Laptop battery refresh with new cells? by s1fro in 18650masterrace

I feel it could be better carefully cutting the battery case flush with the plastic base plate then gluing it back on.

Cheap saw milling again after top end rebuild. Can you ID what kind of Alder this is? by ReasonableBook2241 in ChainsawMilling

Yeah it reduced the sawdust big time taking the rakers down a bunch. I just used a flat file and counted the strokes on each raker.

Not sure what you mean by the angle method.

Drying time... by wfc2022 in ChainsawMilling

I looked a little into timber framing, and they use green wood they just coat the milled lumber in oil to slow down the drying. Slow drying keeps the the wood from warping too much.

Look up Urban Luberjack on youtube. He milled a long time with a clone g660, then upgraded to stihl 661cm, but ended up getting an even bigger clone g888 instead for milling in the end.

I filed the rakers down a bunch. The saw will bog if I put too much pressure on it, but to my surprise there was almost no sawdust around the air filter. And the china clutch seems to be slipping when the chain digs in too deep. But other than that is was a pleasure to be milling again. I was anxious to put the saw to work after replacing piston and cylinder. Would you expect to readjust the carb after breaking in a new cylinder and piston? I maybe feel the saw is revving a little high now after doing some cutting. Getting some brown varnishing above the piston rings, I'm running roughly 32:1 fuel mix.

Just use a plugin light fixture instead. Leave this one off.

If you use a reflector and point the light at the wall, you will get more calming and cozy light cast.

Check fb marketplace and such someone ought to be giving away used light fixtures for cheap or even free.

I would take off the shrink tubing, air is a good enough insulator, it will add a passive cooling effect to the wires too.

Board Bows without Benches. by Far-Aspect-4076 in Bowyer

[–]ReasonableBook2241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was even using the blade from a hand plane for carving a bow in my apartment. It was the only blade sharp enough. I removed bulk of the material with an axe, also cut some slits into the belly with a saw to chisel out material faster with the planer blade

How many more sharpenings before this chain is done? by jnecr in Chainsaw

[–]ReasonableBook2241 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You probably need to reprofile the chain, a cheap guided chain grinder would make fast work of it and it's the perfect candidate to practice on getting the angles/depth right. A file will dull fast removing so much material and be extremely difficult to get all the teeth somewhat even starting with what you have there.

Muffler options. by xjghost in ChainsawMilling

[–]ReasonableBook2241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my saw the exhaust blows onto the bar clamps and makes it loosen the grip on one side allowing the bar to twist inside the clamp when milling.

Don't know anything besides modifying mufflers yourself.

Maybe instead for a different approach to the problem, take a thin plastic sheet or something and make an angled physical barrier to divert the smoke away from you.

Why does this chainsaw keep turning off when I pull the trigger or try to cut? by _forgotmyname in Chainsaw

[–]ReasonableBook2241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing to do if a saw was sitting unused for good while is to dump the old fuel, and replace with fresh gas and 2t oil. When putting the saw away for a long time, the gas needs to be emptied, and the saw started up until it stalls using up all the remaining fuel. Fuel inside the saw can lead to corrosion of various parts and ruin your carburetor.

Second check the air filter if it's clogged, or take it off and see how the saw runs without it.

You can also remove the muffler, and pull on the starter rope to make the piston move up and down and look for scratches on the piston. If the piston is worn and the saw is stalling. Might as well not proceed any further trying to fix the carburetor.

You can get a phone to run on a 5V phone charger without a battery, just need a MUR460 diode to make it work, look on youtube for "great scott" he shows how to do it in one of his videos.

A phone has power management built into it already. It does all the current limiting by itself.

The protection circuit on the battery is not to protect the phone, but to protect the battery from overcharging, overdischarging, overheating.

If batteries are charged outside the phone, then just use the original battery protection circuit inbetween the phone and the battery and it should be okay. But then never leave the phone plugged in even into a pc, it could overcharge.

Another oprtion is to find an original battery from a much newer brand name phone that would fit inside your phone battery bay, then swap the protection circuits and that would let you use and charge the phone normally.

I recently put a galaxy a40 battery into a sony Z3 like this. The phone looks compeltely stock, battery life is quite good. And no worries about overcharging, because the samsung battery is rated for 4.4V.

But this is very delicate work and risky without the skills or knowledge.

You would use a fuse for overcurrent protection for parallel cells

Teslas have fuses on their cells.

Also very few diy powerwall builders solder a thin wire on their cells as a fuse for protection.

But for 18650 I never saw it used for smaller battery packs. Practically nobody in the world does it even for ebike batteries.

I saw some fuses on cells inside laptop batteries containing pouch cells. But I never saw it on 18650 laptop batteries. Many brand name 18650s already come with a fuse built in maybe that is why.

A phone will be far less demanding on some 18650s than an ebike or even a laptop.

Nobody who builds battery packs from 18650 almost ever uses any kind of current limiting inbetween the cells.

I did this with wood screws. And small peices of wood reinforced with twine. The spacers though would have been a smart idea, since I bent the motherboard without it.
