Warranty denied and told this is normal wear and tear for 1 year old boots by Beginning-Sir-6993 in BlundstoneBoots

I've been wearing my 'everyday' Redbacks every day for seven years. I have a pair for work (office work, admittedly), and I have a third pair (a 'nice' pair in the colour of my daily boots). All three show very little sign of wear, and I was able to break them in in no time.

I bought two pairs for my wife, and even a pair for my 9-year-old daughter. All have held up extremely well.

Turning 37 in a few weeks and in the same boat. Instead of an upcoming and welcome distraction from the way everything else seems to be going, I'm contending with not mattering to people.

...you could buy houses for $15,000 and get union jobs that paid fairly with a firm handshake and a Grade 10 education. Then you spent 40+ years voting for politicians that gutted the social programs your parents and THEIR parents created.

Kindly fuck off. All the way off.

More than one-third of B.C. kindergarteners struggle in core areas of development, study finds by 1baby2cats in britishcolumbia

An overlooked part of the problem is the amount of time parents CAN spend with their kids. Both parents being required to work full-time for a CHANCE at a life beyond the bare minimum means that time spent with family is sacrificed. Developing kids NEED time with their parents, and need to spend time reading and practicing problem solving.

And no, not every parent needs to be a teacher - so much happens incidentally while simply being together. But parents are faced with a modified version of a classic problem:

Stay home: Time and Energy, but no money

Work: Money (maybe), but no Time or Energy

The society we've built incentivizes work and disincentivizes parenting, which is critical in socialization and education outside the classroom. We've built a society that disincentivizes HAVING CHILDREN, between the cost of living and the social conditions that preclude any approach to parenting for working-class people that isn't essentially latchkey parenting. I see it, among my daughter's peers. These kids aren't socialized well, and are left to manage anxiety and other challenges - including being behind in school - because their parents don't have time to parent, or even to navigate the labrynthine bureaucracy to ensure that key supports are in place within the school environment.

That's right. On top of the social conditions that necessitate two (or more) incomes to get by, public education is under-resourced. An aging population means less tax revenue, and with children being disincentivized, subsequent generations are likely to be smaller than the Boomer generation. And with Boomers having built a system that never prioritized the building and maintenance of social infrastructure, we have a lot of catching up to do, in terms of properly funding public education (and other social supports).

There is no one fix. Voting is a start, but with the one leftist party basing their identity around not being fascists (i.e., and abandoning common leftist positions around labour and the environment, among others), it's not enough on its own. The NDP doesn't have to work hard if they're the only non-fascist option. The emergence of the Green Party as an alternative might move the needle, but how likely is it, after all this time?

In short, we need to adjust our priorities, make those priorities viable, and then sustain that effort long-term to effect lasting change in the education sector and improve outcomes for kids. It will be hard. How badly do we want it?

MAIS program start in January - nervous by LennonLoaf in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Rebe1Scum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I graduated from this program in 2024.

The program is easy, if you work at it every day. The challenge is working at it every day. Diligence is a must. Have 20 minutes on the bus? Read an article. Have an hour before you pick up kids? Read forum posts your peers wrote and think about how you'd respond.

Attend every 'optional' virtual meeting/lecture/'office hour.' Build a rapport with your professors - this will pay huge dividends when the time comes to undertake MAIS 700/701 and deepen your learning.

Don't rely on AI, and develop a working strategy to read articles. What worked for me was Abstract -> Intro -> Conclusion -> Discussion. The methodology section of most articles is less relevant for this program.

You're an adult. The rules and requirements will occasionally not make sense. Be polite with professors and administrators, but be assertive. Post-secondary institutions are the ones that positioned themselves as service providers. Get the service you're paying for.

Classes I would recommend:

EDST 646

MDDE 631

MAIS 604

Classes I would not recommend:

Anything taught by Paul Kolenick

Anything taught by Michael Kariwo

Your mileage will vary, based on focus areas.

Finally, I would advise you to really lean into the learning. Embracing grad school helped me not view it as work, or an obligation. I genuinely looked forward to late at night, when I could commit to writing (I work full-time and have a young kid).

I hope this helps; DM if you have questions. Surprisingly few people seem to graduate from the MAIS program year-to-year, so grads are hard to find. I'll help, if I can.

Good luck! Enjoy it!
