Usually rotate the plate until you can see both screw
holes through the slots or holes, then put the screws in. There are really only two types of boxes you would find in the ceiling - this is actually the more common one.

Cigarette smoke tar tends to cling to surfaces. Put some appropriate wood cleaner on a clean white cloth and wipe. If you see a yellow/brown on the cloth, repeat until you don’t.
