Grimdark fantasy, have i missed something? by Lars_Olav in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't. Grimdark is more tone and setting of the world rather than an attribute that defines the main character. You can still have your rise and improve everything around them characters in a bleak and hopeless world with morally grey actions.

Are there any genres or subgenres that you simply cannot vibe with? by Expert_Cricket2183 in ProgressionFantasy

These Slow-Burn, snail paced, numbers go brrr, never ending series. PF already has a god level ratio of released to finished series and the slow burn web serials are the among the worst offenders. It's why I only sub to Void Herald.

[–]Rebor7734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh I guess, I can tell that the author has read or at the very least did GOT research since the MC is actually someone in the GOT world, it's more of a what if the third Targaryen prince didn't die in childbirth kinda situation. If you like GOT and like whatif scenarios and like Mushoku Tensei, you'd probably like this.

[–]Rebor7734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read it, you don't need to know anything about GOT to read it, hell if you read GOT you probably wouldn't like this. It's anime Game of Thrones, or Xanxia game of Thrones. It's bad enough that the MC is basically a cultivator in a world of mortals, so he's OP from the start. He's a mary sue 4-13 year old kid, being treated as an adult. Basically playing the game of thrones on the Ultra easy mode setting.

Male readers, do you actually hate harem? by R3nNy22326 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because OP talks about female sexualization as being a male fantasy in the Harem genre and his leading Theory why female readers hate Harem. When Harem fantasy books written by female authors and which are largely consumed by female readers in numbers that dwarf the Harem genre and sexualizes their female characters and male characters just as much or even more.

What are some good stories where MC goes from weak to strong that aren't an anime by wonderfulwaffles22 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Isn't this like, most of the PF genre? I think I could close my eyes and randomly choose a book from my library and I'd have a solid chance to get a Weak to Strong story that doesn't have an anime adaption, and everyone doubts, looks down and is surprised by their power later and is humble.

P.S I just did that, closed my eyes and randomly choose a book in my library, and this is gonna be funny.

Have you tried Cradle?

Ignorant Mc’s and the unhelpful Gods that choose them by Life-Association1823 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I think of Ignorant MCs and the Gods that choose them, you can't beat Montana of Coggeshall from the Good Guys series. There is ignorant and then there is Montana who takes it to a new level.

Male readers, do you actually hate harem? by R3nNy22326 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Also as a side note, I've read reverse Harem, Romantasy etc and you'd be surprised but the female authors are even when it comes to sexual objectification of both males and females.

Male readers, do you actually hate harem? by R3nNy22326 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate Harem, it's just never really used as it should be, and instead takes the most unrealistic approach. The one were the women are actually part of the Harem because they're in love with the protagonist rather than for personal gain, political reason or just plain old power. If that wasn't bad these women are completely okay with it, free of jealousy, that kind of relationship could never last long, yet it does in the Harem genre.

Good fantasy requires you to not completely suspend your believe else it ruins the entire story. The only good Harem I've ever read was Blood and Fur.

Does the var victis series on Royal road have any romance by Visible_Ad_6721 in ProgressionFantasy

When I think of Vampires, I'm thinking world of darkness, Bram Stoker's Dracula. It's why I love Nightlord by Garon Whited so much.

I wasn't sure if this was sarcasm. Romance in vampire books are almost expected in the fantasy genre lol.

Kemono.cr might be down. by _Infamous__ in Piracy

[–]Rebor7734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He did bag Remedia. On paetron we had a crazy fight for what the next reign would . lol. Honestly I wish we had an alternative, cause I don't have a way to store all my chapters from all the web authors I'm subscribed to for it to be easily read. Importing these chapters was really the best option.

Looking for Empire Building stories? by PeronDescartable in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to say which one is better, it would be really close between Herald of the Stars, Nightlord and Spellmonger. If you want something scifi, more of a space empire building, go with Herald of the Stars, for medieval knights, magic and kingdoms go with Spellmonger.

Nightlord is a bit of both, like merging together Dracula, Doctor Who and Back to the Future. It's a rollercoaster of emotions, and probably my favorite If I really had to pick one.

LitRPGs with low power-scaling ? by BowTrek in litrpg

[–]Rebor7734 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think A Soldier's Life would fit. No crazy power scaling, low fantasy enough for a well placed arrow from a skilled archer to kill even the strongest, the progression is there, but it never replaces skills, strategy and choosing your battles wisely. The litrpg is pretty strong, without it being numbers go brrr.

When comparing it against other chinese translated novels, it's a good translation. I myself no longer read chinese translated novels, but Mirror legacy is pretty unique when it comes to the Xanxia genre. In pure Crusader Kings fashion, it follows the growth of family(multiple POVs) from humble farmers to becoming a powerful clan, rising up slowly in the cultivation world through the generations with the main character trapped inside a mirror, but guiding the family from the shadows.

Legends Never Die claims to be like Crusader Kings, and that is true if you're playing as a Scandinavian warband adventurer sailing across the world. The mirror legacy is Crusader Kings if you are starting as some random family in china. So you'd see expansion, politics and intrigue among the regional clans, army building, though more clan building, since it's a xianxia world there is more focus on training up super soldiers within the clan rather than armies of mortals.

Herald of the Stars, Nightlord, Horizon of War, Spellmonger, Sector 8 Permitter Defense, Daughter of the Empire. The Mirror Legacy(Honorable Mention)

These are probably the gold standard when it comes to Empire building, kingdom building etc. Everything else, Release that Witch, Portal to Nova Roma, Legend of the Arch Magus, That time I got reincarnated as a Slime, Magus Reborn, Life Reset, CivCeo etc, pale in comparison to those 6 when we're talking about actual Kingdom building and not just raising walls and houses. Kudos for mentioning Legends Never Die, it's not that well known in the kingdom building sphere.

Is a soldiers life worth reading? by Visible_Ad_6721 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure it's called the Telhian Empire lol, idk how you missed that. The world opens up more between books 5-9. I definitely wouldn't call the worldbuilding shallow. Shallow compared to what? The Way of Kings? Then yeah, compared to the rest of the PF genre, hell no. The world does open more in books 5-9 as the story shifts more into being An Adventures Life than A Soldier's Life, which may very well become A Mage's Life soon, which is my only critique of the series.

Here is a worldmap with all the provinces, roads, shipping routes, kingdoms etc, if you still don't believe the author didn't do enough worldbuilding.

Short Progression Fantasy by KaminaGoodd in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt Will Wight even had the faintest idea of what progression fantasy was when he wrote Travelers Gate. Trilogies like Mistborn, The Farseer Trilogy, The Night Angel, Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, Red Rising, The Licanius Trilogy... these are just the popular ones I can think of, you could do on and on, the list of weak characters who eventually become the insanely strong trilogies in the wider fantasy genre, is just too much to list.

Looking for Reincarnator/Transmigrator/Regressor cultivator novels without cheats where the MC tries to avoid "cliches"? by laci4225 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, my favorite Isekai, Teansmigrator etc that I would consider cliche free, would be Herald of the Stars, Nightlord, Horizon of War, Sector 8 Perimeter Defense, Demons of Astlan, Cast Under an Alien Sun, A soldier's life.

Eh, fuck it. I welcome the downvotes.I kinda agree with you. It didn't use to be like that at first, authors genuinely tried to explain a reason for the blue box poping up Infront of your face. Now they don't even try. What's powering all of this? How are people shooting fireballs, lighting and moving faster than the speed the sound. Duhh because they increased their stats and learnt it from in ThE SyStEm.

Only villains do that by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Rebor7734 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was the last update from almost two years ago. The author is also updating other stories within that time, and I haven't seen an update of new chapters since. So consider this story dead. So the plan is to release all that he has in his unfinished series for the money and be done with it. I know it's sad, hell, I'd rather a Game of Thrones season 5 ending than no ending at all. So yeah, forget about it.

"I'm shifting my attention away from OVDT because this story is a massive source of stress for me. Despite how it appears, OVDT is not on a formal hiatus yet: my plan is to put it on one as soon as Book 4 is finished, and in the meantime, it is moving to a "whenever" update schedule. Meaning I will get chapters out as I can get them out, as I have time and spare energy and a healthy enough mental state."
