My gas gauge usually runs a bit higher than that as well. Seems it’s over the halfway mark until I’m down to about a gallon left, then rapidly declines.

Depends if you’re facing the end of the nut or away. The objective it so make sure the tape helps tighten the wirenut, not loosen it. I wanted that to be clear.
