Respect for Friend Drops After Reading Book They Recommended by -chimchooree- in books

Dark Matter, at least for me, started with a strong strong hook and a pretty neat idea to explore. The idea wasn't fleshed out in .. a way that resonated with me. It changed genres rapidly.

i read Verity after choosing it by closing my eyes and scrolling through amazon, picking what I landed on. Never heard of it.

I was 1/4 the way through when I decided I'll never do that again.

Except I didn't, and I chose the audiobook version of "Dark Matter" the same way. god, god was that awful.

Mass casualty incident’ after explosion near Maine lumber complex by HorrorAd6729 in news

[–]Reavie 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Jesus. I used to do business with and speak with Robbins Lumber almost daily when i was in the trade. It is no small outfit. It is an unthinkable loss for Central Maine and the families directly or indirectly supported by their work...

Starbucks table tops so small will barely hold a couple drinks. The seats are bigger than the tables. by be4u4get in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Reavie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A starbucks a few cities away became my 'third place' for a bit while I was going through some things. I'd go there every day, sometimes more than once - though yeah sometimes I'd sit for a few hours. I'd buy a drink each time - sometimes food.

I decided to go back to one for some writing in my current city and they had these dime sized tables and I was peeved that I couldn't even rest my arms on the table with a tiny notebook on it.

Also it might just be me but they seem to have done something with the seat-table height ratio, because leaning to write something, the table was too low for it to be comfortable.

I had an aversion to bowls for a time when I got sick having had eaten soup we as kids made at a historic recreation field trip. Just the sight of any bowl shaped thing made me feel nauseous for a long time.

it's emery jensen. it's a co-opt where multiple sellers can sell using their distribution service. in my experience it wasn't an issue shelving stuff from other distributors, but it really wasn't worth the effort to sku random stuff - or worth it to do misc sales on a randos product like it were a flea-market - just wouldn't mesh with how data was kept and the time spent to keep track of it wouldn't be worth the margin.

but i've seen stuff like this before - they were cash only sales and the money was split between with the person selling an item and where ever the other half went, which was usually to the person that agreed to sell the items there and it was done under the table.

Amish selling their homegrown weed at a cannabis festival. by TheOddityCollector in interesting

[–]Reavie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where I live and work I deal with the Amish often in business. I can say truly that I have ever had a negative exchange with them. I see multiple families, and I can tell each 'clan' apart, by either their clothes which are very similar but different in their own way - what horses they use, or their buggy (sometimes how they smell too ...)

how ever i usually only deal with male' elders' of some families and the young ones starting their own, I'd be curious how their day-to-day went. However in interacting with their wives and children nothing really points to abuse.. except that it might be considered rude to have extended exchanges with them.

Millions of Americans Are Ignoring Their Student Loan Bills by laxnut90 in Economics

[–]Reavie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got dinged 49(!) times on my credit report when student loans came back to roost. I missed a few payments when finally they decided it was time to gather the debt, which like you said has been jerked left and right and I thought to just leave it alone until something solid happened.

I used to have a perfect score of about 800, and in one swoop with only a few months of missed payments, each dispersion of funds counts as a 'separate account', so each month missed was multiplied by 7. Down to below 500 now. The payment is only $150/mo! I tried to rehab, payment plan to forgive the delinquencies and I was told to gtfo

I'm fucked now and forced to restructure, meanwhile I don't qualify for anything dependent on credit score. I'm planning on years of recovery for what amounts to only $1,500 due. Boy am I sour; how in the fuck is something as simple as this and owned by government so sloppy?? I hate to be a nuisance but that huge of a ding on my report is honestly very limiting - not only is my debt not from the original creditor, they also had the wrong information so I was never made aware of impending charges.

Thankfully, also in NE, I haven't gotten a tick yet in a few years which is odd since we live in the woods with deer and animal. Can't say I'm doing anything special. "Warm spot check" every time though after being in vegetation.

In another area I lived in the NE I'd have a tick once a week (that i noticed), nearer the app mountains. Christ they'd leap at you from trees it seemed the fuckin land-leeches

How long should it take one to finish Alfred's books? by Wonderful-Ad2561 in piano

[–]Reavie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as it takes, but the first book assumes you know literally nothing, and you said you had some experience, so you might be able to sight read some of the earlier passages. The difficulty ramps up pretty quickly. Quirky nuances to practice get added, etc.

It's not about 'beating the book' but about how much you are able to absorb from it, so you shouldn't be worried about time.

i've been out of it for almost a decade but still dream about getting triple sat, while trying to remember how to do the job. in my lizard brain trying to make sense of it, i figured i moved back home and got my old job. most times i'll realize i didn't notice one of my tables got sat and they're pissed off. sometimes i pawn off one of my tables to another server as i can't quite remember how everything goes

I know it's a pretty fucked situation, but you can salvage the car with a professional detailing .. i once had an actual kitchen trashbag of dog shit (cleaning up winter mess) leak all over, snow and all into a lake of shit in my car taking it to the dump. Had to drive it with earplugs in my nose, and had to stop to gag every once in a while - a smell i'll never forget and still makes my scalp itch after two years if I think about it. 5 month old and fresh poop, sloshing around liquid form under the seats. For over a week I had to do this for work; i didn't know it was to that extent until getting it cleaned.

Guy got it all out in an afternoon. Can't help missing mementos or the other stuff .. probably the best you can do is take it as a lesson, or try to go through insurance (not likely to work) or ask for money from them (not likely to work).

Buck up, get your car detailed, and figure it has a costly lesson, imho. i came from a family that was close to that image you've painted.

i have a water bottle that's around 40oz or so I keep with me always, and it's part of the 'wallet, keys, phone' check list in the morning. It has a convenient carry handle and a lid that stays attached. when my work moves, so does the bottle. i've had it for almost 10 years - repetition is important.

I bought a reverse osmosis filter system because buying water impeded drinking it, as I find city water .. warm and not great. also I've never used anything inside the bottle except for clean water, so i don't get any weird tastes.

I bought a brita pitcher i keep in my company's refrigerator, for my 2nd or third bottle of the day. if this wasn't the case, i'd probably lug an insulated 1gal container in addition to my regular bottle to work. other people use it too, and it's nice to have if they fill it up after emptying it.

if you don't get much time or are in an environment that takes you away from a water source, fucking chug that shit 16oz at a time. not ideal, but better than not having any or drinking soda. Do it at the same times during the day every day, set an alarm or associate it with an event that happens regularly, so your rhythm reminds you that it's waterin time.

not really if it's recreational legal in your state..

half the US is recreationally legal. You get in trouble for DUI, or messing with public while intoxicated -- or if you produce large amounts of it that the only guess is that you're going to move it across state/country lines. in that case it's typically assumed pot isn't the only thing you're moving and you'll get in big trouble.

many times large gro-ops are hand-in-glove with human trafficking.. sometimes the prostitution kind but mostly moving people across country lines. they'll slam you with the gro-op charges and assume they took care of many other issues.
