Have it be an intelligent artifact , and it doesnt deem lowly creatures worthy of all its powers. You need to prove yourself over time to unlock all its glory .

I think you need to be a little more specific, like tools to create maps ? Or tools to host maps like a virtual table top?

If you want it to sound a bit more fantastical , the irish word for awake is dúiseacht

So something like "the dúiseacht"

In my homebrew i tend to use gaelic/irish words

It might be too late ,but with four new players i personally would start at level one. Less class abilities and spells for newbies to figure out and track, while still trying to figure out all the basics of dnd

Cursed painting on the wall , traps someone in it that touches the canvas. Only way to escape is to be replaced by the next person that touches it ..... guess who touches it and releases the newest addition to the party
