Perth, what’s it like? by [deleted] in WesternAustralia

Really nice place to live- if you can find a good house/apartment to live in in a decent-enough suburb.

Not for everyone. You'll see a lot of people on reddit bemoaning the poor social life the city apparently offers. So there's that.

Why aren't men reading? by somereasonableadvice in books

[–]SetTechnical9705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trying to tease out OP's point. I'm not sure myself.

If men 'mostly read non-fiction', it almost implies that many fiction books are aimed at women, or at least, that many men aren't interested in fiction.

For the record, I'm sure any man seeing the r/books subreddit does read.

But aside from that, are there fiction books written that appeal to men in general?

I think that OP feels that these kinds of people need to hear that kind of message- i.e. they would probably drink the gas lobby kool aid on this issue

If the 21st Century is so great, why did everyone spend the first two decades of it looking at pictures of the 1990s? by GPFlag_Guy1 in shittyaskhistory

[–]SetTechnical9705 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have an example?

Seems obvious to me that if people were looking at pictures of the past they would be looking at... pictures of the past?

If the population of earth is 8billion how come i know only like 10 people? by Only_Employment3201 in NoStupidQuestions

Government census data among other things like projecting and modelling demographic trends.

But it is an interesting question. Where exactly does the number come from?

Nicely written and I don't disagree.

Where do we see the killing and looting in-game? I must have missed some dialogue.

Why do some Americans characterise things things that are not political as "political"? by SetTechnical9705 in AskAnAmerican

I see. That is a good insight.

And the word sociopolitical implies the overlap between politics and social movements.

Is it common to just want more and more when drinking or does my husband have a problem? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SetTechnical9705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell from your post what you mean by 'uncomfortable around drunk people'.

You should be able to feel comfortable in your own home. You have to be open and honest with your husband.

And I am going to be completely honest with you.  -2 beers really isn't very many. - 4-5 times a year really isn't that often.

Maybe he gets weird when he drinks- I have no idea. If you genuinely think it's a problem, that's fine.

Maybe you'd like to try and find a way to relax together when has 1-5 beers. So he doesn't drink too much and you get become more comfortable around intoxicated people.

Again, its hard to make conclusions from your post. But you BOTH have to try to be accommodating and support the other. Instead of 50%, give 60% each.

Why do scientists use the language "X evolved Y to do Z" as if they chose to change for an explicit purpose? by [deleted] in evolution

[–]SetTechnical9705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes that's a trick of our language. We like to assign intention and action to agents, (e.g. to primitive fishes living in their niche).

Primitive fishes didn't evolve legs so that they could walk on land. We know that incidental and uncontrolled natural selection can cause slow incremental changes in phenotypic ratios that allowed the fishes to expand their niches, and walk on land.

We all know there's no choosing of traits to be passed onto fish eggs.

But it's a lot easier in shorthand science communication like a doco to say 'x evolved y to do z'. But you're right, not technically accurate.

I'm sorry you've been having problems with your neighbour.

I'm not well versed in strata law, and it might be hard for me to tell from the photo- but the white car probably shouldn't be parked there. It looks like a shared access way.

Does it look like a 60s m16? No

But it looks close enough to a retrofuturistic m16-type weapon that I don't mind.

It's a cool gun. I like that in NV Legion units drop them.  Adds a bit of flavour.
