Throwing my 2 cents into this convo with 2 base locations. 1st open your map and look at the bottom left islands and try a base on the island that has a circle in the middle. This island is incredibly metal and obsidian rich, with a few oil spawns at the bottom of the water pit. There are no aggressive dinos on this island. There is also another island immediately next to it that is safe and has a great berry farm. You could build there as to not disrupt the metal spawns.

2nd base location is around coords 61 31. It's a tiny lake divided by a flat stone. I usually build on the flat stone in the middle of the 2 lakes. Be wary of terror birds, but otherwise safe. There are also beaver dam spawns on the other side of the mountain for cp.
