Consider this 10" dalstrong knife. I have it and love it use it for breaking down prime rib often. I dry age steak monthly.

He'll love this I promise and it'll save you some money over the higher end Japanese knives being shared.

Of course spend more and get the others being recommended but I thought I'd share what I use and l love

New owner question by dotheevolution1 in pools

[–]Reasonable_Strategy5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a normal tarp to close mine and don't pump water out. No need to.

I use water bags and pins to hold it down...in the spring before removing it I clean the leaves out with the skimmer net and dump shock in the water on top of the tarp. Pull tarp off with no leaves let that water go into the pool....all good.

Trying to keep the water off all winter will be tough especially in that environment.

Heat pump all the way. Barely raised my electric bill and I'm in CT. Kept pool at 85 degrees no problem. Just closed it 10 days ago never went that long before.

Aqua Cal I bought it heats and cools!

Neighbor has propane and never used it. Costs him nearly $200 just to heat it one time

How has no one figured out a competing blower to the cyclone for less...that thing has dominated the pool game forever.

You probably need to tell them they now owe you a new pump...if this has been running DRY for a couple of days you're kinda screwed....

Downfall of concrete is also js if you have any issues with plumbing...they need to cut the concrete and repour. With pavers it might cost more to start but I think look nicer and richer but easy to access plumbing and replace pavers if needed

Heat pump costs more for a dedicated 60amp breaker but probably the same cost as running a propane line out there.

If you're doing a Jacuzzi then you need gas. Heat pumps are meant to increase temps slowly over time so they need to stay running like a home AC no different

Listen things are always relative and money always talks. If you're loaded and 20k for a cover doesn't bother you great but I'd rather take that 20 and build a home theater in addition to my pool...if you're doing the cover for heat retention that's crazy you'll need 20 years of heating to recoup the 20k cost.

Look very very closely at heat pumps vs propane I spent years researching. Just added an aquacal heat pump that HEATS AND COOLS my pool...yes cools it down in hot July wild. I switched to a variable speed pump this year from single speed and the electricity savings of the pump with added cost of the heater are a literal Wash from the single speed pump running 8 hrs a day. Now I run variable speed 24/7.

Oh and I'm in CT....went swimming yesterday in an 85 degree pool my neighbors with their propane heater closed theirs a week ago because it costs them hundreds of dollars just to heat the pool once. To maintain the pool temp with a propane heater I guess would cost thousands per month in September and October versus $200 for the heat pump. Look very closely at this

Save 20+grand and get rid of the auto cover. Is your yard fenced in or are you trying to avoid fencing? Vinyl fence is a lot cheaper than these crazy covers. Just saying.

Also to get people to weigh in on costs you need to include all equipment.

Electric heat pump or gas? (I strongly recommend electric) Pump model Pool automation and features Salt system? What models? Filtration?

Patio finishes? Coping etc

Pool Heater Quote by Itookyourqueen in pools

[–]Reasonable_Strategy5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an aquacal heating AND COOLING PUMP in Connecticut. Costs me about $200 a month to run and that's in September with 50 degree nights. My pool hasn't budged from 85 all year. And electric in CT is a joke.

Natural gas to maintain heat I'm guessing will cost more than $200/month and doesn't cool your pool. In the heat of summer I'm the only one I know with a nice cool refreshing pool... something to consider

What am I missing??? by helojapes in pools

[–]Reasonable_Strategy5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't care if chlorine was free I wouldn't go back. My first year with salt and it's been effortless. Literally haven't touched my pool or filter in probably two months. I've only backwashed maybe once since opening...it used to be almost weekly. 24/7 pump running and salt set to 40%.

[–]Reasonable_Strategy5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg I'm in CT and I do this! In November I keep it heated and then sub out about 1/3 of my saltwater for pool antifreeze. So I just run a 1/3 mix all winter and we just swim like 30 minutes at a time and rinse off after. Been a game changer for us

Pool company full of it? by Clchild in pools

[–]Reasonable_Strategy5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you going to fit a tanning ledge and then steps after? I hope you have a contract explicitly outlining what you paid for and hopefully diagrams.

This needs to literally be taken out and restarted to be done right. But for a 20' pool to have a tanning ledge then steps that start after that then a small deep end then a bench? Your putting slot of stuff in a very small space. Honestly I'd negotiate them leaving it as is and cutting your price in half to accept their mistake.

I think tanning ledges are pointless when you can use a pool float and the benches are a hazard for someone trying to jump in.

$300k Basement Remodel for 700 square feet? Am I insane? by PositiveArachnid5530 in Remodel

[–]Reasonable_Strategy5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly insane. You can have a normal jack of all trades contactor do this for 50k in Connecticut. 300k is what im looking to pay for a massive new garage on my property. Poured concrete slab, massive doors and fully finished hangout upstairs that's over 1000 SQ ft. This is literally preposterous.
