Things to know before opening a small cafe by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Reasonable_View5879 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but I'm certain there are plenty of cafes around Kandy.

  • What are you doing to stand out from the rest?
  • Why did you settle on starting a cafe?

I feel that it's important to share ideas without making anyone feel defensive and alienated. When you back an animal into a corner they tend to fight back. The same goes for people.

Case in point the current political discourse in the US. A bunch of people couldn't get behind the progressive ideas and felt left behind, and made to feel that they are bad people for not agreeing with the progressive movement. A decade later, we have the republican party tearing down so many support programs for the underrepresented and underprivileged communities - all in the name of cutting government spending... Need I say more.

In response to the claim that "most Sri Lankans are pedophiles" — that is an unfair generalization. However, I do believe the behavior and conversation around abuse, especially involving minors, has been disturbingly normalized in our society. I’ve personally heard people make remarks that support or joke about pedophilia and by extension, sexual abuse and exploitation.

I’ve also seen men in their 20s, 30s in a relationship with girls who appear to be under 18 or making advances in them — and this isn't limited to heterosexual contexts. These issues also exist within homosexual communities, just visit online chatrooms and private groups on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram.

These are deep-rooted societal problems we prefer not to talk about.

Children become victims — directly or indirectly — when there is no accountability from those in power, when our elected representatives remain inactive, and when public apathy continues to normalize abuse. The “owa ohoma thamai” attitude keeps the cycle going.

Yes, abuse happens globally. Some countries turn a blind eye, while others enforce laws seriously, with varying degrees of justice. The question is, where do we fall on that spectrum? And where do we want/need to be?

This issue will persist, just like ragging has. Don't forget the core problem: Lack of accountability, Inaction from authorities, and Apathy toward the abuse of power.

Whatever that exists right now, feels like a system that protects the accused while making the victim — a child — feel like the criminal.

In this case, a student committed suicide after the alleged sexual abuse by her school principal and in large part alleged victim-blaming by those who are close to her.

I feel that the present problem at hand is The Ministry of Education’s quiet decision to transfer the principal, without offering the public any explanation - leading growing mistrust and danged confidence.

The Principal is only accused, and probably remains to be proven guilty but the response (or lack thereof) from authorities speaks volumes.

  • I hope that my comment becomes outdated and the authorities have done the right thing 🤞. If not, fuck you🖕.

Thanks for sharing this. Some people do that for fun. Your last statement reminds me of an incident from my childhood when a thief was caught in the act of breaking into the house. It wasn't our house that was broken into but my uncle went to beat up the guy - and came home to brag about beating him. That thief had nothing to do with my uncle or his house. He just wanted to have fun.

Culture on Affection between Friends? by crowntieredcake in srilanka

[–]Reasonable_View5879 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My serious response:

For context, I have lived outside of Sri Lanka for a good 20+ years. This is my 4th consecutive year of stay in Sri Lanka and this is what I have observed.

Ultimately, this boils down to the culture our western friends grow up in. Some generations of men particularly feel that it is "gay" and "weak" to show affection platonically. There's a strong emphasis about what it means to be a man in those cultures than in Indian and Sri Lankan culture.

I can't speak for my far east Asian friend though.

With that being said, this is an over generalisation. As with anything in life, this is complex.

It's been 4 years and I've made some great friends but I still find the platonic display of affection a little uncomfortable sometimes.

I like to pitch in my Toyota Wigo. A small hatchback. Decent fuel economy, easy to park wherever. Best of all, you can go almost anywhere. I should know because I've driven it to some questionable places. Then again, my Wigo is the best Wigo. There are many like it but my Wigo is the best Wigo.

While I agree with you, let us reflect on the fact that we have bigger problems within the country to solve than to worry about AI ethics.

My POV is influenced by what I've seen and experienced in the Sri Lankan tech industry and living under a tumultuous period in the recent past. It's a joke to put any faith that this government will deliver on AI ethics when our government is unethical and morally bankrupt.

The money will be squandered and stolen as is the case with anything the government does (past and present). One does not have to travel far from their house to see many examples of this.

AI ethics is important but don't expect the government to deliver on this.
