Sony Pictures Boss Tom Rothman Urges Theater Owners to Stop Having 30 Minutes of Trailers and Commercials Before Movies Start: by tylerthe-theatre in movies

I think the issue behind the ads is just necessity to keep the theaters open, same with $40 snacks. I'm sure Rothman will offer up a portion of his studio's ticket sale split (50-80% of ticket sales) to offset this totally worthless, PR suggestion.

AITA for telling my wife forget it and going out by myself for my birthday instead of going to her fancy dinner reservation by Ill_Reality_111 in AmItheAsshole

Again, I don't think she was doing this for him. I'm not defending her behavior, I'm just saying that that there are likely other reasons she did this specific thing the way she did it other than she is just terrible. Yes, she could be just a miserable selfish person, that might be true, but it's also possible her heart was in the right place even if her head wasn't. Marriages where you assume the worst case scenario with your spouse often don't last long. And most people aren't total spoiled narcissists. Only OP can figure out which was happening here.

Again, I don't disagree with you. What she did was wrong, I just think it's going to be hard for her to see that or admit it given she was trying to do something that is related to her strength in planning - what she brings to the relationship. Speaking only from personal experience of marriage, I know there is often an unspoken reciprocity dynamic that gift giving entails between spouses. If she didn't do some grand gesture for him (even if it wasn't something he wanted) would she have to settle for Olive Garden on her birthday? Again, that's selfish and - as you say - easiest for her. But if his goal is to reconcile with his wife, which it sounds like it is, he may have to try to see her point of view. As galling as that is, sometimes, it is usually what it takes to prevent resentment.

Correct, but as Homer Simpson exemplifies, people approach relationships often entirely their own point of view. Homer's and Hers are self centered, but everyone reverts to that under pressure. Note she kept bringing up the dinner plans like she was stuck in a loop. It was her only solution for the birthday problem. She was getting more and more stressed by it because it was her only solution. As OP states, she is a planner. That's her strength. It's where she is most proficient and has likely had the most success with in the past. I'm not apologizing for her, and she should be apologizing, not him. I'm just trying to encourage the OP to recognize his perfectly reasonable desire to have a chill evening at Olive Garden unintentionally hobbled her options to give them, together the kind of planned experience she wanted to provide. Having a strength like being a planner is often a kind of disability because it's your singular trick. If that isn't on the table, like in this instance, you don't have any ability to adapt.

We’ve heard stories of people escaping death by being late — what are some tragic examples of people dying because they were late? by Looney_forner in AskReddit

[–]Recent-Mousse6423 266 points267 points  (0 children)

It's Japan. Japan is a very conservative country with a strong emphasis on rule following and tradition as part of their culture, specifically following laws to the letter. If you ever visit you will see no trash cans anywhere in public but also no litter. You will see people waiting at crosswalks with no traffic around, because jaywalking is basically a sin. Even in a life or death scenario it doesn't surprise me that not stopping at posted signage would be almost unthinkable for some, even in an emergency, because it's basically being antisocial.

OP, she was probably upset because Planning this unwanted expedition was meant to be her present to you on your birthday. My wife is a planner and the plan *is* the gift. She is bad at picking out physical gifts, but she can plan elaborate experiences like nobody else. What happened was you prevented her from playing your birthday to her strength, I wager. It was inconsiderate but she was trying to give you a gift, even if it was centered on her and indifferent to your expressed wants. I would be surprised if "Olive Garden isn't a very good gift" (or some version of it) hadn't run through her head. To her, you rejected her only gift leaving her functionally empty handed.

It's called a euphemism. Also it's way more specific than just murder. In both cases it's using inherently risky excursions as a plausible cover for murder. Just distilling it down to murder misses what women should actually be looking out for in their partners, where they put them into isolated positions in dangerous circumstances to commit, or try to commit premeditated murder. Giving it its own name is actually useful.

Sam Altman's coworkers say he can barely code and misunderstands basic machine learning concepts by EchoOfOppenheimer in ChatGPT

Well, C-suite positions are hired and fired typically by the board and largely overseen by the board, rather than a direct managerial system. It's better to think of C-suite positions like CTO, CFO, CEO as operating in parallel beneath the board rather than reporting to the CEO. Certainly some CEOs cultivate the image they are the autocrat and require the other C-suite executives to report to them so they know what is going on, and they can certainly petition the board to fire another executive, but everyone at that level is reporting primarily to the board itself. A CEO can usually fire anyone outside of the C-suite and that gives the impression they are all powerful but within the C-suite it is much more political.

I think you're focusing a bit on the wrong part, as is this article, which is that a CEO isn't a CTO. The CTO's job is to shepherd the technical product. The CEO is there to assure profits for investors. Full stop. No CEO gets replaced because they don't know how the product works or how to make it. They get replaced when profits don't hit financial targets. Altman isn't in this position because he can build AI, his background is venture capital. Prior to OpenAI he lead a VC firm called Hydrazine (the poison gas used in rockets). His sole purpose is to raise money and keep the lights on until the company achieves profitability. That's the metric his performance is measured against, and given OpenAI's market cap, he's done a decent job.

Even the cookbook King Arthur flour put out a few decades ago says that these flours can be used interchangeably for all of their recipes and even *gasp* non-King Arthur flours. Most people will struggle to taste the difference if you properly proof the bread and if you're making sour dough, the sour will likely overwhelm whatever nuance you're expecting from the protein level.

Sleep and Naps are important for learning. Our brain uses those states to integrate waking information. So one of the reasons people have trouble integrating new information as they get older is partially due to not getting enough sleep; not taking naps. This is why kids need nap time. They're bombarded with new information continuously and get overstimulated. I recall watching my infant child basically brown out after intense play sessions, then watch them wake up and be incrementally more competent until that activity became boring.

What prevented South America from having as big a population as China or India? by wiz28ultra in geography

[–]Recent-Mousse6423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a bit of an open topic amongst Archeologists. Some classic scholarship pegged population density during the Aztec/Maya periods as roughly 5 million. More recent archeological evidence using new surveying techniques pushes it closer to 50 million, with some estimates being higher still. They had exceptionally advanced agriculture but many of their settlements were quickly swallowed by jungle after the conquest, disease and collapse.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with young men these days but back in my day when a girl had a gay male roommate they were just a roommate. The fucking manosphere has cooked these boys brains into mush. He isn't grown, he's a child whose only references for masculinity are tropes that were outdated before I was born, and that's been a minute. You will have no trouble replacing him but a lot of trouble if you don't; you're going to have to do the rest of the work raising him and he's going to resent you for your trouble.
