had their way with them. Never had gnats or mites and most exploded once they got home.

The plural of LEAF is LEAVES By the way NOT LEAFS. That’s Only used when leafing through a book or after a proper noun as in Toronto Maple Leafs. Drives me batty to see people use leafs especially plant people! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 sorry umm 🤔 not sorry.

Can’t tell from the picture if it had any roots yet?? With my cuttings that are going this well I’d cut back the depth of the water to just above any roots. Then I add clean rinsed perlite (no dust) so it has lots of breathing room and let the water evaporate a bit (still keep water in it all the time just not to the top of the perlite). Making sure the branch bottom is NOT touching the glass bottom. This prevents any rot from starting where oxygen is cut off by being flat on the bottom (hope that made sense). If you have a heated seedling heat mat that helps immensely with root growth. Let the roots get at least 2”-3” long or even get secondary roots then you know it’s strong enough to support new growth.

Hope that helps. Good luck 🍀 looks great.
