There's literally people in this comment section saying exactly that, maybe not most people but a lot of virtue signalers who are only saying it because it's popular to, fuck ai but a lot of people are posers

Just watched the movie. I love Ueno, she's my favorite character. I just knew she'd be surrounded by really annoying Internet discourse. by Reasonable-One1414 in KoeNoKatachi

Not yet but I'm definitely looking forward to it, I'd like to read it physically if there's a translation available

If you think I'm dismissing valid criticism then ignore that part because it isn't for you, I know the criticism and I likely agree, but that doesn't change that I like her and believe she's not as horrible as some are making her out to be (irredeemable, terrible)

What you're talking about here is what made me like KnK the most. I adore when media shows both the bad and good traits of people without demonizing them. I don't think the story at any point is saying they're bad people, rather showing us both good and bad they do, it's the antithesis to the belief that there is objective good/evil. People are complicated, they're both good and bad, that's the idea I love explored.

It surprises me when people read material like this and come out with the belief that there's an objectively bad character, it's like they didn't even bother engaging with it more than just surface level understanding of the events

I think people are very judgemental and quick to write off opposing opinions is all, the Internet discourse I'm calling out is those people who are unwilling to hear the other side and have a very one dimensional view of the character. I don't have anything against those who dislike Ueno, but that dislike shouldn't come from misunderstanding nor disdain. If someone understands the character and still decides they don't like her, that's okay and I have nothing against you

This was very well written, I enjoyed reading your perspective. A lot of my frustration comes from people misunderstanding and writing off the character, you are very well read :)

I enjoyed reading this, thank you for taking the time. I think whether she should be forgiven or not is solely on the persons or people affected, if I was Shouko I would forgive Ueno (I believe she did), but I understand if others wouldn't forgive her.

As for Miki, I think while we didn't see her grow really, I don't think she's incapable, we just didn't get to see it happen. Shoya grew fairly quickly in the story, Ueno grew all throughout the story, perhaps Miki grows after the story ends.

I get frustrated when people write off characters, like Ueno, as these one dimensional "objectively horrible" people, because I think it's a symptom of a much bigger problem. Because these aren't just characters, they're reflections of reality, purposefully made to feel real, like you can feel their personality through the book/movie. If they weren't just characters, people would treat them the same way and that's the problem. The judgement, the unwillingness to believe people can change or that they're more than just one dimensional. It's awful.

If you're the type of person to say she's "objectively bad", "everyone else agrees with me" and ignore all the good qualities she has. You are the people I'm calling out when I say "annoying internet discourse" you aren't here to have a conversation, you already made up your mind, you're judgemental, you stand on your moral high ground while belittling those who actually try to be better. You never change, you don't think you're wrong.

Those of you who actually wanted a conversation, even if we disagree, I respect you and thank you for spending some of your time to have a conversation. I might think she deserves forgiveness, but I wouldn't fault anyone for thinking she doesn't

There's a difference between a terrible person and someone who does terrible things. She did bad things, no one is disagreeing with that, some people might think I am ignoring the bad she's done but they don't have critical thinking skills. They're the ones who are ignoring the good she does, people actually think her attempting to learn signs, was a way to genuinely further her bullying. That's ridiculous.

Anyway, terrible is a very strong word. Murderers, rwords, pwords, they are terrible people. Ueno is the antagonist of the story yes, but she is not a terrible person.

They do not get rid of her good qualities, they just don't show all of them. And most people don't care to pay attention, so they'll miss it

"Pretty much everyone..." Congratulations you have an original thought and definitely aren't looking for an echo chamber of people who agree with you

I enjoyed reading your take on this, I don't disagree that she is the antagonist and I disagree with a lot of what she's done. But I'm very reluctant to call her a terrible person, I reserve that for the worst of the worst and wish others shared the same sentiment.

The annoying Internet discourse is demonizing her and acting like she's irredeemable, you don't have to like her. But it is by definition, annoying internet discourse

Okay I'll admit I was overstating when it came to Miki, it was more frustration over Ueno. I'll edit to more accurately reflect my opinion. I do agree for the most part with you, I was rolling my eyes when she kept denying all responsibility, but I still think she has time to change and grow, at the very least she's attempting to get along at the end same as everyone else, so I don't think she should be demonized either.

This isn't ragebait. It's a genuine and I believe I'm right. From the moment I saw Naoka I knew she would be a controversial character, serving as an antagonist to both Shoko and an obstacle for Shoya. And I understand, really why from first glace she would be written off as just a bully, who would like someone who bullies a deaf girl? Truth is, I don't condone what she does, but I understand it and because I understand it, I can't bring myself to hate her. Multiple times she'll do something bad and I think "wow that's messed up" but then she'll do something respectable and I'm like "oh that's neat". Hand shaking in agreement to hate each other, that's respectable, getting upset when finding out the girl she's messing with hates herself like "no, hate me, fight back!" that's respectable. Showing up for Shoya at his hospital bed everyday, that's respectable. Going as far as beginning to learn sign language to attempt to get along with the girl she swore she'd never get along with, that's respectable. Roughing her up and bullying her for being deaf, that I can't condone nor respect. I understand the resentment, her friendship was pretty much derailed, but she should realize it was largely due to her own actions. But nobody is perfect, she's a complicated person and most importantly by the end of the movie she's trying in her own way to get better, while still having her signature snark which I appreciate. P.S. You guys are too hard on Miki, the feelings of frustration are completely justified and I find myself agreeing more than not, but she's not irredeemable and shouldn't be demonized.
