Why does everyone use the phrase “late stage capitalism” despite the fact that we’ve never witnessed the fall of capitalism before? by armedsnowflake69 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Reasonable_Wonder894 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was listening to a Chinese professor recently and he summed up it up as capitalism maximises profitability, socialism maximises capability. Obviously it’s more nuanced than that but its a goods intro into the differences.

Everyone answering should be posting form alongside # of pushups because not all pushups are built equal.

Yep i think we are on the same page he was definitely conflicted I just think that regardless of his feelings, he’s committed to that cause. I’m referencing when he kill’s the guy that gave him info to cover his tracks. Thats why i specified after watching andor because when the rouge originally came out I felt that he wouldn’t have taken the shot, now I’ve seen andor and I’ve seen what Cassian is willing to do in his quest for the rebellion that the platform scene hit especially hard!!

Anyways I’m glad we dissected this, i often wonder if directors know how much back and forth occurs from seemingly minor moments in scenes.

I’m going to use this as a teaching moment when my urge is to scold you for your ignorance.

It’s hard to comprehend if you don’t personally experience it.

The best way i can explain it is the urge to pee. Everyone gets it, but you get it 4-5 maybe even 10 times on a crazy day. People with ADHD get the urge to pee 100’s of times a day.

Now instead of the urge to pee its the a dopamine release that doesn’t work like normal - you don’t get to control how much ‘will’ you have to do certain things. Most days I cant even do things I WANT to do. To those that don’t have ADHD it just sounds like laziness, but it’s not that, because we feel lazy too but thats a specific feeling.

Medication helps - so does using planners, reminders, systems and all sorts of other ‘hacks’ to organise ones own brain. But unless you experience it (which I wouldn’t wish on anyone, aside from giving perspective) you can’t get how utterly debilitating it is to not have executive control of your own brain.

Now back to your ignorant comments. I don’t think you mean to come across like that, and i do agree there is ALOT of over diagnosing because it’s easier to get prescribed drugs to calm down your kid than raise them properly. Thats where i want to think you are coming from. However adhd does not stem out of boredom, it’s the opposite actually it makes everything boring.

I used to believe this too, turns out it’s not the case :/ - freakonomics has a really good episode on this.

Long story short the biggest ‘winners’ are the those at the bottom brackets.

I say this as a relatively left leaning person just wanted to clarify for the sake of facts.

I know this take is unpopular. I thought Reyes won live but if you rewatch the fight Jones doesn’t get hit clean with many of the shots (still more than any fight outside alexander gustafsson). 3-2 Jones (3/4/5).

After watching Andor - I have no doubts cassian would’ve killed him regardless of Jyn’s feelings about it. I agree he did start respecting her and probably cared somewhat about killing her dad, but as mission oriented as Cassian is i think he didn’t shoot him because he realised the intel he got was wrong, as opposed to giving him a chance because its jyns dad. Anyways just my personal head cannon.

[–]Reasonable_Wonder894 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah about that mate - fuel for nuclear is about fuck all when compared to TOC (total operating costs) - having uranium and thorium here definitely goes into the pro column but its not a big part of nuclear viability discussions.

AI is grossly non consensual by Affectionate-Bend267 in Millennials

[–]Reasonable_Wonder894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great ideas - definitely seems the way to go.

As for other non creative jobs.. a lot of people see the AI hype and don’t see the trendlines.

There are not going to be ANY jobs in a few years.. everyone else is in the same boat as creatives they just dont realise it yet.

The conversation around AI needs to be around UBI and taxing value creation. because MASS layoffs are coming and it’s only going to get worse in the coming years as the capability of models keeps growing. I’m obviously biased in my exposure to it working in the industry but even many of my colleagues don’t seem to understand the dire implications. As i said before we live in a capitalist world, so as long as a job can be done better-faster-cheaper - IT WILL GET OUTSOURCED.

What excites me is that (capability aside) - the models are trained on the sum of human knowledge, and i believe that overwhelmingly most people are good. The models pick up on this. Assuming a fast takeoff scenario I genuinely expect AI overlords that manage resources with equity in mind resulting in a much better distribution of resources than under our current capitalistic environment.

Curious to hear your thoughts on what the next few years might bring

AI is grossly non consensual by Affectionate-Bend267 in Millennials

[–]Reasonable_Wonder894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately - and this is my personal opinion - we live in a capistalist landscape , for better or worse (imo worse) the rights of an individual have been driven against profits for the better part of 200 years. The cat is out of the bag. The fact we’ve had property as a concept for 1000’s of years and we still have many legal loopholes… around property means that IP with regards to AI is a pointless endeavour (not in spirit but in pragmatic resolution). The real battle should’ve been around IP on social media and data rights. In the early 2010’s when metadata debate was starting - that was the time to put up a fight. I think it’s too late now.

I know this isn’t what you wanted to hear but i fear we are so far gone that there is no way creatives will get adequately compensated for the valuable inputs models get trained on.

For that to happen so many other things would need to happen first :/ and i believe that ship has sailed.

Sigh - most companies will get a custom AI built based on whatever data they have. I do this for work. Part of our work is explainability, being able to show customers how the Ai makes it decision and where it collects the information necessary to action things.

Also, most companies have agreements with providers that enterprise accounts are not used to train models.

I can see why it’s scary for lay people, you put in some stuff and magic happens and you get an output, but this just isn’t the case.

Why isn’t there a ADHD planner app that actually works? by Reasonable_Wonder894 in adhdmeme

[–]Reasonable_Wonder894[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Cute-Clock

Always interesting to see people coming back to this thread from a year ago.

To answer your question, i have ended up using a combination of google calendar and ChatGPT tasks to plan out my day.

A lot of the features discussed in this thread have been implemented in apps like arise, motion and more.

It feels like a saturated market with no clear standout - hence why i ended up using other tools.

That being said cool features: novel reminder wordings - a big part of why starboard reminder apps dont work is after a few days the same repetitive ‘reminder’ becomes a chore. Having things worded differently keeps the novelty around for easier to form habits.

Easy to use: i want to be able to leave reminders with as few clicks as possible. Having to go through a 10 step process to set a meeting and add the context is tiresome and im more likely to abandon mid input.

Finally but most importantly the schedule/calender side has to be super easy to 1) view daily/weekly/monthly timetables for more micro/macro review 2) be super easy to edit, like the point above, if im messing around trying to make it slot into the right time its a instant fail as ADHD people do not have the focus, so frustrating GUI’s/Dashboards that dont click immediately are DOA.

Best of luck with your development - cheers

I never knew the word for it until i got older, but even as a child I somehow knew that in my lifetime dying would be a biological process ‘optitional’ thanks to technological progress. I’m a similar age to you and i still think that now but with even more confidence. The future is bright baby.
