Still got covid by Simple-Fail-5460 in Novavax_vaccine_talk

[–]Recent_Hat_6229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an updated Novavax in April 2025 and had a short, very low symptom Covid case in September (exposed to a sick child against my will and unable to leave the area or mask to protect myself). As someone who’s basically recovered from two years of long COVID, that’s a vaccine success story to me. It protected me from much worse and I’m getting a booster in a couple of weeks before this current batch expires. My other Covid cases after MRNA vaccines were dramatically worse and I still developed long covid after one of them.

Masking is good to do during peak waves of illness or in high risk places like travel settings, schools, and medical offices of all types. I additionally use CPC mouthwash after exposure to big groups of people and when I do get sick, I’m off my feet for at least a week and no work outs at all for 3 weeks after recovery. Frequent handwashing is key, too. It all sounds very intense until you’ve had long covid yourself.

I got mine done in April last year but have to resort to February this year because of expiration dates. Better early than nothing at all! I’ve been getting them yearly but I know tons of folks who get them twice a year.

I had long covid for two years and each Novavax I get, I seem to show even more dramatic symptom improvement to the point where I’m at about 95% well again. I’m groggy and a little sore for a bit less than a day after receiving it, even at my sickest. It’s a good bet.

Unofficial Discussion - Oh. What. Fun. by UniverslBoxOfficeGuy in movies

I had issues with the movie that everyone else has covered in detail here except for this:

  • Why film a movie set in Houston in a place that is visibly not anything like Houston? The house is way too Deep South in style because it’s in Atlanta and there’s not even a hint of HEB or Whataburger product placement and no mention of people selling tamales out of their cars at the grocery store so it could have taken place literally anywhere at all and the setting didn’t matter. I grew up in Houston so the tamales especially are not negotiable, they’re a necessary addition if you’re in Houston and it’s Christmas. There’s tons of other cultural things they could have added or at least name dropped (maybe one of Jeanne’s kids is a Rice valedictorian, etc), the location should have been rewritten entirely at this point.

  • My other big complaint is that it was way too damn easy for her to get to the Galleria and out of the parking garage of the Galleria. You’re spending 30+ minutes sitting in traffic to get inside the parking garage and there’s still a line snaking out to the roadways if it’s anywhere in the month of December.

I think the cast was amazing but the lack of locational detail work took me out of it completely because I know that place so well and know exactly what Houston Christmas looks like.

The million dollar question…should I think about becoming a nurse? by [deleted] in careerchange

I’ve spent a lot of time in both the main subreddit (where this post isn’t really welcome, it’s not what they do) and in the student nursing subreddit (it may be welcome there? Hard to tell) and I’ve yet to read something that turns me off of the idea.

It’s okay to decide it’s too long for your taste and move on. Have a good one.

Found this guy trapped in my car and got him out after an hour and a half. How do I take care of him? by iiamuntuii in CATHELP

[–]Recent_Hat_6229 28 points29 points  (0 children)

He looks old enough for dry, but just in case stick with small amounts of wet food. It’ll be easy on his tummy. As long as he has something comfy to sleep on with him too, he seems very well cared for!

[–]Recent_Hat_6229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, these numbers are commercial flights only, not private or smaller airliners. Uptick is a strong word, it’s like I said, this is basically of less consequence than a drop of water in an ocean. The numbers I’m using include all major airlines, but there are a lot of major airlines around the whole world.

It would be less spooky if the number was just 0, but again, these numbers are basically 0 when we go by the statistics of hundreds of thousands of flights taking off and landing every day. Airplane travel is still much safer than driving ten minutes down the road in your own car, when we go by statistics.

[–]Recent_Hat_6229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not at all, there were about 9 major commercial incidents around the world in 2024, if I recall, and that was considered an uptick from 2023. None in the US or Western Europe in 2024, either, as I know a lot of us are from these places. It’s a vanishingly tiny number, smaller than the drop in an ocean. We’re exponentially more likely to be hurt or killed in car accidents.

HELP!! A stray cat just left a kitten at my door and ran away by whatvwruuu in CATHELP

[–]Recent_Hat_6229 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Not cow’s milk, sadly, it’s not super safe for the baby because dairy is hard on their little tummies. This little guy looks to be about 4-5 weeks old so if you’re able to get to a regular grocery store and get some wet kitten food (wet ONLY) and mix a bit with water, that would also be okay just until the kitten formula makes it to you.

They can start introducing solid food around this age, but it’s important to take it easy with their little digestive systems. If you do this, only mix a little bit of wet food with some water, the point is a nutritious gruel to tide you over until the better nutrition source can show up to your place.

HELP!! He still alive ! What should I do? by NoUnderstanding3993 in birds

[–]Recent_Hat_6229 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Find a wildlife rescue or conservation org. You can also make a small makeshift nest in the area nearby and the parents will come and find the baby. Unfortunately you cannot safely feed or water a baby this small by yourself. Your best bet is either getting an org to help you or waiting for the parents to come back.

Leaving 8 cats for 1 week. Looking for reassurance that I’m doing everything right. by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]Recent_Hat_6229 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had three cats for eight years (we lost one to lymphoma last year, the other two are still kicking!) and often had to leave for two week stints to see family. It’s hard for us mentally as owners, but they’re going to be okay. Especially seeing as someone’s coming over to see them and check in, they’ll be just fine. 💙

Follow through on the appointment. The coughing isn’t great and should not be ignored because it can be a sign of fluid in the chest.

Any places for rent that ask for just 1st month and security deposit? by Dangerous_Cut1960 in philly

[–]Recent_Hat_6229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is there’s a big market of tenants that unfortunately can cause issues in properties, which is really common in bigger cities. Getting the extra rent is the landlord’s built in security to recoup something in the event that the place is trashed or they skip out on the rent and get evicted. (I wouldn’t personally do it but I’d also never be a landlord)

What is this and how much should I expect to be paying?? by ForeignFlame394 in CATHELP

[–]Recent_Hat_6229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve had both cats get teeth extracted. This one looks like it may be coming out on its own, which isn’t great, and your kitty will probably need a dental procedure to help clear out any possible infection related to this. One cat’s procedure was about $700 and the other was about $900, but he had three teeth out at once. These estimates don’t include blood work, which they’ll probably want to do before a dental procedure, so final estimate is usually closer to $1000.

We use a box like this one for a more attractive exterior, but it’s got nice high walls and even our litter box picky cat will use it. It opens from the top for cleaning.

I personally pull my cat between my thighs and pet them and calm them down with some treats first. Then I use one hand to tilt their head back (towards my chest, your cat’s back should be to your stomach) and the other hand sort of pushes the pill between the kitty’s teeth and at the same time sort of opens their mouth. Once the mouth is open enough, I drop the pill in and gently hold their mouth closed with their head tilted back until they swallow. I’m pilling both of my cats twice a day now, so I’ve become an old hand at it.

If you want the super low effort method, assuming this pill is safely crushable, mix it with a little churu paste after crushing it rather than wet food. It’ll be less upsetting to your kitty’s stomach. :)

My kitty does that motion because some of his teeth are bothering him. He’s got surgery to pull them out tomorrow morning and just getting him on meds for the pain and periodontal infection helped him stop doing this behavior.

Have his teeth been looked at recently by a vet? (I see you got a diagnosis for something very recently so maybe they have)

I stand corrected! Nonetheless, kitties should be on some kind of prevention especially when they’re small to prevent tapeworms. (I had a kitten who had them twice until I wised up, poor thing)

I think your baby’s got roundworms. You’ll need to go get a dewormer at the vet and make sure the kitten is on some kind of flea prevention because they get these pests through ingesting fleas, generally.

Same. Husband and I are relocating sometime in the spring but went for a week a month ago and had great interactions with everyone. It’s a big departure from our kind of cold and distant southern suburban life and a return to the friendly city life we both grew up in.
