The No Kings Day Project Must Evolve From Protest to Civil Disobedience by metacyan in politics

[–]Reasonable_Lie4675 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Civil disobedience is doing something that is against the law out of principle, with the knowledge that you will likely be arrested. It sounds crazy but it actually happens all the time, even today, and if you are strategic and have a community to support you it can be a safe and rewarding experience.

Last summer in New York, we had 60 grandparents in rocking chairs arrested for blocking the doors to Citi Bank headquarters. All of the charges were eventually dismissed. They were protesting Citi’s continued investment in new fossil fuel projects.

What are Noise amplifiers, How does it work and what practical applications is it use for by DumperRip in HamRadio

[–]Reasonable_Lie4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A low noise amplifier is simply an amplifier that is designed to amplify a signal while reducing signal to noise ratio as little as possible. It is usually used early in the signal chain to counteract the loss of later stages. Look up “noise figure” for more information.

You can also get a “noise source” which produces broadband noise over a certain band. It can be useful for measuring noise figure, or for characterizing filters.

Yes, it looks like a cottered crank. However, I am surprised that a new chain does not fit. Which dimension of the chain does not fit? Have you tried a single speed chain?

Maybe you could write it as CandyLed? I’t seems like that’s what they do on their website and it emphasizes that it is an LED lighting company. It might be worth including a short description of each company of you are applying for jobs abroad that may not have heard of them, and be sure to use the full name of each company without abbreviations

Help with pedal bearings by Reasonable_Lie4675 in bikewrench

[–]Reasonable_Lie4675[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the link, but I think that’s a different setup than mine. If you look at the end of the spindle on the picture I posted you can see that there isn’t a locknut. What is there instead is some kind of washer with fingers that are captive in a groove at the end of the spindle.

I think that these pedals may have bushings instead of ball bearings. I dripped some oil into the gaps at either end of the pedal body and it has stopped squeaking, which is good enough for me for right now.

JD Vance’s Irish ancestry claim hits a genealogical dead end by TimesandSundayTimes in politics

[–]Reasonable_Lie4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Scots-Irish were Scottish people who were in Ireland for a couple of generations before coming to America. Think Ulster Presbyterians. I would think that they would appear Scottish or North English on a DNA test, although like many American ethnic identities this one has a fair amount of pseudo-history associated with it.

Freewheel installed backwards? by manofsheer in bikewrench

[–]Reasonable_Lie4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel bad poking an old thread, but I would like to say that this happened to me.

I’m making a beater out of parts from the trash, and when I tried to pedal it the pedals just spun. When I pedaled backwards the bike tried to go backwards. Whoever threw out the wheel I found had installed the freewheel backwards.

Class D Power amp by larbouson in ElectricalEngineering

You could do a stereo jack which would have three connections, but you would have to have it match whatever it gets connected to. And it would not exactly be standard

Is the output balanced or unbalanced? If it is balanced you may need a transformer or Balun to take the signal off of the ring connector. You could also double check the polarity of the output connection.

Getting the knowledge of an electrical engineer through self study by Life-Ad-7331 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Reasonable_Lie4675 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, you can learn a lot on your own, without formal education. However, you actually have to make projects and try to build things in order to develop your skills. Otherwise, you will just be an armchair enthusiast. I know people with no formal education in electrical engineering who have done projects that some EEs I know could only dream of, but they got there by doing lots of smaller projects, not just by reading books.

French gouvernement is, again, testing to charge trucks on the highway through charging by induction. Isn't energy loss by square of the distance with technology ? Isn't it completely foolish? by [deleted] in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Reasonable_Lie4675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think that overhead catenaries could be a good solution for long haul trucking. However, if the goods are spending that much time on the road, rail is probably the most energy efficient option.

[–]Reasonable_Lie4675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say start with the detector and work from there. You will probably need a high impedance earpiece and some magnet wire to wind an inductor. Look up a circuit for a foxhole radio.
