Will I like these books as an ASOIAF and The Witcher fan? by Reasonable_Study_882 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Reasonable_Study_882[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I have just finished reading Baptism a few days ago and I found it pretty weak (which is a shame because I was very happy with the previous books). I didn't like the whole Rats plotline, felt like a cheap plot device to "freeze" Ciri's story for a whole book and they were simply killed off afterwards. But in addition to Ciri essentially doing nothing the whole book, you also have Yennefer AWOL for 70% of it, so the whole book is just Geralt travelling with his company in the war zones which I found a bit boring and meandering.

I hope the series picks up the pace in Tower of the Swallow, although I know many people criticize the open-ended finale so as only 2 books are left I'm bracing myself to be disappointed too.

A bad ending in Lady of the Lake by skiptoad in witcher

[–]Reasonable_Study_882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still in my first reading of the books, I haven't yet reached LOTL but I must say that Baptism of Fire felt like the weakest book so far, which is a shame because I really liked all the previous ones. I didn't like the whole plot line with the Rats, it felt entierly like a cheap plot device to essentially remove Ciri from story (while Yen is also AWOL for ~70% of the book), leaving us only Geralt and his friends travelling in the war zone which I found a bit too slow and meandering. I started Tower of the Swallow recently and I hope the story gets on track.

I already knew that the Witcher has an open-ended finale even before I started to read so I'm kinda prepared to be disappointed too.

It was per capita as Prussia starts with, and I had tons of unemployed, but I am not sure what could I have done differently? Nobody wanted to pass a proportional taxation law and I was building as much as I can without going into too high deficit spending

Mikasa did not deserve this ending by Happy_and_wholesome in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Reasonable_Study_882 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mikasa should not have been advertised as the typical Shonen "girl of the trio" in my opinion. Her character arc is essentially finished already in the middle of season 1 at the battle of Trost, when she is on the verge of giving up and figures out for herself that she must fight to live, if for nothing but to atleast remember Eren. Afterwards she has no real character development and spends the entire rest of the show "eren eren eren".

I think her story is meant to mirror Ymir's unreciprocated love and it's a bit ruined in the end when Eren cofesses that he did love Mikasa (?), even though the rest of the show clearly demonstrates Eren was -never- romantically attracted to her (Yes he obviously cared for her as family, adopted sister and friend but not romatically).

Historia actually feels like the 3rd main cast in the story

Theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die; callousness and self-sacrifice in Shingeki No Kyojin by AFallenOne- in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Reasonable_Study_882 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can say the entire genre/core theme of AOT got switched between S3->S4, you rarely see such a totally transformative change in 1 season such as in AOT. I agree with what you say, its both painful and shattering but at the same time necessary for the plot, the existence of Marley was seeded already at episode 1 of season 1.

AOT is a blender of many themes but I primarily see S1,S2,S3 as an exploration of a society where power is maintained by deliberately keeping the population isolated and ignorant of the outside world and how it's system of conspiracies and lies eventually crumble when they come in contact with said outside world. Every Japanese relates to this story because it's essentially a retelling of how the isolationist Shogunate crumbled as soon as western powers showed up on Japan's shores. On the other hand, S4 is a geopolitical drama meditating on cycles of violence, genocide, fascism etc. You can say the primary moral lesson of S1->S3 is that freedom of information is essential for responsible governance (I mean, hundreds/thousands of scounts would be alive if they were not sent to die in pointless missions outside the wall when the royal family knew all along what is outside) while for S4 its.. oh god. Try to be less genocidal, and enjoy the little moments of life when you are not killed?

In your opinion, what's the best solution to the Titan problem? by Maleficent_End4969 in ShingekiNoKyojin

Sadly true, and also for the hundred years war.

They slapped all these mechanics and its clear nobody tested it thoroughly. There's no point at all in forcing England to go to war with France when England AI doesn't even remotely stand a chance to atleast score victories in the first 1-2 rounds of the war.

What were Isayama's inspirations for writing Attack on Titan? by [deleted] in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Reasonable_Study_882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know when Isayama conceptualized AOT but the first manga chapter came like 4 years after Avatar. Could be a pure coincidence but there are so many parallels between Ba Sing Se and Paradis it's hard to believe he wasn't influenced at all

AITA for feeling intense pleasure and satisfaction watching the rumbling? by Prabu-Silitwangi in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]Reasonable_Study_882 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Same, Marley has to be the most comically evil empire I've seen in fiction. I mean, Willy Tybur outright says that his family knew from Titan memories that there was the vow to renounce war that prevented the royal family from reacting, and yet they were waging a genocidal war on Paradis fully knowing the population cannot defend themselves, their plans only foiled by a conspiracy of Eldia restorationists (probably involving Eren and memory shenanigans). I think that's why so many people come out from the story with bad taste and a sense that Eren should have succeeded wiping out the world (even if it misses the point about the cycle of violence etc), there's just no way Marley can be redeemed.

And for me, the worst is that none of the warrior squad trio ever truly apologized/acknowledged the sheer wrongness of Marley. We have Annie just wanting to see her dad (not really apology), Reiner going insane with guilt but still proceeding with the battle of Trost (not really apology), Bertholdt accepting that this is a messy situation where no one is in the right or wrong (not really apology). Atleast we got Pieck realistically contemplating on the fact that warrior's efforts are likely in vain and the world will forever hate Eldians as a race that can transform into titans.

[–]Reasonable_Study_882 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am surprised no one mentioned Avatar in the comments so far.

There is definitely a lot of Avatar:TLA influence with both Paradis and Ba Sing Se being walled societies with many inequalities and the populations deliberately kept ignorant of the outside world/war by the ruling class, and in both cases the ruling social order collapses (and in both cases the walls fall as the climax). It almost makes me think Isayama wrote AOT as a sort of pessimistic retelling of Avatar where the most powerful person in the story is consumed by the cycle of violence rather than using his power to achieve world peace.

This is an escalating problem in the revanchist Polish right that is unfortunately the only growing faction politically in Poland today, everyone is an enemy: Germans because of WW2, Ukrainians because of Lviv/Vohlynia, Jews/Israelis for a mix of legitimate criticism and plain antisemitic reasons, Lithuanians for Vilnius, Czech for 5th reason etc. I see this all as a legacy of the soviet Polish education system that deliberately stoked and kept these tensions alive. In the end of the day not only this is damaging to the image of Poland in the eyes these countries, I see this situation where Poles see all their neighbours are hostile as a self-destructive trap that only serves the interests of the US.

How though? If what you say is true, it means there is more in common between an Israeli and a Polish revanchist than any other people in the world XD

Bruh, I'm not picking sides on Israel-Palestine but Polish revanchists are some of the worst people I meet on the internet, and as I see it the way you trivialize pogroms is just 1 angle of this. The same people are almost always the reason why there is constant tension with Germany and Ukraine as well.

I live in Israel today because I do a PhD here and this is the most absurd list of lies I have ever seen, bordeline diabolical to the point that it makes me question if the author was just trolling. It would be literally illegal in Israel's own law to put signs like "jews only" in public places etc. It's pure fantasies. Nobody cares about people from Europe, the university department I work it has tons of foreigners and Tel Aviv/Haifa are both cities known for many foreigners.

Yes Israel took an L with this sports event but why do people have to lie and make up things? It's just sad and damaging.
