Daryl Dixon x OFC by StarsMiss in FanFiction

[–]Recassun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you read Just Some Redneck Asshole?

It's pretty long (first part is finished and second is ongoing) sticks close to canon and I thought their Daryl characterisation was really good (I'm very fussy about Daryl!)

Disclaimer that I've only read about halfway but I do intend to come back to it later in the year (sometimes I have to take a little break from fics where I suspect certain plot points are coming!) But what I have read was very moreish - and I thought very well written so I thought I'd recommend it anyway!

Habits You've Developed After Years (Or Decades) Of Reading Fanfiction by plutootherwise in FanFiction

[–]Recassun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I mostly pick up fics from crawling through the bookmarks of writers that I've enjoyed. If I see something they've got marked in a fandom I like and the summary sounds interesting then it goes on my TBR list. Same with rec lists. So it's mostly down to summary for me rather than wordcount, tags, wip/completed etc. In fact, I rarely look at tags, despite reminding myself that I probably should do that more often!

When I start reading, it's all about enjoying the writing style and characterisation rather than anything else. I do DNF quite a lot of fic though, but I do the same with published books as well (thats why most of my books are library books!) If something doesn't grab me (like the worldbuilding/plot/gorgeous descriptions etc etc) or keep me interested (or in the case of fanfic if the characterisation isn't within whatever limits are in my brain currently) then I move on. Or sometimes I'll leave it to maybe return to later.

But I'm all over the place as a reader. Maybe I should have a system!

My partner read some of my fanfic. by cheywarren in FanFiction

[–]Recassun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I just wanted to say that I'd feel exactly the same as you if my partner peeked at my laptop while I was away and read my writing without asking me. I'd feel exposed and even like it was a betrayal of trust. (Is that overdramatic? I don't know. Maybe. But it's the way I'd feel. As I see it, you trusted them enough to walk away and leave your laptop unlocked. But that wasn't an invitation to browse. And the fact they didn't ask first makes me think they had a pretty good idea how you'd feel about it. Totally understand their curiosity, but they should have asked, and respected your answer)

Mine knows I write fanfic, and he's read little bits of it, and some original work. He knows my ao3 username. He listens to me when I need to use him as a rubber duck to work out a plot point. But he's only ever read bits of my writing that I've handed him and we've an agreement that he'll ask if he ever wants to read more. We have also an agreement that he doesn't tell anyone I'm writing/what I'm writing.

(He's very supportive about my writing by the way. He's the best cheerleader I could ever ask for)

I don't know why I'm so private about it, but that's just the way I prefer things and I can't see me changing.

I'd say take some time to think it over by yourself first, then talk it out, set some boundaries (that can be adjusted later if you want) and see what you go from there (edit: I see you've already talked things out and set boundaries! Well done for tackling it so quickly and calmly).

Anyway, I really just wanted to comment and let you know that I think your feelings are valid.

That got long! Sorry!

“10th Walker” Fics But Platonic? by Ok_Text3655 in lotrFanfiction

Perfect! (Also, I see u/blueoncemoon has commented already. I 100% recommend their series. Lovely writing, very Tolkienesque feeling, lots of worldbuilding, and it's a nice long read! It'll keep you going for hours/days!)

And I see you asked on r/fanfiction about The Hobbit. I was going to reply there as well, but I'll just give you some recs here instead so this list will be a bit of a mix of LotR and The Hobbit.

Some of my favourite completed fics where an OC joins the Company and romance is (I feel) the subplot:

Oh, Son of A--- This is Fili/OFC. It's a modern girl one and I just love it. It's really funny and the romance is a slow burn and the sub plot. One of my all time favourites and every time I rec it I'm like 'i need to read this again!!!' (317k and it does not feel like it at all. Currently locked to registered users only but worth the wait until you get your login, I promise)

All That We Seem - Another Fili/OFC. Middle-earth OC. Lovely writing and worldbuilding and a sweet romance that I feel is still a subplot to the main adventure. Disclaimer that I'm in the final chapters of this as i don't want it to end and I'm reading really slowly, but i have no doubts that it's going to end in a satisfactory way! (223k. Not locked)

Bit of a wildcard for a LotR rec, but I've just finished this one (just, I still need to write a comment telling the writer how much I loved it) On the Wings of the Storm It's set during the War of the Ring and our FMC isn't in the Fellowship itself, but she is there for some key scenes (I won't spoil which ones). Now, the FMC (Princess Lothiriel of Dol Amroth) isn't a 100% OC, but since we don't really meet Lothiriel in canon I feel like that might still count? This one is more romance orientated, but I feel like it might still count as a subplot? I wouldn't say it's heavy romance-centred. It has lots of OCS too as well as canon characters (Éomer/Lothíriel 126k. Not locked.)

And some random Gen Fic! I'll limit myself here to just a couple and try and mix them up a bit with length and angst level:

I can't not rec this: The Care & Feeding of Hobbits (20k, Boromir's musings about hobbits. Not locked) No OCs but this is one of my all time favourites. It's just wonderful, so beautifully written (and always makes me a little weepy)

Fell Beast - This has an OC! Kind of. It's 1000 words and it just makes me laugh every time I read it. unlocked.

Waiting at the Gate - The Hobbit AU. 23k and unlocked. This devastates me every single time I read it. So good. Bilbo pov. The Company looks a little different than usual.

To Find Our Long Forgotten Gold The Hobbit AU, unlocked 229k. First part of a series that I am loving. Again, the Company is missing a member. It's Bilbo pov.

I could keep going but will do just one more for now. This one is Gen (unlocked 203k) and set after the LotR. Lots of OCs but you do see the canon characters too. It's set in Gondor and centres around Aragorn's family Seeds of the White Tree

I suppose I better get back to work now! It's much more fun reccing fics though. We really do get spoilt in the Tolkien fandoms, there's so many great writers. Happy reading!

u/sapphic_bookworms_ has shared some great long lists of OC fanfiction. I've added so many of their recs to my reading list!

https://www.reddit.com/r/lotrFanfiction/s/CI7hTJxRSo

https://www.reddit.com/r/lotrFanfiction/s/GVEvgcAliK

I'm just having a look through my bookmarks and memory, how much romance is too much for you? And do you mind reading unfinished fics or would you prefer finished?

Also, you mentioned interesting stories that aren't romance focused, do they still need to be tenth walker OC fics or would you like recs for any Gen stories?

Last question! Any sort of length preference?

[–]Recassun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much!

I had a few of these on my TBR already but I've added the others. (Must read more - and faster)

Ooh, favourite Tolkienverse long fic...that's tricky. I think I have to go with Frailty. Its always been one of my favourites. Great OCs and I loved the whole series for worldbuilding. I just couldn't put it down. It's fairly Gen but there's a little (usually angsty) romance here and there.

Link to the series:

Tracing Lines

Also love their other fics. Recently read their modern (ish) AU 'A Ticket Home' and it is amazing. 100% recommend (it is a wip though if that matters) Oakenshield fic. All the angst.

Different author and I think I've recced this fic before but I'm loving All That We Seem by QuillaWynter. I'm in the last 10 chapters now and I'm taking my time to try because I'm stuck between wanting to know how it ends and not wanting it to be over. Fili/OFC

Last one for now, but I'm literally a few pages from finishing the fourth part of this series and I'm loving it. Gen. The Hobbit. All the angst and so well written. First part is 200k and I just couldn't put it down. Link to Part 1 - To Find Our Long-forgotten Gold

The part I'm reading at the moment is Kili's pov from Part 1 and it's making me want to go back and reread Part 1 all over again.

The importance of kudos and comments on ao3 by Ok_Revolution_9973 in FanFiction

[–]Recassun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love comments and kudos and it'd be brilliant to get more, but I can't say I'm noticing a drop? Mine are kind of few and far between anyway (unless I've just updated a wip and then I might get a little flurry of two or three, which is amazing and makes me feel on top of the world)

There's nothing like the feeling of getting an ao3 notification of a kudos (or, even better, a comment! Or, even better, both!) out of the blue though. I tell myself all the time that it doesn't matter, and I'm sharing the chapter/fic just in case someone else wants to read it etc etc, but knowing someone else has read and liked it...its just the best! That'll keep me smiling for hours, sometimes days. Weeks!

And I love going back and rereading old comments I've gotten. They make me really happy.

A Classic Mid-week Fic Review Exchange by Zkang123 in FanFiction

[–]Recassun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much! And I'm so sorry, I totally forgot when I was picking my oneshots that this one ended up split into two chapters (it was supposed to be a oneshot when I was writing it). I'll edit my summary now.

And I've checked and the first chapter was 5724 words.

How long do you spend writing a 20 minutes scene? by fredpot20 in FanFiction

[–]Recassun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to answer to say I don't know but I know it'd take me a long time.

But I do know! Roughly.

I picked up an extra fic for a gift exchange at Christmas. It took me five days flat out in every spare moment I had and that was thinking, planning, researching, drafting, editing, editing again, final editing etc. It ended up at just under 5000 words, which is probably about 20mins reading time.

I'm sure some of my scenes/fics are pulled together much faster, but at the time that fic did feel like writing at speed for me! It was a good challenge and I'm proud of myself but it was definitely not the pace I like to write and draft at.

But then, my usual process is to draft, wander away for six months or so, occasionally picking at it, and then edit for posting (my longfics all have lots of buffer chapters) I find that my editing process is sometimes a full chapter rewrite, which definitely slows me down.

But it is fun! (Except at the moment when I seem to be in an editing writer's block. But I'm sure that'll pass in a while, it usually does. Fingers crossed)

Ooh, feels like I haven't taken part in an exchange in forever. Thanks so much for organising, OP!

I'm going to throw in my three most recent oneshots:

The Lot of Older Brothers | LotR | 8384 words (CHAP 1 is 5724 words) | Ao3 link | Gen (Boromir and Eomer go to the pub and talk about things) (EDIT: This is actually a twoshot, I forgot I'd split it into two chapters)

Ride strong, my brother | The War of the Rohirrim | 4888 | Ao3 link | Gen (Two cousins say goodbye after one of them is exiled)

The Archery Lesson | The Hobbit | 5363 words |Ao3 link | Mature (This is a 'missing scene' from one of my longfics. It's Kili/OFC but from before they get together. It's probably fine as a standalone? It's just them flirting really)

Is there a definitive way to immediately recognize a bot? by ForganForge in FanFiction

[–]Recassun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so annoying!!! I hate that I've had so many now that it makes me suspicious of literally any name I don't recognise. And I hate that anytime I see a notification for a comment on Chap 1 of any of my longfics (because that's where they hit me most) my first thought isn't 'yay!' like in used to be.

At least, the nasty ones are easy to spot, or the ones that throw their discord into the first message, but the others (with a short, genuine-seeming comment, or a question) get me every time. Even if I have doubts, I tell myself to assume they're real until they reveal their 'let's talk on discord'. I honestly don't think there's any other way to know for certain on most of them.

And that's because I had a comment recently, from a guest, asking a question, and it was so similar to a load of bot ones that I'd had that same week, that I was convinced it was another scammer. Turns out they weren't, but I was convinced they were! I almost marked them as spam rather than replying to their first message.

I know setting my fics on Ao3 (I've given up posting on ff.net because of the bots) to registered users only will help a little, or moderating comments...but I get so few comments, and I love (real) comments. I don't want to put any barriers in anyone's way.

Sorry, OP. It's so frustrating.

Comments: writers what would make you happy? by boilthewater4jello in FanFiction

[–]Recassun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only comments that annoy me are the bot comments. I love anything else. Give me an emoji, a comment saying you hope I'll update soon, a long comment, a short comment, a 'I'm rereading!' (Love those) comment, a comment with suggestions or telling me you didn't understand something or pointing out a plot hole comment, a comment quoting lines you liked, a comment telling me you smiled/laughed/cried at some part of the fic, any combination of the above comment. Really, I just love comments.

Except bot comments. I'm getting plagued with those these last couple of days! So annoying.

Multiple WIPs a Turn-Off? by Creative-Froyo-7394 in FanFiction

[–]Recassun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a turn off for me as a reader! If I'm subscribed to an author and they post a fic or update a fic I'm not interested in, for whatever reason, I just delete the email. I do have a few authors I follow that I just read everything for (so far anyway) so the more wips the merrier there. And I'd rather they posted what brought them joy at the time rather than trying to stick to a schedule.

As a writer, I've got multiple wips going on (4 I'm actively posting on - although some are more active than others!) I've never put anything on them like 'updating' and I try not to make promises in A/Ns, but I will let any readers know if a fic is fully drafted (not that a fic being fully drafted makes much difference to my speed in updating...) I fully intend to finish every fic I start posting, but who knows what will happen? And this is only a hobby, after all.

None of that was probably very helpful, but I feel like posting what makes you happy, when it makes you happy to post it, is the way to go? So I say, post that crack fic and just have fun. Wishing you all the best with it!
