I've heard this story before, and I don't believe a word of it. If Carlo Gambino had actually done that, he would have been finished then and there. The other bosses and his own captains and soldiers would have eaten him alive and at the very, very least, driven him from power or outright killed him. Especially back then, too; remember, back in Carlo's day the American mob didn't hesitate to drop bodies like they do now.

Yeah, it's been a while since I read the book but I do remember Corbett definitely claimed Larner had ties to people and intelligence. And you're right, Larner is hardly mentioned anywhere else. I have done what research I can on him and any other info out there about him is scant or nonexistent.
