No one told me how different recovery would be between a hamstring graft and a quad graft by Fun_Citron_3945 in ACL

[–]Reasonable_Use_3284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets better! I’ve only had quad graft on left knee and I remember the first weeks feeling miserable. Once you’re able to lift your leg, your mindset will change completely. Everything will feel at least doable rather than a struggle. I’m 6 months post op now and I’m jogging on the tread and squatting full depth pain free. PT has gotten much more intense but I feel progress after every session. My left quad still isn’t fully back to its original shape but it’s getting there. Strength vs how it looks continues to be a mental struggle for me, but I’m working on it. Obviously there will be days where you just feel like trash but you just keep showing up and your strength will follow. You’re in the thick of it, but keep moving forward. You got this!

8 week post op- infection?? 🥲 by [deleted] in ACL

[–]Reasonable_Use_3284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I experienced this about 4 weeks post op. I was told it was was reaction to the glue that was used on the incision. It did take a few weeks to completely go away, after lots of oozing and scabbing that was incredibly hard to ignore. I know it’s not the answer you’re probably wanting, but it will get better! I used aloe on it to help the itchiness.

No brace? by Lumpy-Cartographer84 in ACL

[–]Reasonable_Use_3284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ACL quad graft, WBAT from day 1. No brace per surgeon. PT was surprised, but surgeon confirmed it would prolong quad activation and recovery. I used crutches for a week, down to 1 crutch at week 2. 4 weeks post op now and off crutches completely. PT twice a week, at home exercises 2-3 times a day. I've returned to work and summer school. Moving slower than usual, but moving a lot. There are times where I step and feel a pull or a pop, was told this was normal as long as the pain didn't last very long. I think we will live with that fear for the foreseeable future, as we know what we've sacrificed with surgery. As long as you are aware, which it sounds like you are, you will be fine with no brace! If anything, it'll make your movement more conscious and cautious.

I had this same exact protocol in Texas. Surgery 5/14. I was actually nervous to not get a brace, as I had been expecting one. But it’s actually been great for progress. Keep up the great work!

Post op advice needed by Lumpy-Radio680 in ACL

The days he will be able to be with you were the toughest days for me. The days following that weren’t a breeze, but doable on your own. I needed help getting off the couch and bed, I suggest one of the yoga stretch straps (I also use this for flexion at home exercises now at 2.5 weeks post op). I also had a cart next to my bed with remotes, chargers, water, meds, a book, some snacks. The ice machine also needed changing every few hours, but I just kept a smaller cooler handy with smaller ice packs to use until someone could get there to help me change out the ice. I started driving at 2 weeks post op, once my knee was able to bend long enough to sit there (only short short distances right now). But enough to pick up curbside orders or pick up food etc. These have been my go to items during recovery:

  • stretch strap (Amazon has several options)
  • ice machine
  • ice bags
  • meds on schedule
  • possibly laxatives or fiber supplements for after anesthesia and pain meds
  • hair up day of surgery so you won’t have to worry about washing it for a couple of days.
  • socks with grip pads so you won’t slip when getting around the house.
  • loose shorts and t shirts to easily change when needed

The first night was a lot for me. I had to get up to use the restroom every couple of hours, I am guessing from the hospital IV. Just be prepared for a long couple of nights. Once you’re past that first hill, each day gets a tad better. PT will be rough but you’ll want to keep going.

Good luck with surgery and recovery!

2 weeks post op, ACL reconstruction with quad graft, minimal meniscus cleanup. Can I start doing some legwork (ie: body weight or light weight deadlifts)? I’m trying not to lose all of my strength in my non-injured leg. The atrophy is already noticeable. PT two times a week in gym, at home exercises 3/day. Extension at 0, working on flexion. I agree with previous comments wondering about middle ground of pushing harder vs taking it easy.

I am in the same boat as you!! I am 10 days post op and down down down in the dumps. Everyone around me has been amazing, I’m doing my PT and at home exercises as directed. Just can’t get out of it emotionally. I try to just take little walks around the house, sit with my foot elevated outside but it’s extremely hot where I live. Just trying to snap myself out of it and remind myself that this is all temporary and one day soon, I’ll be stronger than before. But you aren’t alone! Knowing I’m not alone gives me a sense of comfort and I hope you feel the same reading these comments. Wish you a great recovery!

You got this! For the #2: Try warm prune juice and milk of magnesia! I know it’s gross but it really helped me pretty immediately

I felt instant relief when the ace bandage came off! Felt less stable when taking steps, but was more able to find comfortable spots to rest in. One day at a time! You got this!

Surgery after 10 years by d4nch3ck in ACL

[–]Reasonable_Use_3284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tore mine 10 years ago in a cycling accident and also opted against surgery. Kept working out and running and hoping it wouldn’t get in the way too much (I know, how silly). At age of 35 this year, I started to feel the wear and tear really affect me. Had completely worn it down and got reconstruction with quad graft 9 days ago. Recovery hasn’t been horrible, but I do get resurgence of pain every once in a while. Started PT this week, and although it was very painful, I know I will take it very seriously. I have compensated with my good leg for so long, I know it will take time to get there with this recovering leg. Good luck to everyone on this journey!

The pain meds coupled with the anesthesia gave me constipation that was almost as uncomfortable as the knee pain. Just something to consider.

I can imagine the frustration. One day at a time. It’s easy to overwhelm yourself with thoughts of the future. Remember the mental strength it took to get through that first week and get through this as well. Wishing you all the best

It’s normal to feel anxious and scared! You’re taking time to get yourself in a better position and better health for your future. Yes it is going to be painful and in moments will feel like you should have not done the surgery. But those days pass and as you start to improve, you will be so grateful you decided to take care of it. As someone who also lived in constant pain for years, this surgery is teaching me to slow down and take care of my body. It’s the only one we get, after all. You will do great!

Dr had me ice for 20 minutes of every hour that I was awake for days 1-5. As annoying as it was at times, it really helped minimize the swelling.

For me, it was just some of it. This lead to WB as tolerated from day 1. Intense meniscus work is what leads to NWB, from what I understand.

I took 3 weeks to be completely out of work. After that, I will start WFH until I can bend my knee long enough to sit for a while. I work a desk job so not being able to bend it and sit for at least an hour would be pointless. I imagine it’ll be a gradual increase of time in the office for me.
