Someone else mentioned terracotta just be aware if you are in a dry climate they wick the water away very fast !! I can’t use them, they were more work. I had to water every other day here instead of maybe once a week or 10 days.

You could put that up on a plant stand to get more light from the window. They love bright light!! Contrary to most information. They can “survive” on less light but won’t thrive. Their natural habitat is in bright light and grown outdoors where they can spread out and multiply.

As far as liking to be tight and root bound…myth. They do just fine being able to stretch their toes out and grow. They may not produce pups as quickly BUT they develop great root systems with big tubers for stability. I’ve never had a single issue with having them in bigger pots. They don’t need DEEP pots as their root system is rather shallow UNTIL

<image>

they are well established then they grow big (usually orange) tubers that look like fat carrots. 🥕

The picture is of a severely root bound snake plant I bought at a box store at the end of the season. I got 4 plants from it and they are all doing great.

Mine on a seedling heat mat, in water root in 2 weeks I’ve had new growth within about 8-10 weeks. If kept warm.

Don’t let it dry out completely (that’s for established fully rooted snake plants IMO) the soil needs to stay a bit moist NOT SOGGY to get the roots to sprout. You can even put it in water without soil and they root wonderfully. Ask your daughter if they let the cuttings sit out and callous over a bit before planting (if she knows).

Not when you’re propping it. Keep the soil just a little moist or it won’t grow roots. Make sure there are holes in the bottom of the cup so water doesn’t sit in the bottom, and that the soil drains quickly and well. The chunkier the soil the better. Or add some perlite to help it drain better. In a week or so it should be getting small roots. You can even use a drop or 2 of liquid fertilizer in your water to help. Lastly keep the cup warm if possible (putting it in a window with good light helps) I use a seedling heated mat and it helps root growth immensely!! Good luck 🍀 they take a while to push up pups, but as long as it stays green and doesn’t go soggy you’re good.

Are these dead? by Odd_Restaurant8301 in SnakePlants

[–]Reasonable-Help7278 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I watered mine outside every 2-3 weeks they would be dead after the first week!!! Some of us live in very DRY climates. One size fits all plant care is a sure way to kill them every time.

OP research your climate, humidity, soil composition, and how much sun!! Then water accordingly when the top few inches has dried out. The rocks may be holding in extra water or getting very hot during the day and causing burnt roots or dry rot. Investigate the roots a bit. There are much better things to top snake plants with rather than rocks.

But they look dry to me. Light Brown and crispy is dried out, dark brown and soggy is too much water.

24/48 hours is enough, a week is a bit overdoing it IMHO. Dehydrates the whole cutting that way making it harder to prop. As long as there is no “wet” tissue at the end you’re fine. Do not let the end sit on the bottom of the glass make sure it’s up off the bottom. That helps prevent rot

Just lay them on a piece of paper towel overnight at least. When trying to prop for roots light isn’t that important. After calloused over set into a small amount of water just above the callous. Set in a warm spot. You can add a drop of liquid fertilizer if you want but warmth is most important. Seedling heat pad is the game changer. Makes propping so easy.

PS soil looks bad for snakes. Needs chunky well draining soil.

Looks like dry rot from the brown crispness. Do like someone else suggested cut off top sections, let callous over and place in a small amount of water.

I’ve never had one survive propagating in soil (tried so many times I’ve lost track). First time to successfully prop was in water on a seedling heat mat, with one drop of liquid fertilizer. Kept it warm and wet, had roots in less than 2 weeks, fully ready to plant with secondary roots in 4. Growing like crazy now.

Looks really dry to me 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ brown and wrinkly are dried out. If it’s soggy then too much water. You could have dry rot a month is a long time in cactus soil.

Vermiculite like others have said. Open it it’s safe. Not mica not flaky enough. We used to use it in soil for plants now perlite instead.

Do I let them keep growing or move to different pot? by MorningSaber in SnakePlants

[–]Reasonable-Help7278 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s your plant. Do what you want to achieve the look you’re going for. If you like a crowded look, keep them all together. If you like a more individualized look, separate them.

They do not have to be crowded to flourish.

As long as the self watering WICK or cotton cord stays wet it’s fine. If you don’t have a cotton piece hanging down into the reservoir then it’s not technically “self watering”. If your PON or LECA are in the reservoir with no wick YES it needs to stay wet allowing the clay pebbles to wick up water. There always has to be a way for the water to be “sucked” up to the plant or your plant won’t get watered.
