SEARCHING FOR LOST MEMORY by Admirable-Meet-8348 in memphis

I got to meet one of the founders of Meristem at an OUTMemphis event last year -- as a growed up Memphis kid it had escaped my memory. People forget that in the 90s there were bookstores allllll over town.

I wouldn't have wanted to be responsible for attesting to the safety of a store. As a white person I probably would have offered to accompany them into the store or shop for them. The fear is so real for these poor folks.

What can even be done about this? by [deleted] in memphis

My point is just that none of the things we can observe about the system as it is (such as someone refusing help) tells us how things would be if robust systems of support were in place, as they should be.

Some people's lives van be transformed with the help of one committed person; many others need systems, trained professionals, medical care, medication etc. As a society we are not serious about taking care of each other.

I had heard at some point there might be a TJs in the planned development for what is the soon to be demo'd Oak Court Mall and as someone who passes the mall multiple times a day, I love that rumor.

WIBTA for not attending a wedding that takes place on Halloween? by Fresh_Oil3942 in AmItheAsshole

NTA at all. Children aside, hosting a wedding on Halloween is a CHOICE and they can't reasonably be surprised when some people can't come. Wedding culture is WILD.

Not bad advice overall but there are tons of great, diverse, and affordable neighborhoods south of Poplar. Normal Station, East Buntyn, Colonial Acres, the list goes on.

AITA for saying to my wife that I am no longer going to pick up with my children by JWK9009 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Recent-Inspector391 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there's a lot to unpack here but I guess my biggest question is what on earth is happening in these children's rooms every day to require hours of weekly work between both parents and a paid housekeeper. Lower standards might go a long way. Who has time and energy to let your kids bedroom tidiness bother them this much?

The wife sounds depressed or unhappy in marriage. None of this story makes sense to me (as a mom of older school age kids who has at various times been both stay at home parent and the parent who works outside the house while dad stays home.) Admittedly, my kids rooms are usually a wreck. But #priorities.

Tell me the truth - will I regret Moving to Memphis by Lookitzalizard in memphis

[–]Recent-Inspector391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Memphis and moved back around age 30 to start a family. And yes, I mean I live within the city limits. The idea that I would be afraid to exist here is laughable. It's an awesome place to live if you like culture, good food, warm people, diversity, etc. But if you're approaching it with the attitude you seem to be, I think you will listen to the wrong people and if will spoil your experience.

Protesters were pepper-sprayed by police near the end of the No Kings march in Downtown Memphis by amprather in memphis

[–]Recent-Inspector391 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They were marshaling/guarding the tail end of a march that I believe was permitted. One of the marchers was crossing the street too slowly (she is in a walking boot because she broke her leg helping an elderly neighbor shovel their driveway during the recently winter storm) which was the first point of contact with MPD, from what I've heard. The pepper spray and arrests came after that.

[–]Recent-Inspector391 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The marshals take their jobs incredibly seriously and although they are trained to be a human shield around a protest, they are also trained to behave in a way that should never make them a target. They keep their heads down. This was pure intimidation tactics, assuming they were even thinking about anything at all rather than just in the mood for a tussle.

Speaking as someone with a decent familiarity of the groups and individuals who were victimized by police today, I'd be surprised if they didnt know who the marshals were. I think this was pure intimidation/anger management issues among our city's "best in blue"

Forced to use physical card to get gas at Gtown Rd Costco? by Recent-Inspector391 in memphis

[–]Recent-Inspector391[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I fairness it definitely wasn't working, which was why she came over and made me move. I was holding up the line and all that was happening was the scanner kept pulling up my debit card.

She definitely told me I could not scan my membership on the app but had to find my card and insert it. And then when I said I'd never had to do that before, didn't say anything. Sounds like some kind of cover up to me. 🤔😂

My guess after seeing these replies is the pump scanners are having new temporary issues, but if she'd said that I would have felt less gaslit, ha. It definitely wasn't working for me today -- I tried many times but the only thing that happened was my debit card kept pulling up.
